Scared to hand my notice in today..

I was offered a job yesterday, in the same industry as I'm working in currently but in a much, much bigger organisation with better progression opportunities, step up in my job-role and much better salary.

I am currently in a small business and feel really sad about the thought of leaving. My currently company have given me a great introduction into the sector, and took a chance on me when they had plenty of other applicants for my job role who had been to Uni to gain their qualifications (I had not..) they've been good to me on the whole, and I like who I work with. I know the job role and what's expected of me. I suppose you could say I'm comfortable here and that's probably why I'm terrified of making the move..

I was only job hunting in the first place because my current company have been struggling as of recently, and have been making large cuts. We aren't sure if the company will be here in 5/6 months time but of course are trying our best and remaining optimistic.

With the way things are going, the extra money would be a HUGE help for me. I'm struggling on what I'm being paid currently and don't have two pennies to rub together by the end of the month. I've been living on about £10 for over a week and a half now Blush

I'm so scared about taking a leap into the unknown 🫣

Has anybody felt the same, and ended up having a positive move to a new job? The new company are lovely and have been great and professional, but I feel terrified!

Congratulations! I had much the same question which I posted on here last year.

overwhelmingly the advice was to take the job. I felt sick hanging in my notice, but did so. 7 months in and I am loving my new role and loving that I now have money to ‘do stuff’ with.

PawPrintsInMyPansies · 18/01/2023 09:47

Handing, not hanging!

Shoxfordian · 18/01/2023 09:47

It sounds like a great opportunity so take some deep breaths and realise they chose you for a reason- congratulations!

2chocolateoranges · 18/01/2023 09:50

Sounds like an amazing opportunity. Go for it.

Last year I handed my notice in at a company I had been at for 18 months, they offered everything to tempt me to stay eg department move, move other employees departments and a decent pay rise but enough was enough, I just needed a fresh new start.

so here I am 6months down the line in a job I’m loving, with better terms and conditions, better pension and pay , more opportunity for job progression and I’m happy which is most important.

Newyearnewjobnewlife · 18/01/2023 09:51

I’ll be handing my notice in at the end of the week, the new job is my dream job and I’m absolutely terrified I’m not good enough or qualified enough, that generally I’ll fuck it up, it feels overwhelming.

That said, I got the job, they believe I’m the right person, my fear is my own and I have to get over it, I’m scared because this is a big deal to me, it matters, we just need to pull on our big girl pants and go to our new jobs and be amazing!

RagingWoke · 18/01/2023 09:56

Sounds like a great opportunity! It's always a bit scary leaving for the unknown, but it's whats best for you.

Just do it, get it over with early rather than stressing over it and the look forward to your new job!

I did it 2 years ago, left what had been a very comfortable job but with little progression and lower than average pay (and a line manager who turned on me for getting pregnant!). I've never looked back, my job pays more, has great progression with management that are actively mentoring me to achieve it and I'm really happy. While the old place has lost all but 1 of the original team of 5 and hasn't kept any new recruits for longer than 6 months which is really telling.

That's an entirely rational response to the unknown. You like your current company, you like working there - that's the known. The new company is the unknown - but you're being given the chance to stretch and grow (and earn more money and progress in your industry). Go for it. They interviewed you, they think you can do it; you now get in there and prove them right.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 18/01/2023 09:59

Congratulations OP, you should definitely take the job, but have you got a contract from the new job yet? Don't hand your notice in until you do, just in case!

WileECoyoteMeepMeep · 18/01/2023 10:01

I did the opposite and, despite being offered a new job, I stayed.

I’ve regretted it hugely. My wages haven’t been increased as much as they would have, many colleagues have fled the sinking ship, my confidence has now been so crushed by a new change of management and changes to contract terms that I no longer have the confidence to even apply for other jobs.

Go!

Qwerty111 · 18/01/2023 10:05

Congratulations on the new job.

I just came on to quickly say don’t hand in your notice until you have something in writing from the new company.

“Things” can happen in larger companies- restructures, projects getting cancelled etc that might mean you don’t get to start there after all.

FrostyBits · 18/01/2023 10:05

I'm sure you know this OP but make sure you have your offer in writing before handing in your notice. You need to be clear on what the new job is and the package they're offering to make sure you're happy and not just verbally.

I'd take the job. I think you'd regret it otherwise. Good luck!!

fluffyy · 18/01/2023 10:07

Thanks all! I've been asked this morning to fill in some documentation for the new job, and once done I can then get the offer in writing. Just trying to figure out how I can edit a word document from my mobile phone 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I suffer from anxiety (but therapist is helping!!) and so I wonder if my excitement for a new role is tainted by fear of unknown.

I think in your circumstances (concerns about viability of the company / pay) it makes sense to move to the new job.

I have been offered a new job, but it is likely I will stay where I am, my head's done in though.

Good luck

vvork · 18/01/2023 10:10

I felt like this every time I left an old job for a new one but I never once regretted it. You can do this!

Oysterbabe · 18/01/2023 10:11

I was in this situation a couple of months ago. I've worked in my role for 10 years and my boss had just been gushing about how lucky they are to have me. The job is so stressful and I hate it and found something else. I just had to bite the bullet and call my boss and tell him. I was a nervous wreck but it was fine. I've got a couple of weeks left of my notice then start my new job. Time will tell if it was a good move. I hope so, I feel really excited about it.

This! Good luck!

LadyDanburysHat · 18/01/2023 10:15

I always feel like this moving too. 2 years ago I moved for similar reasons to you. A bigger company that could offer me more opportunities to develop. I missed all of my old colleagues so much. But it has been the best decisions ever. My new company encourages me to develop, they give me all the opportunities to do so. I got a promotion after a year, and am working towards my next one.

Aposterhasnoname · 18/01/2023 10:15

I did it after nearly thirty years at my previous company. Best Thing I Ever Did. You won’t regret it.

fluffyy · 18/01/2023 10:35

It's so lovely to read that nobody has regretted their move! 🙌🏼

So. Just handed my notice in. Really shocked and hurt by the response! HR manager was smiling and smirking whilst I was explaining my reasonings. Didn't fight even remotely to get me to stay. Really surprised! It's helped me to recognise I'm making the right decision!

Based on the situation OP, they're probably expecting resignations if staff know the company is struggling and may even be planning further cuts so every resignation may make decisions easier.

Not nice I know, but the harsh reality of business.

Good luck in the new role!

Emmamoo89 · 18/01/2023 14:35

Sounds like an amazing opportunity. Definitely go for it

AlpacaBag · 18/01/2023 14:59

Smirking!?? That's not very kind! Better things to come OP, well done! x

Wookiebowl · 18/01/2023 15:02

To be honest probably does them a favour if you leave if they're struggling- saves them thinking of redundancy etc. Congratulations on your new job, most important person in your career is you and you have to do what's right.
