Scared to hand my notice in today..

I was offered a job yesterday, in the same industry as I'm working in currently but in a much, much bigger organisation with better progression opportunities, step up in my job-role and much better salary.

I am currently in a small business and feel really sad about the thought of leaving. My currently company have given me a great introduction into the sector, and took a chance on me when they had plenty of other applicants for my job role who had been to Uni to gain their qualifications (I had not..) they've been good to me on the whole, and I like who I work with. I know the job role and what's expected of me. I suppose you could say I'm comfortable here and that's probably why I'm terrified of making the move..

I was only job hunting in the first place because my current company have been struggling as of recently, and have been making large cuts. We aren't sure if the company will be here in 5/6 months time but of course are trying our best and remaining optimistic.

With the way things are going, the extra money would be a HUGE help for me. I'm struggling on what I'm being paid currently and don't have two pennies to rub together by the end of the month. I've been living on about £10 for over a week and a half now Blush

I'm so scared about taking a leap into the unknown 🫣

Congratulations!

It is always scary moving job. You've Earth your new job, and you've earnt your new salary!
If your current employer is struggling, then they may be glad of one less salary to pay.

Thanks all.
Yep, I'm really upset by his reaction. Find it really sad.

Oh well. Onwards & upwards!!!

Slightly similar situation. I found myself working as an administrative assistant in a large construction company. My manager, I felt was always very good to me, approved last minute leave requests, put me through training and qualifications, was always very flexible. It made me feel guilty to hand my notice in when I wanted a change of career.

I handed my notice in, and received a lot of guilt-tripping, trying to talk me round with empty promises of a pay rise, requests to extend my notice period (even though I’d given more than required by contract), comments that I’d left them in the lurch, copied into emails discussing how difficult they were finding it to fill my position. I stuck to my guns, left and got a degree in another field. The company went under the following year, all staff made redundant. It turned out this manager knew this when I left and had tried to get me to stay to make his last few months in the job easier. It taught me a lesson, that no matter how much you think you’re valued at work, you are always just an employee.

To be honest at the end of the day you're just another employee and dispensable...I was the best thing since sliced bread hugely missed when on holiday, everyone said don't worry everything will be back to normal when ** is back from holiday etc.
I gave my notice in my manager asked me to please reconsider and stay..I refused but later learnt the manager was only desperate to hold onto me as peak period was coming up. Cheeky fuckers.

So. Just handed my notice in. Really shocked and hurt by the response! HR manager was smiling and smirking whilst I was explaining my reasonings. Didn't fight even remotely to get me to stay. Really surprised! It's helped me to recognise I'm making the right decision!

Can I offer a little insight?

Here’s what is going through somebody’s mind as the sit in front of you holding your resignation.

“Oh shit oh shit oh shit… now what are we going to do …this is a disaster… oh shit oh shit.. stop it’s a good thing for them… this isn’t the end of the world… oh shit oh shit…quit it…look happy for them… smile … Who are we going to transfer the work to until we find a replacement… someone is going to have pick up X… wait am I still smiling…crap it probably looks like a grimace… why are they still talking don’t they know I need to start working on this… hmm I wondering if her new company is still hiring… I hope it’s a good move for them…ok wish them luck”

In other words unless there’s something else going on the vast majority of people have already started planning next steps. I’m not sure if there was a reason you thought they would try to get you to stay… it’s not something that usually happens in this discussion… they’ll come to you later if they think they can offer you a counter. But in a lot of cases with my employees I do think it’s better for them to move on for their own sake.

Congrats on your new job, don’t let your perception of their reaction color your time there. I think you’re reading too much into it.

@fluffyy congratulations! In a similar situation here. I accepted a job offer last week. It's more pay, full time and I'm so nervous. I did get comfortable at current job but I'm not happy. When I handed in notice my manager and team were genuinely sad to see me going but understand why. HR there are a faceless entity.

If the company is in trouble he was probably smirking because you've done them a massive favour.

Glittertwins · 18/01/2023 15:45

I agree with the above. One less redundancy interview and you're better off anyway

Happyhappyday · 18/01/2023 16:11

I’ve ALWAYS had a good experience with a new job, with one exception and there were huge red flags from the get go, I was just so desperate to leave my old job I took it! It was still the right call, and I got out quick! It’ll be great!

Why would HR fight to make you stay, if they're making cuts? They are probably glad it's one less redundancy.

DottieUncBab · 18/01/2023 16:44

Take the new job, I felt similar about my last job, I’d been there six year, but my new job is better than I ever thought it could be plus it was more money!

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 18/01/2023 20:09

Congratulations on your new job, OP!

I wouldn’t worry too much about the HR Manager’s reaction. He isn’t the one interacting with you day to day; for him it will most likely be all about procedure. He probably isn’t even in a position to persuade you to stay - and if the company is in trouble, it may well be the case that anyone leaving won’t be replaced. If that is the case, they’re unlikely to try to persuade you to stay.

There are so many positives about this situation. You have a better job with more money. You weren’t unhappy in your current job, so presumably haven’t had to take the first thing that came up just to escape. You’re going voluntarily rather than being made redundant (which is entirely possible if the company might not even last six months).

Have a nice goodbye lunch or drinks with the colleagues you like, wish everyone well, and then start a new chapter. Good luck 🙂

Roselilly36 · 18/01/2023 20:14

Good luck with your new job, and if it helps I handed in my notice once and the manager said oh great 😂 I like to think he was shocked 😳 but perhaps he wasn’t!
