Pancake day

Viperama · 18/01/2023 00:38

School have asked parents in DC year to make 400 pancakes for pancake day. I’m North American, will I be hated if I contribute with American style pancakes? I make them all the time and it’s super easy for me. Some will have blueberries and others chocolate cooked inside.
DC is allergic to dairy and egg and I’ve a good recipe to make without.
Will everyone be unimpressed???

Dairy and egg free is funny because pancake day is traditionally the start of Lent and the point is to use up all the eggs and milk Grin

No one will care about the style of pancake!

Not as funny as being able to buy pancakes or pancake mix in the supermarket. Talk about missing the whole point of pancake day.

At least the OPs recipe serves a purpose for the dairy or egg allergic or vegans.

Definitely make your version OP, they'll be much nicer. Do you have pancake day in North America like the UK?

Fun fact, in Iceland, they have two pancake days, but I can't remember why.

AnxieTeapot · 18/01/2023 07:53

You'd be a hero in my books!

megletthesecond · 18/01/2023 07:56

We don't eat food from bake sales either due to allergies.

LordSugarTits · 18/01/2023 08:01

"If you are American, then they are what you call a crape."

Surely crepe is French and crape is just a posh turd?

Rainallnight · 18/01/2023 08:09

@littlelid qnd @WineDup You’re being disingenuous. Of course the majority of these pancakes will be made by women, who are doing the majority of the rest of the domestic labour. You only have to read threads on here to realise that.

doublethelove · 18/01/2023 08:09

Personally if I was asked to make pancakes, I would make "American" style ones anyway! That's what a pancake is to me. But I'm Scottish so pancakes are never thin crepe style ones. I would refer to those as English pancakes not British or UK :)

SimonRiley · 18/01/2023 08:12

FixItUpChappie · 18/01/2023 06:15

I'm leaving to google what a UK pancake looks like....

Technically American Pancakes are actually just big Scotch pancakes. So American Pancakes are UK Pancakes. 🙊

speakout · 18/01/2023 08:16

Hearing this makes me very glad my children are older and left school.

All those have to dress as a dinosaur/favourite author/bring in empty coffee tins/chorizo/ make a hat that looks like a pineapple ( all those actual things- and you only find the squished piece of paper in the schoolbag the night before)
Not to mention the cash cow stuff- parents always being asked for money.
I am even now breathing a sigh of relief.

Snap!

a nice Scotch pancake, with butter and jam.

like a crumpet, but thicker.

onyttig · 18/01/2023 08:18

Surely most people will be sending in a packet procured from the most convenient supermarket rather than making them anyway.

Send in some kimchi pancakes and really throw a spanner in the works. 🤣

ThinWomansBrain · 18/01/2023 08:18

donate a pack from Waitrose.
take them out of the pack & no one will know.
Far less detectable than shop-bought cakes

pelargoniums · 18/01/2023 08:20

Wilfully misunderstand and bring in 400 pancakes.

Happycow · 18/01/2023 08:28

If this is for a pancake-tossing competition, they will obvs need to be the floppy big ones, and it wont matter that they are cold and disgusting.

If they are for eating then id go with the nice fluffy amercian ones!

But i feel if the school is asking for pancake contributions it will be for the former....

SirGawain · 18/01/2023 08:30

Random parents making pancakes! Sounds like a food safety nightmare!

DappledThings · 18/01/2023 08:32

I can't fathom bringing in pancakes. I'm a big fan of most food tasting just as good cold as leftovers as it does fresh but pancakes? No way. They are for eating seconds after they come out of the pan. Very weird.

The assumption that women will be the ones making the pancakes is perpetuating the gender norms that exist. Changing attitudes starts with changed language.

In the homes of my family, parents of both genders are responsible for “domestic duties” - and actually, for most of our lives together, I’ve been the primary earner and my (male) partner has been the “primary parent” - and at my daughters school I’d say around 30% of those at pick up and drop off are actually men (presumably dads?) so I do think attitudes ARE changing.

So while statistically it may be more likely that it is mothers doing this task, it’s also not correct to say “do women not have enough to do” because this is perpetuating the myth that it’s automatically a woman’s job.

We need to stop letting men be helpless.

It freaks me out when I order pancakes and get crepes.

I wonder what English people call Scottish pancakes if they call our crepes pancakes?

Someone settle this for me please.

BeyondMyWits · 18/01/2023 08:38

I'd check with the school first... are they for eating or for tossing (most likely at our school as they have races on the field)... would not be making any effort on ones for tossing, just basic big flat pancakes...

user1473878824 · 18/01/2023 08:38

megletthesecond · 18/01/2023 06:49

That is gross. I wouldn't want to eat food prepared in some random persons house. The children with allergies won't be able to eat them either.

Has your school never had a bake sale?

Not for pancakes that should be served hot and fresh... not 2 days old (who has time on a school day!?)

They’d be better off tossing felt pancakes. Reusable and sturdier. But still floppy.

ArseInTheDogBowl · 18/01/2023 09:00

@WineDup you are aware single mothers exist? Not all households have two parents?

Or are we still social pariahs?

As do single fathers? Not sure how that helps prove any point tbh. My point is that gender should be irrelevant when it comes to making pancakes.

Yep I have just reread and thought 'oops'.

megletthesecond · 18/01/2023 09:13

user yes they had loads of bake sales. DS never ate anything from them.
