Would it be unreasonable to do this on your driving test?

If you are driving on your test, and the sun is in your eyes, would it be acceptable to drive with one hand on the wheel and put your other hand up to your eyes to shied from the sun, to see where your going?

Would you discuss this with the examiner first, perhaps or would they expect you to know?

Use the sun visor, not your hand. Two hands on the wheel is their requirement (or it used to be 100 years ago when I took mine)

Isthisexpected · 17/01/2023 13:32

I imagine the correct thing to do is to pull over not drive one handed for a sustained period.

TheGuv1982 · 17/01/2023 13:32

Surely you use the sun visor.

WombatBombat · 17/01/2023 13:33

I’d expect the driver to flip down the visor.

Failing that, pulling off in a safe manner and advising the instructor that they couldn’t see due to the sun.

spurs4ever · 17/01/2023 13:33

Definitely not. Use the sun visor. Hands on the steering shell unless you're changing gear or putting the handbrake on.

WombatBombat · 17/01/2023 13:33

Pulling over.

Definitely not driving with one hand on the wheel for an extended period of time.

spurs4ever · 17/01/2023 13:34

Or steering wheel even!

DestinysGrandchild · 17/01/2023 13:34

Use the visor?

OneTC · 17/01/2023 13:35

I reckon it's pretty poor form, unless it's just for a very brief second (say when waiting at a junction)

If you can't see well enough to drive safely you'd be better off telling the examiner you can't see and ask if you can pull over.

It's also worth investigating whether you need prescription sunnies. Some people's eyes are more sensitive to bright light and they find it more debilitating than others

electricmoccasins · 17/01/2023 13:35

Visor. Sunglasses.

That’s for always, not just your test.

PeekAtYou · 17/01/2023 13:35

You're not punished for taking to the examiner while you drive.
I would explain that the sun is in my eyes so I'm going to pull over and put the visor down before continuing on my way.
Using a hand is risky because you don't know how long the sun will be in your eyes.

Movinghouseatlast · 17/01/2023 13:36

Use the sun visor. Or say you feel.unsafe and pull over. Don't take one hand off the wheel. I have never driven with my hand shading my eyes in all my years driving, it wouldn't even occur to me.

trollopolis · 17/01/2023 13:36

If you need to ask this, then are you ready for your test?

Both hands on wheel (at 'ten to two' position) except when you need one hand to use another control (eg gear lever, or in this case sun visor) is pretty basic first lesson stuff

Bluevelvetsofa · 17/01/2023 13:38

I can understand the question because, if you’re small, quite often the visor doesn’t obscure all of the brightness.

Maybe ensure that the driver’s seat is raised high enough, pull down the visor and make sure you have your sunglasses.

OneTC · 17/01/2023 13:39

at 'ten to two' position

Yeah they stopped that quite a while ago

Not specifically test related but gives some general info on the subject www.essexlive.news/news/uk-world-news/drivers-warned-highway-code-sunglasses-7208084

steppemum · 17/01/2023 13:40

can I just point out that winter sun is low in the sky and therefore for most women the sun visor will not be low enough down the windscreen to shield their eyes?
I'm fine, (5'8") my dd, who is 5'6" is not, sh ehates driving in the winter sun

AmberGer · 17/01/2023 13:41

My eyes are very sensitive to light. I use the visor and polarised lenses. They don't have to be expensive ones. Just make sure they're polarised. My last pair were around £3.99 from aldi middle aisle.

Badbadbunny · 17/01/2023 13:42

Park up somewhere safe and discuss with the examiner if you can't see clearly with the visor down.

You are allowed to have a conversation with the examiner and ask for advice. They have rules/guidelines as to what they can say and advise you in unusual circumstances. You can suggest a course of action and they can tell you whether to do it or not. Far better to ask, than to just do it and get a minor or major for it. If it's a scenario where they're not allowed to say something, they'll tell you.

My son had to ask for advice during his test. The examiner had asked him to park up at the side of the road, and then pull out again and carry on driving up the road. The thing was that there was a constant stream of traffic, no gap to pull into. He'd been told by his instructor not to indicate his intention to pull out until there was a gap and not to start edging out or indicate to hope another driver would let him in. After a few minutes of being sat there watching his mirror for a gap, he told the instructor there wasn't a gap and asked him if he could indicate in the hope of someone letting him out, examiner told him yes, do it, as they'd be there all day if he didn't! At the end, the examiner said he was pleased he'd asked as he'd have got at least a minor if he'd done it without explaining why and asking for guidance, maybe even a major if he'd edged out too forcefully!

Yes, should have said between ten-to-two and quarter-to-three, but I thought it was a bit wordy.

But definitely two hands!!

itswednesdayy · 17/01/2023 13:43

I would be like “I’m just pulling over as I’m struggling to see” and make a show of doing that safely and smoothly eg checking all your mirrors, watching your impact on other road users. It’s not really a thing they can mark you down for, but it is an opportunity for you to get bonus marks I suppose if you’re fine with parking.

Thats harsh, some people have already commented that the sun visor still might not help etc.

The winter sun is a problem at the moment to drivers or can be.
Answer from me is I would discuss with instructor first, dont take hands off the wheel.

about as fine as taking your test on a hot day so opening your window and resting your arm on it.

driving 101 maintain control of the vehicle at all times.

I believe you can get pulled over for eating and drinking (any drink, not just alcohol ) while driving.

itswednesdayy · 17/01/2023 13:47

I have sensitive eyes so wear sunglasses all the time by default (just fashionable ones, but driving safe). If I don’t cover my eyes, my eyes might start to water and my vision might get a tiny bit blurry if my eyes are dry. If my eyes aren’t dry, then the sun doesn’t really impact me, but I’m not diligent with using eye drops so they are dry most the time.

KimMG · 17/01/2023 13:51

I was an instructor for 7 years - I kept a visor extension in the car for shorter pupils.
