To be totally put off when childminders have dogs?

and have them around the children?
maybe it stems from my slight fear of dogs - or the number of reports of children being mauled in the news.. but I would never want to hand my baby over to someone who has their dog around children. We have dogs in the family, all lovely and have never hurt a fly but I still keep the majority of my attention on them if the dogs is nearby as you just never know what could happen (especially with grabby baby hands)

It makes me feel awful that I can’t trust but sending my children off to a house with dogs in that I don’t actually know give me a sicky feeling.

I would choose dog free childcare too. I wouldn’t feel sad about it, it’s just sensible.

We have dogs in the family- lovely dogs - but I even keep eyes on my 8 yo around dogs.

YANBU. I like dogs, but there isn’t a chance I would’ve sent my kids to a childminder without a dog.

EggsActly · 15/01/2023 11:27

WITH a dog!

AnotherAppleThief · 15/01/2023 11:33

Sounds like you're trying to damage the reputation of childminders with dogs. Sorry to say but I have a dog, am graded outstanding and full with a waiting list.

Snugglemonkey · 15/01/2023 11:41

I love dogs and would have one, except I feel my DC are too young. I will do when they are older. I would pick a childminder with no pets though.

BinauralBeats · 15/01/2023 11:48

My mum was a childminder while I was at primary school, we had a dog before that and then a dog after that but never while she was child minding. I like dogs, I grew up with one in the house and my children are growing up with our dog too.

However I probably wouldn't send them to a childminder with a dog either. I love my dog, but she's a dog and I certainly don't trust her implicitly. Any dog can turn so you need to have extra precautions like many have mentioned above to keep everyone safe and understand your dog's behaviour and what they are telling you. I know I'm doing that, but you can't be sure other people always are.

Also I've always had small dogs, at their current age and size my children would have a good change against our dog. She could certainly injure us but hopefully no worse than that. I would never have a dog bigger or stronger than me and can still feel uneasy when I see them out and about.

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/01/2023 11:48

Agree, wouldn’t have used one either.

I'm afraid you are the one being "silly (such a patronising term). Have a quick look at the research on PubMed.

What research is there on PubMed that shows that an unknown Alsatian bounding towards your won’t attack you if you aren’t frightened of it? What information explains that only scared children are mauled by dogs, and that the way to protect from animal attacks is to ensure your children aren’t afraid of the animals? I would definitely be interested to see it.

All living things have a smell, that's natural! That includes the kids, you're just nose blind to your own.

But my kids don’t smell like dogs. Dogs smell awful. Not many humans do

Fleabigg · 15/01/2023 11:49

I wouldn’t use one, thankfully there are alternatives. I’m sure other dog people are happy to use one, but it’s not for me.

No. Love dogs, our own oks girl was fantastic. Just loved our kids more.

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 15/01/2023 11:56

100% agree @MickeyMouseShithouse My DC went to a childminder when I went back to work part time (3 days a week,) and when she got a dog, I removed them straight away. She never had a dog when I signed up with her, and when my DC started going, and I didn't sign up for a childminder with a dog. Put her in the care of another childminder ASAP. I do not dislike dogs, but they are unpredictable, and can snap in the blink of an eye. Like hell was I having my pre school toddlers in the same house as someone else's dogs.

Exactly this. If others want to allow their babies and toddlers in a stranger's house with their dog(s) running around (and the childminder is a stranger, they are not family or friends,) then good luck to them. That is their choice. It's not mine.

Lost123454 · 15/01/2023 12:01

Disgusting and dangerous

LlynTegid · 15/01/2023 12:01

It would very much depend on the dog and the childminder, but I would start on the premise that I'd need to see the dog is well cared for and behaved first.

Don't be silly that is not how research works. But there is research that shows that if you are fearful around dogs they pick up on it and are more likely to bite.

Our childminder had a dog who sadly passed recently. He was a lovely old little dog and we had zero concerns. DS loves animals anyway and it only built his confidence with dogs which I would prefer than him being petrified of them

MarshaBradyo · 15/01/2023 12:07

Yanbu

Michellebops · 15/01/2023 12:10

I'm not a dog fan but I have no issues sending my daughter to her childminder who does have a Labradoodle. This dog is like a child and is fab for the kids.

Most dogs are until they bite someone. Dog bites can result in sepsis (personal experience).

AllAboutSlime · 15/01/2023 12:11

I agree. Our first childminder got a small dog after we'd been using her for a years. I don't think it's a great idea from either the dog's perspective or the children's.

Any puncture wound can result in sepsis if it's not kept clean and looked after properly - including bites from toddlers to other toddlers.

I had the opposite view. I love dogs. I've always had dogs but my dh is very allergic so no way we could have a dog. This made me very sad. It was the days before all these new breeds that seem to not affect allergies.
I specifically sought out a childminder with dogs so that my children would have a good relationship with dogs and not be scared.
My childminder's dogs had been round children all their lives and were very gentle boys. My kids loved taking them for walks and throwing balls for them in the garden.
We even watched the dogs when the childminder was on holiday. My husband took antihistamines for those couple of weeks of the year.
When the eldest doggie was dying, my children went round to say goodbye. These pets were like part of our family too.

HelloJan · 15/01/2023 12:36

Yeah, I wouldn't trust dogs.

Sodamncold · 15/01/2023 12:37

Never in a month of Sundays would I place my child with a childminder with dogs. Never ever ever. Any breed.
