People that Say they don't watch TV

Aquarius1234 · 14/01/2023 22:04

OMG so annoying. Esp those that lie.
You do watch TV so stop making out you spend all evening not looking at a screen!
Or those that say they never watch movies or go cinema. You then find out they go twice a year.
Watching sport or netflix counts as watching tv regardless if you watch it on your laptop or not.

I think people at being deliberately obtuse. Listing how little TV they watch. This thread is not about you.

This thread is about those who need to tell others they don’t watch any TV, without ‘admitting’ they watch loads of stuff on screens in other ways.

"So do you watch tv"
"No I don't watch TV but I do put movies on a screen with a projector"
"Omg you do watch TV how you can lie like that I need to call the police that is serious"

Sure I am being dramatic, and if it annoys people it annoys people

Bur for the love of God is it that serious????

Or is it 'omg everything that happens is about me I feel so judged by everyone no matter what they say it has to be turned to me needing to feel they are making me feel bad'

tigger1001 · 15/01/2023 09:28

I've never been asked if I watch tv. Instead I usually get asked if I watch a particular show.

But I do think what people mean if they ask if you watch tv, is do you watch tv shows/films. Not if you actually watch them on a tv screen. And I do think these who insist on saying no (but then go on to say they watch Netflix etc) are trying to be superior.

@PriamFarrl

The answer to your question is in the common vernacular you are watching TV, yes.

”Watching TV” as a phrase encapsulates consuming audiovisual content on some kind of screen. This is the essence of the activity. The method of delivery of this content and the size and specifications of the device you choose to watch it on are irrelevant.

You could argue that watching a series on an old analogue black and white TV set is different from watching a series in colour on an Apple TV box, but it’s a specious logic.

The action/behaviour is the same.

I agree. But some people on this thread are arguing that watching a chosen program rather than live TV or watching via something that isn’t an actual television isn’t watching TV.

No it’s not it’s very trivial in the scheme of things.

But it’s classic middle class humbug and stealth one-upmanship. It tells you a lot about the way people try to make themselves look better than others. So worth discussing.

Nah. It’s just mildly amusing to see smug preachy types be ‘caught out’!

How are you posting here then? 🤔

Isn’t it obvious WetLettuce was posting in jest and making a point?!

Pjsandpringles · 15/01/2023 09:34

Id much rather read a book than watch TV. Cant remember the last time I sat down and watched something TBH. We have a tv and the kids have it on but I have no interest in the trash that's on. We don't even have a TV licence

Exdpisatwat · 15/01/2023 09:35

I used to work in McDonald's and at least twice a week someone would come in that claimed to have never been in a McDonald's before, had no idea what we sell, didn't know know to order, what type of food is it, etc. They'd then order a double quarter pounder with cheese, extra pickles, large fries, 6 nuggets, chocolate shake and a mcflurry 🤔🤣

Ah so people are jealous of middle class people who don't watch TV but do watch TV because they were taught at conspiracy school 'as you're middle class you need to lie about what you do because the plebs need to feel hard done by'

OK got the letter sent by gold class carrier pigeon

VoluptuaSneezelips · 15/01/2023 09:42

I think most people who say I don't watch tv tend to mean they don't watch the regular tv channels on tv rather than they don't watch any tv shows or films. I know thats what I mean when I say I have said I don't really watch tv and it's what I tend to take it to mean if someone says the same to me.
I find it stops people bombarding me with small talk about soaps, reality tv, talk shows, daytime telly shows, adverts', the sorts of shows people watch on tv but with the exception of some very popular shows you generally wouldn't watch on streaming services. I do tend to follow up with a comment about preferring to watch Netflix, or Shudder.
I see it in the same vain as 'Im not into sports' which is often just a way to shut down football/cricket/rugby talk as you'll often find a person saying that might watch formula 1, showjumping, snowboarding, worlds strongest man contest or just The Olympics.

Just a reminder to everyone that
1-IT IS NOT ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY DON'T WATCH TV
2-books should be helpful with reading comprehension
3- "the trash" is that superior crap people get annoyed about.

😂

Thepeopleversuswork · 15/01/2023 09:45

@WandaWonder

I’m constantly told by friends who are not British that they are baffled by the class system here and don’t understand it.

This is a classic example of this sort of baffling class brag.

“Not watching TV” is a subtle but unmistakable way of signalling to other MC people that you are people like us. It’s the kind of thing that people not in this golden circle are rightly irritated and confused by.

It’s illogical, untrue and serves no purpose other than very subtle showing off.

aSpanielintheworks · 15/01/2023 09:46

I'm hearing impaired. I don't watch TV. Apart from Casualty on a Saturday night with Subtitles, I find TV frustrating and you will normally find me faceplanted into a book instead.

Yes!!!

I still don't get it. What does class have to do with TV watching is simply beyond me😂

But while people talk about MC, most common reason after "i don't enjoy it" is time. So coming back late from work etc, shifts etc. Isn't that more working class issue?

I don't know😂

Pjsandpringles · 15/01/2023 09:54

@Calphurnia88 what's interesting?

LlynTegid · 15/01/2023 10:04

I don't get why it is annoying. Sometimes actually useful to know, so you don't upset them by talking about a tv show they plan to see later via Iplayer or other catch up services. Or a film you've seen at the cinema and they will see via Netflix.

Serano · 15/01/2023 10:22

I get you OP.

I've had people claim in the past 'I don't watch TV', implying they spend their time on higher pursuits such as reading, listening to the radio and writing the next great novel. It then transpires they are streaming shows on their tablets, and pretty lowbrow stuff at that. It's all a bit disingenuous.

Nail on the head there lass, it is the implied intellectual snobbery.

In that scenario though surely the conversation would go more like this...

Person 1: Did you watch the final episode of <insert TV show> last night? I can't believe how it ended!
Person 2: No I haven't watched it yet, we're catching up tonight

Rather than...

Person 1: Did you watch the final episode of <insert TV show> last night? I can't believe how it ended!
Person 2: No I don't watch TV

But why would you need to lie and say you don't watch TV?

If someone asks if you saw The Apprentice last night and you plan to watch on catch-up, all you need to say is "not yet - I'll watch it on iPlayer over the weekend".

You have a TV that the kids watch but you don’t pay for the licence? I would be far too scared to do that!
