To expect that a hospital should be able to meet my dietary needs?

Pretty sure I’m not being unreasonable! Been in hospital 24 hours now and just been to eat a meal for the first time (my choice). There is nothing gluten free. I have coeliac disease which they’ve known since admission. Gluten makes me vomit. So I can literally eat pepper, cucumber and lettuce. To add insult to injury this is a psych ward and I was admitted under section (still furious about this) so I can’t even leave and go and buy some food.

You're out of your tree.

Spend a short time doing research before you hurl insults - the low fat, avoid read meat, avoid eggs, eat whole grains etc. is utter nonsense. The Standard Western Diet riddled with processed seed oils, processed carbs/sugars and grains (whole or otherwise) is poison to humans.

@Grrrrdarling

I dont think they believe that butter beans have butter in them. Another poster said that they couldnt get anything vegan/dairy free as when they were in hospital, the naked beans had dairy added to them. So she couldn't even have baked beans.
I think the poster you quoted was referring to that with a bit off tongue in cheek "beans with butter in them" comment.

I get ya… lol
I did think it might be tongue in cheek but went with serious when I weighed up & went left if the 50/50 choice. 😝

Sure, but none of that relates to meat being your only source of food.

If people have chronic and persistent illnesses/health issues that are relieved or even cured by eating only animal products, then why dismiss it? Significant anecdotal evidence of weight loss in those who have tried every other avenue, lessening of mental health conditions, allergies & autoimmune conditions, migraines, eczema, diabetes, arthritis & epilepsy.

Is it not more likely they are "cured" from health conditions because they eliminated all the aforementioned oils, grains, processed carbs and sugars?

Non meat eater, I was served up shepherds pie. Ran out of my order so they just picked something.

Unfortunately NHS is in dire financial straits. Accommodating medical dietry needs of course, accommodating the many different likes and dislikes would be too much especially given it’s temporary.

This is nothing new. I had this 14 years ago over DD. She had been prescribed the ketogenic diet for her epilepsy. The consultant had had to apply for the PCT to fund it. We were told to regard it as just as much a treatment, as one of her drugs. We had to promise to commit to it 24/7. We couldn’t do it for 6 days, and then as we were fed up with it, have a day off! Ketosis had to be maintained.

Next time, she was admitted to our local hospital, they couldn’t provide scrambled eggs for her breakfast and we had to see their dietician, who was in meetings until the afternoon of the next day. Luckily, I was able to get some from the restaurant. The dietician told me, they weren’t funded for it, and DD should have gone to the regional centre. I told her, they weren’t funded for it either, because all it consisted off was advice from a dietician and prescriptions for dietary supplements and calogen, which any hospital should have. Anyway, no ambulance would take her on blue lights to a hospital 45 minutes drive away, instead of this, our local one 10 minutes away.

I found it bizarre that we were told to regard it as a treatment, just as much as any drug, yet the NHS found it difficult to do a tuna salad, doused in mayonnaise - when she was on drugs, costing £500 a month, and was having 1 - 3 999 calls a week!

Absolutely! Some people cannot tolerate vegetables either, an elimination diet leaves them with meat. Doctors are seeing the incredible health benefits of eating a carnivore or ketovore diet. My original comment was that meat is not unhealthy for heart patients, a carnivore diet is prescribed by some doctors to heal patients with all sorts of ailments. We’ve been fed a lot of misinformation about what is and what is not healthy, people still think the food pyramid is the way to eat.

I know I'm late to this but wanted to share my experience of gluten-free was in hospital. I have refractory coeliac disease, gluten ataxia and very serious vision problems caused by why the gluten ataxia. So not just a case of 'I want to be fussy'

During a weeks I was glutened 6 times with horrendous effect and nursing staff we're not bothered, they couldn't care.

50% of meals delivered to the ward had no gluten-free options whatsoever so I had no food.

No available gluten-free breakfasts.

The board above my bed said no special diet despite being told daily about my gluten-free status.

People serving sandwiches at tea time and breakfast meals were at best ignoring me and at worst rude about me from where I could hear them. They openly talk about me comma tutted at me and kissed their teeth or told me I was causing extra work for them.( this was not extra work this was looking after a person who deserves to be looked after).

This was an emergency admittance and I was unconscious so I couldn't take food in with me me. I did not have visitors so nobody could bring food in for me. I was not allowed off the ward so I couldn't even go in search of food and even if I could I have no money.

I asked to speak to the catering manager 15 days in a row. I did not see him, absolutely disgraceful.

This is in a city that has the world leading gluten ataxia specialist, a world-leading coeliac gastroenterologist and and a gluten related research facility. If they can't get it right then who can?

The medical care was just as bad

( please excuse any weird typos or other words that don't belong there ; I use speech to text and it is very difficult to edit it if it is not understanding my accent)

JarByTheDoor · 27/01/2023 20:24

Assuming Hallamshire, can't say I'm surprised 😒

(And if the accent not being understood is a Sheffield one, I feel your pain.)

I loved your reply!

I go to the RHH, but the nightmare inpatient stay was at, the at the NGH.

JarByTheDoor · 28/01/2023 00:31

Also not surprised 🤣

Josieangel21 · 28/01/2023 21:38

Oh my lovely, take care xxx no advice, just do not be afraid to get support from charitable organisations, that are there and give one to one advice. I was scared to ask for help/advice but they literally falling over themselves to be there for you. I had a terrible time and seemed lived off smoked salmon and raw carrots. Cravings ehh? But a biology teacher and a Jo republic said your body tells you what it needs so listen to it and even if it's through supplements, take 'em. I wanted to eat scallops, never entered my mind before, but something to do with needing iodine. Love who you are, and great you posted and shared. Xxx

Josieangel21 · 28/01/2023 21:49

Wrong thread! But following this too, as partner in hozzi more than he's home. I bring food in as it's so hit and miss, with meat and gluten free diet. I feel all your pain and know it's hard. Can you get brought in shop bought gluten free to sustain you, someone from a charity might be able too. Shelf rice puddings etc, nothing chilled. I know it's not the answer.

Josieangel21 · 28/01/2023 21:51

It was for you x

Gluten free diet is a medical need , it makes me very ill for several days. veganism is a choice ( I’m not mocking ) and ime gf has been dropped in favour of vegan. I’ve had the same problem in hospital ,OP.

Bignanny30 · 02/02/2023 21:59

What about the poor people who haven’t got someone to bring food in for them. They really don’t seem to care and it could cost lives. I was in hospital last year. I was stuck in A & E for 48 hours and despite being diabetic I was not offered anything to eat or drink for 24 hours. In the end my daughter brought me some food. But as I said what about those who can’t get anyone to bring food to them. When I eventually got on the ward, I noticed that the menu choices were very limited. There was only one vegetarian dish on each menu (I’m not vegetarian, but I noticed this) and no vegan choice or GF choices. The food at this hospital has used to be cooked on site and was pretty good, but now it’s bought in from a catering company. Hope you get better soon OP
