To be annoyed with vinted sellers choice of condition

Blinkingheckythump · 14/01/2023 07:50

I have been looking on vinted for some clothes for my lo and am so fed up with sellers marking items as 'good' or even more annoyingly as 'very good' condition when they have stains on them. In what world is that the right condition?! Surely 'satisfactory' is for anything marked, 'good' for faded or bobbled, very good for well very good condition I.e no marks or wash wear, and then new.
I don't want to buy something and have the faff of trying to get stains out, most likely not being able to and then being stuck with stained clothes. I understand some people don't mind stains and use them or messy play etc, I'm not debating if they should be sold, I just want to set the search to very good condition and not have my time wasted looking at items which are stained. Please tell me I'm not alone in this? Or explain to me if you mark stained items as good or very good condition why you do it?
Yabu stained clothing is OK as good or very good
Yanbu it should be satisfactory

I haven't bought anything from Vinted, although I have the app. I use eBay a lot.

Call me cynical/pessimistic but I tend to avoid anything described as good (as opposed to excellent or as new) because good is a very subjective descriptor. One person's good condition can be very different to another, whereas excellent or as new has less room for interpretation. I also feel more within my rights to challenge the seller if an excellent or as new item arrives with signs of wear.

That said, I did buy an as new jumper which arrived bobbled - despite a bit of push back from the seller (who reasoned that it was second hand, so what did I expect), I got a refund and noted that when she seller relisted she lowered the price and changed the description.

Calphurnia88 · 14/01/2023 08:47

As a seller I tend to go overboard on pointing out any flaws (up close photos, referencing said photos in the description). I also reflect the flaws in the starting price and make this clear to any potential buyers.

I would say this is partly because I'm an honest person, but mostly because I don't have the time or energy to deal with disgruntled buyers.

I hate Vinted.

I bought three "good condition" items from one seller. One Item was covered in felt tip pen (I think) marks and another had holes. You can only return items at your own expense so it wasn't worth it.

The seller left a response to my feedback saying that I was trying to get a refund but keep her items. They went in the bin!

Vinted were fucking useless!

Did you mark it as 'I have a problem with this item' within 2 days of receiving it? I've received something that I had an issue with (marked but not listed as so) I said I was going to wash it and see if it came out. The seller kindly refunded me immediately without waiting to see if it washed out, including the postage. I don't know if that's because it was in the initial 2 days you get to raise an issue?

Totally agree with you. I always look at new or very good. Love it when they describe it is EXCELLENT CONDITION and then say, just a small hole/tear, doesn't affect yse etc 🙈

I was selling a perfect condition branded baby set. I only listed it at £2 as wasn't fussed, just needed it gone, despite other identical ones selling for £5+. I had one buyer make me an offer of £1.20 and £1.80! I know i wanted to sell it, but that was just taking the piss when every other one on there was double the price.

Whatwhatwhatnow · 14/01/2023 08:51

I have had generally good results buying baby stuff, although I once fell foul of the fact that EU and UK shoe sizes are not directly comparable. I now only buy stuff where the label/box is shown, with the height range/shoe size shown.

I also tend to only buy brands where I'm familiar with the sizing after ending up with adult clothes that didn't fit me.

Selling wise, I've only really had success with banded stuff or items with a quirk (jumper with asymmetric neckline, that sort of thing).

Blinkingheckythump · 14/01/2023 08:52

mummyp1gs · 14/01/2023 08:18

Like @Mummyboy1 I under mark stuff too. I've sold quite a bit on Vinted and ime, most people tend to only search for the very good option, so people just list those items to flog.

It's so frustrating as a buyer though! My husband bought a lift the flap potty training book for my toddler and it was listed as very good but half the flaps were missing. He complained and the seller's excuse was that she was a busy mum who worked in London full time. How that is relevant, I don't know! He simply responded that he's a busy dad who also works in London full time!

How bizarre a response is that?! Especially the location, does it make it impossible to check the quality of the item you're listing if you live in London?!

That sounds annoying and I can definitely believe it, I look at all photos really carefully, but obviously some stuff cant be seen.

I think as Vinted is so cheap people take the risk and some sellers are bad about describing their items.

At the other end there are some amazing bargains to be had, I am selling a brand new Kooples Black jacket for £40.00, and have also seen some really good bargains.

Blinkingheckythump · 14/01/2023 08:55

xyzandabc · 14/01/2023 08:21

Good is around the 4th category down in terms of condition. New with tags, new without tags, very good, good. I don't expect good to be in excellent condition. I'd expect good condition items to probably only be suitable for messy play/tree climbing/nursery type days.

Set your search terms to item marked new or very good only. Then you won't see any only marked as good. I only search for and buy thing marked new or very good and not had any issues.

I think you've missed the part where people are listing stained items as very good. I have set the filters to this. Personally I think good shouldn't have marks either, but very good? Nope definitely not stained

Vinted is great, you just have to be really selective. I buy and sell on there, I’ve had one duff item out of dozens bought. If something is super cheap ask lots of questions re: marks/stains etc. it’s usually cheap for a reason.

I hate Vinted bashing, it’s such a great site and you can get some incredible bargains!

ViscountessBridgerton · 14/01/2023 08:58

I loved Vinted when I first started using it but as it's become more popular there is more and more crap on there and nasty sellers. One seller sent me some very aggressive messages when she requested a bundle but didn't buy it and was annoyed when the items had subsequently sold. Another sent me a coat that was a completely different size to what she had advertised and was a bit arsey when I didn't want to send it back at my expense. I still sell on there but won't be buying much anymore.

OhmygodDont · 14/01/2023 08:59

This is why I always always list with a million photos. Front, back, arms separate, the brand tag, the size label. Zoomed in to show details while item photo etc et.

I won’t buy from people who sling up an item with just one photo and a description of say good top.

drpet49 · 14/01/2023 09:00

Ive reported listing where the item is clearly used but the seller marks it as new. Shoes in particular

Blinkingheckythump · 14/01/2023 09:01

Lamentations · 14/01/2023 08:23

The Vinted description of 'good' for sellers means it has wear and tear but that won't necessarily be clear to buyers if you've never sold anything yourself. There should be photos of any defects so you can make an informed choice though. I'd only buy 'very good' or better because I expect 'good' to be well-worn.

Oh I understand the parameters they set, when you search for condition it tells you them. But people are listing stained items as very good. I wouldn't even say an item is good if stained, and definitely not very good

Im a vinted seller this is how i work this out:
Satisfactory - missing buttons, small holes though I just don't sell anything with stains
Good -perfectly fine but as is used and lived in may have lost colour or have bobbling
Very good -like new no issues

Buttons and bobbling can be fixed if i like something i buy it like that fix it up and good as knew. I live in bobbled jumpers anyway it's not a big issue to me.
I have bought stained (but clean)underwear as a set. Its just a personal thing. People can sell what they like as ling as people want to buy it.

crochetmonkey74 · 14/01/2023 09:05

I've had nothing but good experiences with Vinted , as a buyer and a seller. I've not bought baby clothes though. I always try to look really carefully and avoid items with a crap picture.

VanCleefArpels · 14/01/2023 09:06

This is why I only ever buy new with tags - still plenty of choice!

Blinkingheckythump · 14/01/2023 09:07

Dramaalpacas · 14/01/2023 08:29

Im surprised to hear this. I’ve bought and sold on vinted a lot over the last year and I’ve had nothing but good experiences. I’ve got some beautiful new outfits for me and the kids. I do always buy from people who have 5 star ratings and quite a few of them ( I also go to the comments to check the reviews are for selling not buying). I also look for things that will re-sell easily if they don’t fit well.

I'm talking about items I've seen listed with photos showing stains but listed as good and very good. I've not bought them, it's just wasted my time looking at their listings

Blossomandbee · 14/01/2023 09:11

I think it's the perils of buying secondhand online. There will always be people who are dishonest or that simply don't care about or notice stains.
I've had my fair share of bad buys off of eBay too, including bundles of very stained clothes when my Dc were little. Ebay was far more of a faff to get a refund from too. The one Vinted purchase I had an issue with I got an instant refund within minutes of raising a complaint.

Blinkingheckythump · 14/01/2023 09:11

BertieBotts · 14/01/2023 08:34

Ah see I can explain the 2 sizes smaller thing. Half Vinted's fault, half the clothing industry's fault.

You get two ways to list a size - a single number (e.g. 6 years, 116cm) or a range (5-6 years, 110-116)

In the UK, a range of age is standard (5-6 years) But after 24 months, Vinted for some inexplicable reason, possibly because they are incorrectly following US sizing norms for the UK, use single years as their category. Therefore, if you have something that is 5-6 years, should you list it as 5 years, or 6 years? It could be a 50-50 guess, but most people if they had to pick one would pick 5 because that feels the most logical.

In most European countries, a single height measurement is standard (116). However, vinted use a range as their category. So if you have an item that is size 116, should you list it as 110-116, or 116-122? Again, 50/50, but most people assume that 116-122 is correct, because it feels like size 116 should mean "from 116cm".

Then comes the real stupid thing - the clothing industry at some point in time when figuring out standardised sizes has decided to do the exact opposite of what would be logical. 5-6 years is the same size as 116cm, which means 110-116cm, which means a single number is the larger in the range and means "up to" not "from".

So 80% of people on Vinted naturally aren't familiar with the discrepancy between EU and UK clothing sizes and tend to pick the wrong option when uploading/searching because it feels logical to them. Therefore when you search for "6 years/110-116" clothing, you end up with everything from size 110 (4-5) all the way up to 6-7, even though nobody has deliberately listed wrong.

Always photograph or mention the actual size from the label in the listing. If it fits big/small for the size, choose the smallest to list as and write this in the listing. Only buy a size or two ahead so it doesn't matter if it's smaller than stated and/or look for a photo of the label and/or a stated size in the description or message the person and ask "Is this 4-5 or 5-6?"

Yeah this is another time waster of vinted that bugs me. If I want something in a 5-6 I don't want to have to search all listings for 5 and 6 and then have to slog through them looking for actual 5-6 and not 4-5 and 6-7 as well

The thing is a lot of time these aren't cheap enough to bother with once you've factored in the fee and postage

I've only ever had good experiences on Vinted. Bought tons, never sold!

Papayap · 14/01/2023 09:19

It makes me annoyed too. Ooh lovely boden dress described as very good- click on it and there’s stains all over it and described as ‘plenty of life left’.

Im pissed off at the moment as just bought a top and on arrival I discover it’s three sizes too big! Seller goes ‘oops!’ and then of course I’ve got to pay to return it.

user147283190 · 14/01/2023 09:19

This really winds me up. Sometimes I filter by 'new with tags' if I'm looking for a gift for someone. Then in the description the seller will say something like excellent condition, only worn a few times! I always report the listing as I hate the dishonesty and time wasting.

mynamesnotMa · 14/01/2023 09:21

I fucking hate Vinted.
Some dirty skank took weeks to post something and posted a false tracking thing they marked it as sold.
Too many scammers

I wouldn't buy anything stained, faded or bobbled and wouldn't expect any of these on a good item
