AIBU to want boots that fit my wide calves? 👢

That's it really! I'm a size 18 with big legs. I recently bought a dress that would be lovely with long boots (boots that go to below the knee, so basically not ankle boots)! But none fit over my calves. Any suggestions?

I really struggle with this. Tried so many pairs, if they fit round my calves they were too tight on my feet or came up too high. Evans we're okay for my chunky calves, also simply be I think.

Eventually I found some from new look when I'd given up looking. They're slouch style, not quite knee high, and so comfortable. Hadn't expected them to fit because they only have a half zip and they're not specifically for wide legs.

Hi, am interested in a slouchy style, could you possibly post a pic, please?

I've had massive calves since I was 13. Even as a dress size 8 no fashion boots would be wide enough. I've always had Evans boots but be careful as some of them are very, very wide. You need to measure your calves at the widest part and look for wide calf boots right width. Ebay is great for getting bargains. "Wide calf" isn't enough information though - make sure they are measured before you buy. Mine calves are 17 inches around so I always know what I'm looking for.

Duo. Look on Ebay and Vinted

Like others, I've found Evans really good for boots for people with larger calves.

I inherited my Dad’s Welsh rugby-player’s muscly calves, and many years of ballet just made ‘em musclier, even though the rest of me is slim. Even as a child I couldn’t get into my Mum’s knee-length boots - why oh why didn’t I inherit her lovely legs?!

But in the last decade or so, I’ve found lots of boots that fit, so perhaps legs are getting bigger generally?

HomemadePickle · 14/01/2023 12:49

@MavisMcMinty I think you’re right that there are more boots around that fit - my slim calves friends are now the ones moaning that they can’t find slim fit ones that suit them.

Though having said that, Hunter wellingtons still don’t fit me. Much to my horror when staying at a fancy country hotel and they proudly presented me with a pair. That I couldn’t get on.

Yes, “Huntress” wellies were wider-calved but normal Hunters always a no-go for me. Now I have Aigle boots and they’re way better and more durable than Hunters these days. (If I still had horses I’d go with Hunters, as you can get the feet into stirrups, unlike many other wellies.)

Fairfax and Favor do three calf widths in a lot of their boots - narrow, standard and sporting. They are quite pricey but excellent quality, I have several pairs (standard width, so I can't comment on the fit of the wider ones).

MavisMcMinty · 14/01/2023 13:26

Heh at “sporting”!

Evans or Fashion World (check Crazy Clearance for very reasonable boots). If you want boots for walking dogs etc, look at the Muckboot company, long neoprene boots.

If you want to splurge, look at Ariat Grasmere or Mountain Horse. Lots of horse riders have this issue, big calves due to the constant muscle building/use.

I note that Duo boots have had a lot of recommendations but please be wary of this company - every few years they go under, orders go astray/unfulfilled and then boom they've rebranded. They've been Duo, Ted and Muffy and are now Duo Boots again. Look at the trustpilot reviews and always use a credit card to purchase. They went under just before lockdown (March 2020) and I ended up with 2 expensive pairs of boots that didn't fit, were horribly poor quality and I couldn't return either.

Gabor do a wide fit, Dune, and I adore Bareback footwear which is more outdoor/equestrian but fab quality and fit.

Scarlettpixie · 14/01/2023 15:13

I have the same problem and Evans boots are great.

ReallyWishIHadntDoneThat · 14/01/2023 15:15

New Look have a wide fit range that have extra calf room if you're on a budget.

HipposHaveNipples · 14/01/2023 21:41

@MavisMcMinty it always makes me chuckle... god forbid they just say 'wide'!
