To think all dogs should be muzzled in public?

By law.

Many things have been banned as dangerous where less people have been injured and killed.

Obviously we can’t ban dogs but it should be law to have them muzzled outside of your own property to reduce the injuries and deaths they cause.

I think this would be good for certain breeds especially larger more typically dangerous breeds

HoppingAndHoping · 13/01/2023 20:14

Definitely not in the case of service animals, no.

Aren't most dog attacks by unsupervised dogs (off-leash etc)? If yes: Idk if this would actually help tbh...

I would prefer stricter ownership requirements to mandatory muzzles.

mozzyworries · 13/01/2023 20:14

I think that seems like a gross overreaction for the vast majority of dogs who are not aggressive

Poppitt58 · 13/01/2023 20:15

How would you police people muzzling dogs inside their own homes? Considering this is where the majority of recent fatal attacks have happened.

GuyFawkesDay · 13/01/2023 20:16

How does my gundog do his job?

DonnaDonna0 · 13/01/2023 20:17

I’d much prefer to muzzle some people than most dogs!

BamBamBilla · 13/01/2023 20:18

What good will it do if the dog attacks when at home?

Bloopsie · 13/01/2023 20:18

Yes, I am not afraid of dogs but not a fan of them. Last example, went to feed the ducks with the children- comes along a random dog eats all the bread and owner shouts at the kids not to take the bread off him, then stands around with his hands in his pocket waiting till his dog finiahes eating all the. Bread because he might snap..

geekone · 13/01/2023 20:19

0.001% of deaths in the U.K. are due to dogs. More are due to tumble driers catching fire. Every death due to dog attacks is absolutely awful a terrible tragedy. There needs to be more responsibility placed on bad ownership. There needs to be accountability and a vetting system like a licence again. Dogs however the cart majority 99.9% are lovely and trustworthy and loyal and don’t deserve vitriol because of some bad ones. It’s like locking up all teenagers in London innocent or not due to the bad knife crime

Hoardasurass · 13/01/2023 20:19

Don't be ridiculous. A law that mandates all dogs being on a lead is more reasonable but will still never happen as its to much of an overreaction

Ylvamoon · 13/01/2023 20:20

Why punish many for the crimes of a few?

Chimna · 13/01/2023 20:24

I'm not a dog person but no I don't think that's OK at all. Men are the biggest risk to humans but we don't expect them to walk around in muzzles or blinkers or castrate them. We just need more measures in place to prevent morons adopting them.

You're not meant to feed bread to ducks.

GuyFawkesDay · 13/01/2023 20:26

It's fine to feed bread to ducks 🙄

In fact they asked people round here to stop feeding healthy stuff to the swans as they were starving in winter, they're so reliant on food.

I mean, it's not an ideal diet but seriously z there's bigger things to worry about

FurAndFeathers · 13/01/2023 20:28

Considering the vast majority of dog bites occur on private property in the dogs home or the home of a friend/family member, it doesn’t seem a very effective way of addressing the problem @ToughTalker

Passpass · 13/01/2023 20:28

Yep. It’s not just fatal attacks. Dogs and their irresponsible owners now overwhelm public places and spaces. People and especially children can’t run/play/congregate/eat without being jumped at, chased, scratched, lunged at, bitten, harassed. Enough.

Jumbojem · 13/01/2023 20:29

I'm not a dog fan, and also run a lot in areas frequented by many dog walkers. Even so, i think this would be unfair on most dogs. Most of the ones I meet are friendly and unfortunately just see someone running as a fun person to play with. What i do encounter though is a vast difference in the quality and behaviour of the owners...
Off lead dogs where the owner has no control, or worse no control or care what their dog does, are a problem. But muzzles, no don't agree.

echt · 13/01/2023 20:31

All dogs licensed and on-lead is managed in Australia, so I'm sure it could be done in the UK.

I'm sure there are flouters of these laws, but my own 16-year stay in a massively dog-populated suburb says it can be done.

youshouldnthaveasked · 13/01/2023 20:31

Why not? They muzzled us for a couple of years

bellswithwhistles · 13/01/2023 20:31

Why should my gorgeous Golden Retriever have to wear a muzzle just because some awful people can't control their dogs acquired purposely to be aggressive?!

let's be honest, when was the last time you saw a golden retriever being walked around in a rough area! Or a dangerous dog by a well to do lady?

BCxx · 13/01/2023 20:31

They’d be far better clamping down on all the dodgy breeding and dogs changing hands from people just getting rid of them all the time. Most dogs bite for a reason unfortunately. Far too many inexperienced people are buying these fashionable breeds and it’s ending in tears 😔 I’ve had dogs all my life and none have ever tried to bite so muzzling them outwith our house would just be a waste of time, like banning cars and making everyone cycle everywhere because of a relatively small number of drunk drivers

XenoBitch · 13/01/2023 20:31

Stellaris22 · 13/01/2023 20:25

You're not meant to feed bread to ducks.

Not only that, you often get a kid come running at them and scare them all off. Maybe that kid should be on a leash of some kind.

WetBandits · 13/01/2023 20:32

Nope. My dog has been trained to wear a muzzle in specific circumstances, such as when anyone comes into my home to work, as he is nervous of strangers in his home (nothing has ever happened but I don’t want to take any chances) and for vet trips as again, whilst nothing has ever happened, I don’t want to ever run the risk of him being startled when he is having jabs and snap at the vet. He doesn’t mind the muzzle and behaves normally when he’s got it on.

I wouldn’t want to muzzle him in public and have some other unmuzzled dog off lead come and attack him and him be left utterly defenceless. Also, rightly or wrongly and as unlikely as it is, if someone attacked me whilst I was walking him, he would absolutely defend me, and he couldn’t do that if he was muzzled.

I do think that any dog known to bite or who is likely to fight another dog if given the chance should be always be on lead and, if appropriate, muzzled.

Suzi888 · 13/01/2023 20:32

Humans probably cause the most damage and deaths, yet here we are.

rebecca100 · 13/01/2023 20:33

@ghjklo deed not breed!
Breed specific legislation is outrageous. Are you aware that any breed of dog is capable of biting, even the small ones? I used to work with seized dogs and believe me, they come in all shapes and sizes.
I agree that if necessary a dog should be muzzled, that should be on a case by case basis, not a blanket rule for certain breeds.
