To think all dogs should be muzzled in public?

By law.

Many things have been banned as dangerous where less people have been injured and killed.

Obviously we can’t ban dogs but it should be law to have them muzzled outside of your own property to reduce the injuries and deaths they cause.

I am a dog owner and I don’t agree with this. I do think all dogs should be on leads in public places though.

So they can't catch a ball or be able to open their mouths to pant after a run ? This isn't handmaid's tale

Don't be ridiculous

I don't know... I have seen dogs pick up balls with a muzzle on (by the skin of their teeth). I read about a dog in a muzzle who managed to catch and kill a rabbit.

They used to have such people - Dog Wardens - but a lot of councils can't afford them any more.

On my dog walk today I saw a professional dog walker with 8 dogs. 8 dogs! After the horrific tragedy just days ago. I don't know what the answer is to such stupidity and recklessness.

lifeinthehills · 16/01/2023 22:09

As a dog owner, I have my dogs chipped and registered already. This should be compulsory. Bad dog owners bother me too.

I'd also be happy to see rangers being proactive about misbehaving dogs. Employ more if necessary. Dog off lead in an on lead area? Fine. Dog wandering and not contained to your property? Fine. Unreasonable barking? Fine. Dog causing a nuisance? Fine. Dog somewhere they are banned from? Fine. I'm not saying we can't have some sympathy and give warnings first, but pets need to be managed by owners and maybe that needs incentives.

The cost of dog wardens can be built into registration fees owners pay. Many places do this.

I once tried walking three dogs. It's hard! I can't even imagine how eight would work.

LexMitior · 16/01/2023 22:19

@lifeinthehills - the enforcement is potentially quite easy. And lucrative. £50 quid each time your dog isn't on a lead? Easy.

My local parks have CCTV. Indeed most areas where dog control is a problem too. And people walk their dogs in the same place nearly every day.

It does not have to be police to issue a fixed penalty notice.

I couldn't believe my eyes. I highly doubt the owners realise that their dogs are being walked in this way.

I know someone who regularly walks 10 dogs... they are all her own though.

Dullardmullard · 17/01/2023 09:23

Dog wardens need paying and it was usually your local council. they decided years ago they’d no money for it so paid them off.

doing it through the chip registers mm that won’t work either because who’s paying them too plus a warden. Plus the bad owners don’t chip as they don’t care

fines for shitting and litter even is a hit or miss in all areas because we lack police presence.

plus not to bursts folks bubbles here muzzles don’t stop dog attacks. They have claws and some their own body weight they can still cause a lot of damage and death even with that muzzle on.

lifeinthehills · 17/01/2023 09:25

Dog wardens operate in many places. Maybe looking at overseas councils and how they make it work will help?

Climbles · 17/01/2023 09:30

I used to have to muzzle my last dog as he was very cat aggressive, he even had to wear one in our garden.
He was a rescue greyhound and apparently that’s how they train them. It caused more problems than it solved because he wasn’t able to walk off his anxiety and hated the muzzle with a passion. He just spent the whole time trying to get it off. I imagine it would lead to more dogs killing their owners from pent up frustration.

That's inexcusably reckless. I don't care how experienced you are with animals, or how well you think you know your dogs, there's no way anyone can even keep an eye on 10 dog never mind have effective control of them.

LaylaLjungberg · 26/04/2023 16:05

Most dog attacks reported in the news are at home.

Naunet · 26/04/2023 17:21

I’ll muzzle my dog once men are muzzled/handcuffed in public, seeing as they are a far bigger risk to me statistically. Or are we holding dogs to a higher standard than men?

Naunet · 26/04/2023 17:22

Ugh, and now I see it’s a zombie thread….🧟‍♀️

cobden28 · 30/08/2023 21:41

How would you expect to put a muzzle on a flat-faced dog such as a Pekingese or a pug?

They do exist, but make the dogs look like Hannibal Lector.

samkr · 10/10/2023 20:43

You may think it is an over reaction to muzzle dogs in public but in fact it is a great idea what is more important a child's life or a dangerous dog ( and all dogs are unpredictable no matter the breed) without a muzzle I think this is a no brainier. Lets not forget dogs are pack animals and as such will protect their environment or Pack member(owner) with aggressive behavior from little toy dogs to the largest breed they are in fact animals with animal instincts and we humans try to humanize them for our pleasure and sensitivities

This

I know it's a zombie but what a good comment.
6.7 million people and only 10 or so been killed by dogs.
How many men, cars, cigarettes killed people?

People are irrational it's scary how the news can twist certain people's brain

Poppysmom22 · 11/10/2023 08:31

I won't be muzzling my dog sorry. Because the next time a disgusting man comes towards me with his dick out in a park I want the dog to bite his dick off before he shows it to kids. You are welcome.
