Would you put your MN username on a job application?

A school job application form requests that applicants give all social media usernames, including any pseudonyms and details of any websites they are involved with, for background safeguarding checks.

I understand that they might do a Google search and find publicly available stuff but this feels way too intrusive.

I can’t say that I’d apply for a job there.

errr…no

FlozzaR · 13/01/2023 19:21

I think for a school job it's fair enough as they will be doing extra background checks. I wouldn't do it for any other type of job though

NEmama · 13/01/2023 19:22

Wtf why did would you. It's anonymous

woodhill · 13/01/2023 19:22

No

Anisina · 13/01/2023 19:23

hahahaha No.

Extra background checks would normally involve looking at police databases not AIBU!

100% not

Fraine · 13/01/2023 19:25

I don’t think they mean Mumsnet. Mumsnet is not social media in the true sense of the word.

I wouldn’t give them any usernames for any site, unless it’s LinkedIn or a Twitter account that has my full name.

AutumnScream · 13/01/2023 19:25

No the only way this would be acceptable is if your job is going to be an m15 spy or secret service with highest security clearance needed, otherwise no.

Elphame · 13/01/2023 19:25

Absolutely not. I wouldn't give them any of my social media profiles

XenoBitch · 13/01/2023 19:26

Hell, no.

It’s not entirely clear given that they ask for pseudonyms and websites you are involved in and are specifically looking for dodgy posts.

Would it make a difference to the school’s perception of you as a candidate if your racist rant were posted anonymously on twitter or on MN?

No thanks, I don’t want anyone knowing that the only subReddit I use is AITASims Grin

Poppins2016 · 13/01/2023 19:29

I wouldn't. They might as well be asking to record your private conversations or look at your emails/text messages. This is an anonymous forum where a lot of personal interaction takes place. It's not the same as social media such as twitter or FB which is public and associated with your name.

Glittertwins · 13/01/2023 19:30

Absolutely not

Oblomov22 · 13/01/2023 19:31

Are you for real? You really need to ask?

Yes but someone could be posting about their irresponsible behaviour, drug taking etc. That would b good to know before offering some lunatic a job

backtoyoutom · 13/01/2023 19:32

Fuck no.

lovelilies · 13/01/2023 19:32

Jubaju · 13/01/2023 19:34

Fairislefandango · 13/01/2023 19:34

Interesting point. However people also have private conversations offline that others might take issue with (I'm thinking of acquaintances I know who appear saintly online but have voiced some very questionable views in person, feeling free to do so because it's not recorded). I suppose there's always going to be an element of trust.

MudLady · 13/01/2023 19:36

They're really going to trawl through all the thousands of comments on all applicants' social media feed? Some people have been on MN, Reddit, etc for absolutely years. I'm not doubting that they've asked, just that they're likely to see the volume of posts & give up TBH. Especially if they have a lot of applicants. Seems a ridiculous idea.

TheFearIsNear · 13/01/2023 19:38

I wouldn't put anything like this on a job app. My accounts aren't open anyway so unless they work with mi5 they won't find much. If someone wants to search 10 years of mumsnet posts and see that my husband wasn't putting his clothes in the laundry basket in 2012 they are welcome to.
