Putting this in AIBU because it's inspired by another thread (title). It is not a TAAT so please don't make it one or it will get zapped.

I'll start with it is quite small and relatively easy to get around. My home town is actually partly with the boundary of a National park, and you can go from city to countryside within a bus-ride. The landscape is incredible.

Stoic acceptance of queuing.

Cheese. The King of Cheese comes from England (Wensleydale).

Regional accents! I love that there is such a variety of accents around the UK

Yes!!!

My names misleading I just love eating them, but I am from Lancashire & find it amazing how much accents differ from place to place!

I agree with many things on the list but I am too gloomy about the awful bigger picture stuff in the UK to be fully cheered by the little things like cheese Sad

Cheer up, you can do something about cheese.

RubyTrees · 12/01/2023 20:27

Springtime with woodlands carpeted with bluebells - simply stunning!

HikingforScenery · 12/01/2023 20:28

Amazing scenery

that’s the only positive I can think of now

faffadoodledo · 12/01/2023 20:33

Oh yes public footpaths. I have one across my field and love it that people use it. It's such an ancient thing. You'd get shot in many countries for daring to set foot on someone else's land.

And cheese
And marmite
And marmalade

There are lots of terrific museums and they think really hard these days about different types of visitor.

I went to Jodrell Bank recently and came away not only understanding more about Physics than I ever learnt at school and subsequently, but with a deep respect for how much bloody hard work it must have been to build a huge telescope in a muddy field.

Also they managed to work for the British, the Americans and the Soviets while still somehow staying politically neutral. Imagine that.

I also like how we can pursue classical music or singing to a high level while still being amateurs. Lots of countries have great musicians but I'm sure we have some of the best opportunities for non professionals.

Seasons - the first bulbs after winter, "back to school" weather etc.
Hedgerows
Wildlife - you can't beat spotting* a squirrel, hedgehog, badger, birds on the bird feeder.
London
Theatre, tv, museums, and art galleries.
The humour, both in everyday conversations and comedy in clubs and on tv
The BBC. Yes, many of the programmes are sold to other countries, but the entire channels/ commissioning are a thing of beauty, truly. And ITV and channel 4 too.
Diversity - regional, multi-cultural, accents, local traditions.
Pubs
Rights of way/ walking paths
Universities
History - the good and the bad

I know, we all know, the utter shit, it's lovely to have a moment to list good stuff.

*good job I saw the autocorrect, "shooting".

RightsHoarder · 12/01/2023 20:46

Wild ponies
Weather is never too extreme

TribeD · 12/01/2023 20:49

The fact that when you walk your dog you speak to people who will be henceforth known to you as "Mabel's Mum" or "Buster's Dad"

Buying fruit and veg from the greengrocer. Started during lockdown and carried on, it's a lovely 20 minutes picking it all out.

A decent cuppa.

toocold54 · 12/01/2023 20:58

Pretty low crime rate compared to some countries.
The British humour.
Our wildlife - badgers, foxes, squirrels, hedgehogs etc.
Our freedoms.
Our (most people’s) politeness.

That we have woodland, moorland and oceans all within pretty easy reach from most places.

Who doesn’t love British desserts?! Surely we're the best in the world at that?!

The UK has some of the best dark skies for astronomy and Galloway in Scotland was the first Dark Sky Park in the world. The UK has 442 recognised dark sky sites - 36 in Scotland, 58 in Wales, 8 in Northern Ireland and the rest in England.

EmmaEmerald · 12/01/2023 21:35

So when do we have an MN ghost hunt?
I vote for a country hotel in summer. Somewhere with nice cream teas.

Isn't there a nice hotel near that place where the famous MN goatman was seen at night?

BeatriceBatchelor · 12/01/2023 21:35

Several people on a thread about what foreigners love about living in the UK said the GOV.UK website. They are right - it's a work of genius!

We have beautiful countryside. That’s a really major plus that we don’t always concentrate enough.

We also have fabulous cities. Our capital city is an absolute wonderful place with everything going for it.

We are a naturally very humorous nation. We laugh at ourselves easily.
