Putting this in AIBU because it's inspired by another thread (title). It is not a TAAT so please don't make it one or it will get zapped.

I'll start with it is quite small and relatively easy to get around. My home town is actually partly with the boundary of a National park, and you can go from city to countryside within a bus-ride. The landscape is incredible.

Stoic acceptance of queuing.

Cheese. The King of Cheese comes from England (Wensleydale).

Great list
I'll add -

cream teas
tennis
croquet - did we invent that? Not sure
proper bacon
British gin and vodka
So many ghost stories
Fascinating folklore

so who's up for a night of ghost hunting, wandering the fields in search of strange creatures, drinking gin and/or vodka, - we'll probably need it, given some of the animals folklore features - then having a fry up with Yorkshire tea in the morning? (I suggested something similar before but no one seems keen).

VioletaDelValle · 12/01/2023 19:49

Accents and local dialects - me and DH grew up less than 30miles apart yet we have different accents and use different words for so many every day things.

Local traditions- we have brass bands, morris dancing, rush carts etc and while they might not be everyone's cup of tea I love how they thrive in little villages and local communities.

Scenery- there are some absolutely gorgeous parts of the uk with unrivalled beauty

The history. It's seeps out of our pores. You don't notice it until you go somewhere like Oz which hasn't got it, in the same way, and you miss it deeply.

The humour.

The weather! Bizarrely. It's not extreme, the seasons each bring something lovely.

It's beautiful.

London.

Schooling. I know lots of people have bad experiences, but mine have all been good.

Nhs. Same as above. Only ever good for me and my family.

This is close to my list including art, music and theatre

Our girls can go to school safely, grow up and do whatever job they want.
We are safe from earthquakes, volcanoes, wildfires, hurricanes.
We only have one type of venomous snake and they are few and far between.
A bite from our spiders wont kill us!
We do clean readily available drinking water.
Our healthcare is not dependent on our ability to pay.
We have the freedom to practise whatever religion (or none) we want.
We have the freedom to love who we want without fear of persecution.

Basic rights, I guess, but still not available to many people in the world

All these.

Tryscoredintherugby · 12/01/2023 19:52

The weather is never too hot or cold.

No where on the planet has better mapping than the ordnance survey.

NeedToChangeName · 12/01/2023 19:54

I like the variety of weather, from hot and sunny to snow

And, for all its challenges, free healthcare treatment is an incredible privilege

And free school education for all

You've just described my perfect night away. Campervan parked up in the middle of nowhere, night-time walks with spooky noises around us, good unhealthy breakfast......Perfect!

dolor · 12/01/2023 19:57

England is the wanksock of the UK

Relatively manageable; easy to get around.

Relatively non-violent; no gun culture.

The weather is better than in most places, despite complaining about the weather being our national sport. Mostly not extreme.

Natural disasters are rare.

At least in principle, belief in fair play: from the good old queue to following the rules in sport to the principles of the welfare state, even if these must be fought for.

uhtredbebbanburg · 12/01/2023 20:00

Natural disasters usually won’t kill you in this country. My mum is from an earthquake / tsunami / killer typhoon prone country and I feel safe here.

UWhatNow · 12/01/2023 20:00

British humour.

Dusty crusty old churches.

Pubs.

Multipacks of crisps.

Freedom to moan about everything.

When people come together and go mental on national event days. (And in heatwaves).

Community spirit and acts of kindness.

Regional food.

World class film and tv industry.

Seasonal temperate weather.

A rich history and heritage.

ToWhitToWhoo · 12/01/2023 20:01

And libraries, parks and tea!

faffadoodledo · 12/01/2023 20:02

There's no killer or deadly wildlife.
Cream teas
A good English summer
Our coastline.
Our gardens
Our self depreciation and humour
Free museums and galleries

GyozaGuiting · 12/01/2023 20:02

I’ve lived all over the world and we’re actually a LOT more progressive in terms of racism, feminism and gay rights
The BBC (radio especially)
Watching cricket in my local village on a warm day with a cider
Gorgeous old villages (Cotswolds etc)
The scarecrow competition in my village (how eccentric it is! See also morris dancers)
Long walks and sitting in a pub in front of a fire
We make the best natural world programmes
Just a minute on radio 4 and the shipping forecast
Cheese (I lived in America, need I say more)
Our national sports teams (rugby, cricket, football)
The underground (feels a lot cleaner and safer than almost any other equivalent I’ve been in)
How good public transport is in general
London (just love it!)

echt · 12/01/2023 20:05

MaryMcCarthy · 12/01/2023 09:55

BBC radio. There's nothing like it anywhere else in the world.

They listen to the BBC world service in numerous countries and that's not even the best one! Imagine if they had Radio 4 or 6 Music or something.

if it's not been said, you can get all the BBC radio channels abroad.

I'm in Australia and miss:

Public footpaths
The cruelty and wit of English humour.

maldivemoment · 12/01/2023 20:06

Wonderful thread. Lifted my spirits. Thank you.

Speaking of spirits, I’ll add to the chat; Harris Gin.
Thank you Outer Hebrides.

MistyLuna · 12/01/2023 20:06

Here's what I love about this country:

  • Sunday Roast (nothing beats it! A dish fit for a king!)
  • The weather (no, I'm not being sarcastic! It's moderate, which means you can walk all year round. Much rather have this than continental style climates with extreme seasons where it's -35C in winter and 40C in summer)
  • British spirit of innovation
  • British culture (art, food, music, television, newspapers, BBC)
  • Monty Python
  • Absolutely Fabulous
  • Blackadder
  • Gorgeous countryside and villages (so much choice, all quite different, but all beautiful)
  • Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset, West Country, etc.
  • London (yes, you read right! I love London)
  • Schools & Universities (one of the best education systems in the world)
  • NHS
  • The Legal System (the Rule of Law here is next to none!)
  • British Constitutional Monarchy (best political system IMHO)
  • The Rail (back in the day when it was nationalised, not any more though. But can think of countries where it's worse. Just don't ask where.)

The list goes on, but that's all I can think of at the top of my head.

Riverlee · 12/01/2023 20:08

Generally speaking, we have a lot of freedom and equality in the UK (although not perfect).

British coastlines and countryside

Historical towns. Houses and businesses

MistyLuna · 12/01/2023 20:10

Oh and I forgot to add ... Scones, clotted cream and jam! Yum

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/01/2023 20:10

Regional accents! I love that there is such a variety of accents around the UK

MistyLuna · 12/01/2023 20:16

Marmite!!!
