To wonder if people who like WFH all live in big houses

As per title really.
3 of us who could work at home and DD studying for A Levels.

We have a 4 bedroom house so should be ample for our needs, but the (modern, small) rooms simply weren't designed to accommodate so many separate work spaces as well as space to eat, sleep, relax etc. We're all now choosing to work/study more and more out of the house because of being on top of each other at home.

I really don't know why so many people rave about wfh. I can only assume they must have big houses and therefore don't have to put in place timeshare arrangements for use of the dining table.

I live in a council house and love working from home as it stops me from rushing around so much in the morning with the kids. My husband doesn’t work from home and I don’t use up that much space. Works for me and I’m definitely not in a 4 bed detached.

Cakecakecheese · 11/01/2023 21:41

I love working from home and I don't have a big house but it was just me at home during the day.

starbaby · 11/01/2023 21:42

Love WFH for the zero commute and no office politics! Love Love love it

Oysterbabe · 11/01/2023 21:43

I don't have a big house but I do have a room which is my office and not used for anything else.

Cuppasoupmonster · 11/01/2023 21:43

I think people who loved the lockdowns generally lived in big houses and had a certain lifestyle which meant being cooped up 24/7 wasn’t unpleasant. That or social anxiety.

BettyOBarley · 11/01/2023 21:43

I love WFH but there's only me here doing it (was from the dining table but now have a desk and definitely not a big house). It would drive me mad if there was other family members here trying to do it as well though!!

BooCrew · 11/01/2023 21:44

Nope. Small three bed, but only one child so the box room is free as an office/hobby room, which my partner uses. I'm on the dining table, which I prefer as it's a brighter room. We're both hybrid, so in the office once a week usually.

I'd love a bigger house and more space, but wfh suits so much better even without much space as we would both used to have a long commute.

SwedishEdith · 11/01/2023 21:44

Smaller house than you, no designated office, fit a desk into a bedroom and still prefer to WFH. People's commute is the key to this, I think.

Ponypitter · 11/01/2023 21:44

I wfh and have a small house but so much about it is wonderful. I take dd to school and can amble home rather than racing to office, I can put on a wash in the day, I can wear yoga trousers, I only have to interact with people at set times. It's the dream!

tickychicky · 11/01/2023 21:44

Nope, tiny house but love WFH.

Suziesz · 11/01/2023 21:44

You think the only people who like wfm have a house bigger than 4 bedrooms?? Unlikely given the housing stock of the uk.

2adults and a child in a 2 bed flat, both wfh about 2 days a week. We both love the flexibility it brings to family life and the time saved on commuting.

Yes I agree.

BooCrew · 11/01/2023 21:45

Just to add - I loathed lockdown to the depths of my soul because we had my then one year old at home and we both worked from the dining table so we could both parent him while working. It was actual hell on earth.

MuggleMe · 11/01/2023 21:45

I work out of 1 dd's bedroom and my DH out of the other dd's so not a particularly big house. It wouldn't work if we needed to use communal space.

Same although when ds3 is home from uni we both wfh

I do have a small space downstairs that has a window and just enough room for a chair and desk, as long as you don't want to move or stretch 🤣

chelle0 · 11/01/2023 21:46

I love working from home! We live in a nice house, but not a mansion

SuperHandss · 11/01/2023 21:46

I love it too and would leave if we returned full time to the office.

We have a medium sized home I’d say. 3 bed semi with kitchen extension and there’s only two of us so we have office space in the box and dining space that’s never used for dining 😬

kitcat15 · 11/01/2023 21:46

I just sit on sofa in back room with my laptop and works mobile.....no one else in house at the time bothers me ....when I'm done I shove my laptop.under the sofa and all back to normal

TedMullins · 11/01/2023 21:47

Nope. I live in a tiny one bedroom flat in London and love WFH. It gives me a much better work life balance and more energy when you take away the commute

TimeToFlyNow · 11/01/2023 21:48

Actually the wfh is the reason I went for the job. 11 years at home as a carer, youngest has asd , their dad lives in another country and no regular family support .

multivac · 11/01/2023 21:49

2 up 2 down end of terrace with four adults and a dog living here. I work from a desk under the stairs, and it's heavenly.

QuitMoaning · 11/01/2023 21:49

Small house and a long commute into City means I love hybrid working.
The key bit for me is no children at home anymore and partner works out of home so house to myself.
I was a bit lonely during lockdown so 2 days at office a week is perfect to get my office hit.

Crikeyalmighty · 11/01/2023 21:52

I don't think the ones who love it all have big houses, but there are so many variations on it- length of commute, age of kids and whether pick ups/drop offs involved, whether partner is WFH, state of relationship, whether you used to get a social life from work, for those in shared houses it can be a royal pain in the backside if you don't have a lounge or much space in your bedroom.

UsingChangeofName · 11/01/2023 21:52

I suspect thee is a correlation.
Of course it is easier if you have a dedicated workspace, but if you are in a 4 bed house, it doesn't sound exactly cramped for you.

As pps have said, all sorts of things affect this though, not just the size of your house.
People saving a 90min commute each way are going to like it more than people saving a 10min commute each way. Then it depends on your job too. Also your other commitments in life. All sorts of things to factor in.

youshouldnthaveasked · 11/01/2023 21:52

3 bed house with medium lounge-diner. I WFH one day a week and move the PC from the bedroom to the dining table then back again.

i like the one day at home but would find it hard if it was all of the time.
