To wonder if people who like WFH all live in big houses

As per title really.
3 of us who could work at home and DD studying for A Levels.

We have a 4 bedroom house so should be ample for our needs, but the (modern, small) rooms simply weren't designed to accommodate so many separate work spaces as well as space to eat, sleep, relax etc. We're all now choosing to work/study more and more out of the house because of being on top of each other at home.

I really don't know why so many people rave about wfh. I can only assume they must have big houses and therefore don't have to put in place timeshare arrangements for use of the dining table.

You are probably right. I love WFH, but DH and I each have a separate dedicated office room, and both are well equipped with dual monitors, decent chairs, plenty of space, etc, with a door that can be closed on it all at the end of the day.

I go into the office once or twice per week, but prefer to work at home.

Flapjackquack · 11/01/2023 22:15

Standard 3 bed semi but 1 child so have a spare room I use as an office/guest room.

I LOVE working from home. My commute would only be 30 minutes each way too. I love logging off in the evening and not having to spend time ironing clothes or making a lunch. I can wear comfortable clothes, sleep in later, do some washing at lunch, have a nap. When I go to the office it’s so noisy with forced socialisation I just don’t want. I get very little done in the office and would find a new job if forced to go in.

Fourwallsclosingin · 11/01/2023 22:17

Definitely in our case, DH has his own room with a view, much nicer than going into the office

RandomMess · 11/01/2023 22:17

We have lots of small/single rooms, 2DC have moved out so it works well.

There was already an office (too small to be a bedroom), then I have a vacated single bedroom.

Tiredpigeon · 11/01/2023 22:19

Small 3 bed house, both of us wfh either end of the dining table 3 days a week, but it works for us most of the time.

Unihorn · 11/01/2023 22:19

Today I left the house at 7.30 to work an 8 hour day, and returned at 7.30 because of fucking traffic. When I work from home I walk downstairs, turn on my laptop, work, turn it off. The two days WFH mean I'm not full of stress and rage at a shitty commute.

My husband can't work from home and my children are in school while I work so that's not an issue.

Benjispruce4 · 11/01/2023 22:25

My Dd wfh most days. She uses our now spare room as eldest DD moved out .Both DH and I can’t wfh. I feel sad for DD though as she doesn’t get to mix at work. I do worry for the younger generation that wfh.

Daechwita · 11/01/2023 22:26

I have a two-bed terrace and my desk is next to my bed but I love working from home because I have the house to myself, have the flexibility to do the school run, don't have a commute every day and most crucially, I don't have to wear a bloody bra.

Baconand · 11/01/2023 22:27

We live in a small 3 bed thatched cottage. DH WFH full time permanently (he did pre-Covid, it’s always been remote). He works from a garden office we put in mostly with a proper desk set up (plus huge sofa and Sky TV).

I WFH 2 days per week on average (hybrid role) and I use either the dining table or my bedroom depending on what I’m doing. I use a laptop and portable second screen so easy to put up and down.

I absolutely love it! So peaceful.

DD goes to nursery so she’s not here when we work. We live in an idyllic rural village. My commute is an hour to a revolting city, I would much rather stay at home. Also get to do thinks like laundry while WFH which helps hugely with life balance and walk at lunchtime.

House is very much on the small side though!

Sceptre86 · 11/01/2023 22:27

We have a 4 bed house but it's by no means huge. It's a 12 year old new build. We deliberately chose one with good sized bedrooms. Our children are little but the 5 and 6 year old both have desks in their bedroom. I've stuck to single beds so plenty of floorspace for toys and a desk in my dd1s room. Ds had a mid bunk bed with a desk underneath, it pulls out and can be moved back under the bed when not in use. Sounds more complicated than it is. Dh works from the dining room. Both bigger kids are at school and dd2 (16 months) and I spend most of the day upstairs playing in her room garden and going out to baby groups. Dd2 naps for 2.5 hours on the afternoon. We do play in the living room but if she's crying ill take her upstairs.

Dh loves wfh. He would otherwise have a 90 minute commute. He does pick ups and drop offs. Dd2 is happy to see her dad when he is on his lunchbreak. It works for us.

GrohlOnAPole · 11/01/2023 22:29

We live in a 4 bed 1930s semi. So not massive but not small. DH works in the 4th bedroom/office room. I work on the sofa every day! We both like it.

FunctionalSkills · 11/01/2023 22:32

What does everyone do? I travel to lots of venues so would love to career jump to wfh!

KateisanAngel · 11/01/2023 22:36

We live in a 3 bedroom home and both of us work from home. Its fine. A small flat would be different.

evemillbank · 11/01/2023 22:38

We both work from home. We live in an appt in London. I absolutely love it!

Upwiththelark76 · 11/01/2023 22:39

Personally I love going to work . I socialise and have great colleagues . Also I don’t have to hear the house! makes a difference to bills when the heating is on for a couple of hours only on an evening

Coasterfan · 11/01/2023 22:39

I love working from home, I used to drive 1000 miles a week so it saves me a fortune and i get so much more done without hours of travelling. We have a very average three bedroom house but there is only me here during the day, DH works out of the home and the kids are at school.

Rebel2023 · 11/01/2023 23:00

I live alone so no issues really. 2 bed apartment, my desk is in part of the living room

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 11/01/2023 23:01

There's 2 of us WFH here. We are in a 3 bed council house. 2 bedrooms are big enough for a desk, the third is a box room. Oftentimes we will eat in our rooms, or in the kitchen or living room.

We both love it. It works for us. We get to eat the food in our fridge and there's no commute or waste of fuel. In summer I even get to spend time in our garden which is small but it's mine.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/01/2023 23:01

My best friend has a modest 1 and a half bed flat, much prefers wfh.

Ryin · 11/01/2023 23:02

Love WFH, but got a garage conversion which is my office and no one else at home during the day.

Pinkyxx · 11/01/2023 23:04

I get your point but for some it's a means to an end.. I'm a single Mum who has WFH for last 10+ years, my company is based 3hrs away from where I live. Tiny home. I have a small desk next to my bed where i work. There isn't room for any other furniture bar a small chest of drawers. We don't have a dining room or dining room table! This is only way I can work full time hours, do school runs and manage caring for a child alone. Is it good my mental health, absolutely not. Totally lost any form of social life, or adult contact bar over the phone. Do I have any choice? No.... if I didn't work from home, I'd have to go on benefits as I just wouldn't be able to make ends meet with what I could earn / the cost of rent / childcare etc.

Msstakes · 11/01/2023 23:09

I love working from home for 4 days and I day on site visits etc. I have a hectic social life, and 5 of us and 2 dogs in the house so it's always busy with their friends or neighbours.

DipmeinChoc · 11/01/2023 23:11

When lockdown started, I lived in a small 3 bed with no space for my 2 monitors other than the dining table. Homeschooling my little one was done next to me. It was an utter pain to move all my computer equipment twice a day.

We moved to a bigger house with office space, life is so much easier.

LachrymoseLeeches · 11/01/2023 23:13

I have a small flat with a computer in my bedroom, and a very short commute, but I still prefer wfh most of the time. The rest of my family are out during the day though.

I can do a workout in my lunch break, and a load of washing in the time I save not commuting. I can play my music loudly (when I don't have meetings) and wear joggers. I can also do my job more efficiently without the distractions of being in the office - I like my colleagues and am easily distracted by office chit chat and don't get enough done.

Coffeepot72 · 11/01/2023 23:19

4 bed house with dedicated office. I have a hybrid role, I go into the office 2 days per week, so 3 days at home. I love it, no stupid commute, no morning rush/panic, I can fit in more housework and more exercise so life is just easier.
