This Packaging Is Ridiculous

I ordered some face primer and a box of ibuprofen from Superdrug and they sent in this large box via Evri.

Surely it would have fitted into a Jiffy envelope?

No point in moaning about packaging if people insist of on ordering bitty bitty things they can get as part of a bigger shop.

Also, no point in responding to people when they fail to read what your answer was.

Hmm

Oh well. They could have used a cardboard envelope.

Evri seem to crush most things, one way or another, a padded bag or cardboard envelope would most likely have meant a burst tube.
I have received more damaged packaging from Evri/Hermes than all other companies added together. I now check all round them before accepting delivery.
Best one was a liquid item that had leaked most of the contents just prior to delivery - in the car. Some arrive with footprints and tyre tracks on them. I am always surprised to find the contents intact, credit to the sellers there, they must know what Evri are like.

For those who think everyone can just pop out to the shops, you might be able to, or get your staff to do it, but not everyone is able to.

Quite. Not everyone lives in a city, or even a largish village close to one.

We live in the middle of nowhere.

Surely, @Fraine you do not expect me to do a 120 mile round trip to buy some primer?

Do you do your food shop in the village shop?

midgetastic · 11/01/2023 18:13

The average village shop may still be 20 miles or more away and may have a very limited stock

Where does your OP say you live in the middle of nowhere?

Communionmom · 11/01/2023 18:20

I had a post a few years back where I posted a picture of the box a small mop I ordered from Amazon came in.

BOTH my children (about 2 & 5) fit in the box and the amount of paper padding was about the size of my golden retriever.

Someone attempted to explain the logistics of how the size of box is picked to fit on the truck leaving the Amazon warehouse like Tetris. So there is no wasted space.

It doesn't. I answered your first response to the thread and told you that.

That is bad but surely you could have picked both of those up on your weekly shop, either in store or online?

What was the need to do a separate order for two items that are available in every supermarket.

Maybe OP is disabled and can't leave the house?

TheShellBeach · 11/01/2023 18:30

Fraine · 11/01/2023 18:10

Do you do your food shop in the village shop?

Yes.

They do not sell ibuprofen and codeine or L'Oreal primer.

It's just a little Co-Op, such as you find all over Scotland.

VinoDino · 11/01/2023 18:30

It really doesn't.

TheShellBeach · 11/01/2023 18:31

Actually, @Fraine you just seem to be here to argue with me.
I do not know why.

Would you like me to move nearer to a city, so that I never have to get anything online ever again? I mean, I'll do it gladly, to save you pain.

Yeah I will move with you as I have to travel quite some distance to a very small town. I get most things online.

I worked in the warehouse packing candles etc for Yankee Candles around Xmas a few years back. We had strict targets for fully packed boxes to meet and tbh (a) it was more time consuming to make fiddly little boxes than bigger ones with a load of paper packaging, and (b) if we ran out of the small boxes we would need to go down to the lower floor to physically carry up a stack whereas the big boxes were brought up to our floor by forklift. Also we took turns either packing the boxes or stacking the completed boxes on pallets, and if we were doing the latter we had targets for number of fully stocked pallets that needed to be met rather than total boxes, so it was an unwritten rule to go up a size where possible.

All completely ridiculous and counterintuitive to the reduced waste/greater efficiency targets the company were ostensibly pursuing.

Well, quite.

I have to get quite a lot of things online. The trade-off is living in a remote part of the country where the scenery (and the people) are outstanding.

2 Avon eyeliners. Could have been put in a Jiffy bag (which are now recyclable when you break it down to paper and the bubble sheet tears off easily)

It's L'Oreal.

I don't even know if it's "available in every supermarket" as there are no supermarkets anywhere near where I live.

Anyway, I also got ibuprofen and codeine tablets. I don't use them very often but I thought I might as well, since Superdrug were sending the primer anyway.

If there was a supermarket which delivered to my village, they would not deliver ibuprofen and codeine anyway.

Interesting that some people are saying that Jiffy bags can be recycled and some are saying that they cannot.

This is true. Our nearest supermarket is 10 miles away so all shopping trips are planned in advance, no "nipping to the shops"
No one delivers fast food here. Only takeaway shuts at 7:30pm. No pub (nearest a 4 mile drive).

But we have a lovely view and a good community.

The Amazon delivery man told me it was to reduce theft as previously drivers had been able to predict which parcels were worth stealing. The new boxes mean you could risk losing your job, get a criminal record for fraud for a packet of paracetamol and a cheap lipstick.

Aloezebra · 11/01/2023 18:58

From what I’ve been told of Amazon warehouses, they had a number of boxes of each size in their areas and if they run out they have to go and get more which counts against them (similar to the peeing in bottles debacle). I suspect this is similar in other warehouses so they run out of smaller packaging and grab the next size up! It’s pretty wasteful but I’m not sure what the solution is except promoting better workers rights for warehouse workers!
