To ask what jobs there are for unskilled that aren't retail or hospitality

Just that really, school leaver this year but I'm trying to think of a job unskilled that doesn't involve dealing with customers as I'm really anxious as I have poor social skills.

I don't know what I want to do at college yet but I am looking into that but want to earn in the meantime.
Any ideas please, I don't want voluntary work as I need an income.

Could you look into doing an apprenticeship? You might feel you’re unskilled now but I’m sure there’s something you could work towards :)

Something in admin wouldn’t involve dealing with customers and could lead to being a PA?

Needmorelego · 10/01/2023 22:24

Maybe something like cleaning?
Or factory/warehouse work?

thesandwich · 10/01/2023 22:25

What are you good at/ enjoy? Outdoor stuff- gardening, building? Computer stuff? Coding?

Testina · 10/01/2023 22:27

Packing lines in a factory?

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/01/2023 22:28

Why do you have poor social skills, how does this manifest? Have you looked into ways of developing them? Improvisational comedy, am-dram, plain old coaching? It seems a shame to put yourself on the scrap heap of poorly paid so-called unskilled work when you’re presumably still very young and could explore lot of avenues for improving.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 10/01/2023 22:29

If you are 16 you should be in education or training ie an apprenticeship.
If you search for find an apprenticeship there's a government website and you can search for local opportunities.

Stupidbonfire · 10/01/2023 22:29

I would recommend looking at an nhs apprenticeship. There are so many varied role. Not just nursing. And you could train and work?
what is your school doing to support you?

I know you think you are unskilled, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have the capacity to learn.

good luck

Firsttimeinsnow · 10/01/2023 22:29

Carer you could be a domiciliary one, going to people's houses. You would preferably need to drive. A lot of companies will provide a car.

Krakenes · 10/01/2023 22:30

Apprenticeship in something you like. Factories are good and you can train in steelwork etc. IT is good as once qualified you can do from home.

Noln · 10/01/2023 22:31

Labourer on a building site for a gang of bricklayers. You'll get fit at the same time too😅

declutteringmymind · 10/01/2023 22:32

IT - you can do an online coding course and then work remotely.

IveForgottenAgainFFS · 10/01/2023 22:33

Assuming you're just looking for an income until you go to college then office admin would probably suit. Sign up with an agency.

declutteringmymind · 10/01/2023 22:33

Scrap that sorry. Agree re: previous poster an apprenticeship seems ideal. Try and seek out some careers advice.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 10/01/2023 22:37

@Firsttimeinsnow the OP says she doesn’t want to deal with people. Caring is actually a really skilled job and they need to have really good social and practical skills.

Wakeywake · 10/01/2023 22:38

Care, cleaning, call centre, factory

Needmorelego · 10/01/2023 22:38

@Cantthinkofadifferentname that 'rule' only applies in England and you are actually allowed to work full time. Technically it's meant to be 'along side' a college course but no one follows up or cares if you don't do the college course bit.

My son did animal care at college. Definitely loves animals more than people. Does dog walking and looking after pets when people are on holiday.

Bunnyfuller · 10/01/2023 22:39

Well done for posting. My teenage daughter has crippling anxiety and socially paralysed so I get where you’re coming from.

The first thing - there’s no rush. Most of us aren’t doing what we thought we would.
Second - baby steps. Think of things you enjoy doing, Google them and see what comes up.
Sixth form - maybe not the one attached to your school, a different one, will fell better doing only 3 subjects you like?

what does your family say? Do Mum/Dad etc have any suggestions.

Hugs from a mum of a very talented, intelligent and beautiful girl who just doesn’t know she is yet, like you xx

gingerhamster · 10/01/2023 22:40

You said not retail but not all retail jobs involve dealing with customers. My DS used to do nights stacking supermarket shelves, was able to listen to his music and get on with it!

Leemoe · 10/01/2023 22:41

Refuse operative, hospital porter, kitchen assistant, trainee chef, HCA, cleaner/domestic, factory/production line worker.

gogohmm · 10/01/2023 22:41

If you are 16 you need to either go to college of be doing an apprenticeship. There's websites with lists of available ones

That sounds like a great idea if you like animals.

Mostlygrumpy · 10/01/2023 22:44

Why do I feel like someone's mother has written this. Is this actually you or your Mum looking for advice? Either way I'm sure we can help

NorthernLights5 · 10/01/2023 22:51

I'd love to see those calling care unskilled do a few 12hr care shifts with no break! I hate the term unskilled as all jobs require some form of skill.

In care we are still classed as unskilled and are paid so little. But these days you need NVQs and to have excellent verbal and written communication skills. We certify deaths, apply dressings, sit with forgotten family members whilst they pass away, answer the same question 60 times in an hour with patience every time, be verbally and physically abused (I have scars where I've been in the firing line so to speak), deal with other healthcare professionals, make decisions in people's best interests and a whole load more. Some people have no clue what we do, see or go through.
