To think a smashed wine glass is valuable?

Pepslees · 10/01/2023 22:16

A wine glass fell and two perfect teardrop pieces fell out (please see picture). I think it should be worth something (to someone) but DW thinks it should be thrown away.

I actually saved it from the bin.

We used to but honestly I think you are the only person I know who still buys a newspaper with which to wrap it.

Ah cross posted

tootiredtobother · 10/01/2023 22:29

jeez, that's a cheap glass in the first place. Bin it.

LubaLuca · 10/01/2023 22:29

DamnYerEyes · 10/01/2023 22:26

Keep the photo and bin the glass.

As an aside, do people wrap broken glass in newspaper for safety before binning or is that just me?

Yes, broken glass or pottery gets wrapped in paper before binning. I don't know if that's the right thing to do these days but I can't think of a safer way to dispose of it. I'm sure they get a lot of broken glass through recycling plants, but it doesn't seem a good idea to put it in the glass box for the bin men to handle.

UncleQuentinsWife · 10/01/2023 22:29

It's a strangely small wine glass. Regardless, it's smashed so throw it away.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 10/01/2023 22:30

fill it with water, if the water stays in it’s valuable, if it runs out everywhere in a big mess then it’s effectively waste

In other news. I found my HAND TWIN 😯
I'm gonna be a MILLIONAIRE!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/01/2023 22:30

I'd keep it. It's perfectly serviceable if you drink out of the non-broken side.

Much better then having to drink out of an old milk jug - as I did years ago at a party! 🙄

HelpMeGetThrough · 10/01/2023 22:31

Some sad saps on Bargain Hunt would probably buy that as their "Big Spend". 🤷‍♂️

enjoyingscience · 10/01/2023 22:37

stick the photo on your local Facebook page and charge people a fiver to see it. £10 if you can make out the face of Elvis/Jesus/Liz Truss in it. You’ll have them queueing round the block no doubt.

seriously though, so wrap it in paper when you bin it. I slashed my arm really nastily when I forgot there was a broken glass in mine and squished the bin bag into the bin to make more room. Blood galore.

Thank you for the replies. DW has not stopped laughing at me. It's been a fun Mumsnet debut.

Actually I would stick it on Etsy! I bet some pillock with more money than sense would buy it!

it should be worth something (to someone)

Can you say a bit more about who, and why, OP?!

SpaceBunInstaHun · 11/01/2023 07:40

Ah, I've been looking for a fancy shank, do you accept PayPal?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 11/01/2023 07:44

This is a reverse, isn't it? You're trying to throw it away and your dp is insisting it's worth something.

No because I don't own newspapers. I tie it up in a carrier bag. I always have plenty as even after all these years I hardly ever remember bags when I go shopping Hmm.

Interested in the answer to this also?! 😆

Fairyliz · 11/01/2023 07:56

I volunteer in a charity shop; please note we do not want your old broken crap. So don’t try and fob it off on us. (Yes it happens).

Intrepidescape · 11/01/2023 08:34

What is wrong with you that you’ve taken broken glass from a bin??

What else are you hoarding???

HoppingAndHoping · 11/01/2023 08:38

super cool that it broke that way.

But I do not think it's worth anything. Unless you happen to be an accomplished artist... in that case it might (as part of an installation or similar), I supoose.

That's a point. Are you an artist OP?

IncompleteSenten · 11/01/2023 08:41

In what way valuable?

Money? How much do you think it's worth now?

Or 'valuable' as in some sort of weird woo luck thing?

MischiefTheChicken · 11/01/2023 08:48

@LubaLuca I do put broken glass in our glass recycling container because that’s what the instructions say. Our bin men wear protective gloves like gardening gloves and don’t seem to make much contact with the bin contents so I don’t think it’s dangerous to them (plus if it’s your job to sort old glass you are likely prepared for some of it to be broken)

Bouledeneige · 11/01/2023 13:14

Yeah I love a crunchy glass of wine.
