Been thinking recently about how much we've lost due to the internet, although of course there are lots of amazing things too. For me, I think I miss things like record stores, long conversations on the phone with friends, so many high street shops that are now gone forever, online shopping just isn't the same, especially as you can't try something on, mix tapes, seeing a film in a big cinema, bookshops, lots of independent shops, so much is commercialised now, department stores, in my city, there was only Debenhams and now that's gone, I miss going into town and browsing, there's nothing left other than pound stores, it's so sad.

What do you miss that modern life has robbed you of?

The little body shop soaps in the shape of fruits

Blockbusters, choosing a film

Iced school cake with custard

No social media. Life was easier then for everyone. Nobody to make you feel like shit for having less

takealettermsjones · 09/01/2023 23:04

My 26" waist 😆

MontagueLeo · 09/01/2023 23:07

I miss the sense of optimism that the world was going the right way and that things were generally getting better for people that abounded in the late 90s

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 09/01/2023 23:08

Ice poles.

They hit differently when bought in a shady corner shop and consumed after school.

From my freezer? Urgh, no!

TheLeadbetterLife · 09/01/2023 23:08

Web 1.0.

The internet was so much better 10-15 years ago. There was a sweet spot before algorithms and excessive social media when it was useful and entertaining.

Desiredeffect · 09/01/2023 23:08

Having my parents alive and the feeling of the 80s as a child and the freedoms we had back them

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/01/2023 23:09

Quiet Sundays, big film premiers on (the three 🤣) TV channels at Christmas and seasonal food.

On the whole, though, our life is much more comfortable now.

Absolutely this!

I don't really get missing buying stuff or whatever. But I do miss feeling as if we could make a change. Today I saw an article in the paper saying the hole in the ozone layer was going to be healed in a couple of decades if we can carry on the way we're going. I honestly thought I'd misread it! I'm so used to all news being doom and gloom.

TiddlesTheTiger · 09/01/2023 23:10

Letters, written on paper with pens.

Definitely this!

The Simplicity.

Pollypocket1001 · 09/01/2023 23:13

My old job
The feeling of freedom, not having anyone relying on me
My parents old house
The optimism that the future and being an adult would be fun and exciting

Finally being able to buy the album you’d wanted for ages, or going to the record shop the day your favorite band released a new album.

listening to the charts, and taping the charts, wondering if your new favorite song has made number one.

having instant access to every song you can think of is just not the same.

PlinkPlonkFizz · 09/01/2023 23:16

Excitement about trying new things, flavours, places...
Kiwi cheesecake! Hedgehog flavoured crisps! Drinking a slab of beer with friends and not having any reason to be anything other than hungover the next day.
Your stomach hurting from laughing about stupid stuff with your mates.
TOTP
Smoking - I miss it but not really IYKWIM?
Shopping in town centres at weekends
Everything seemed better 😟

Phoning the speaking clock and Dial a disc. Vinyl album cover art.

middleager · 09/01/2023 23:19

How tidy everywhere seemed
People dressing up more, taking pride in their appearance rather than slobbing around - God, I've gotten old!
No internet/social media/mobiles
Less pressure in general, especially on young women to inject Botox/fillers etc
Quieter roads

Writing and receiving letters.
I found a stash the other day from between me and my friends when we were all early 20s scattered around the country,, hilarious.

My kids now just upload to the "gram"
Sad! Xxx

Annoyingwurringnoise · 09/01/2023 23:22

Sitting in your room for hours, figuring out how to play something on guitar, or your mate showing you how to play something they’d spent hours sitting in their room figuring out. YouTube and guitar tab sites are great, I wish I’d had them when I was learning, but you never quite get the sense of achievement you did when you learnt to play the solo for Sweet Child O Mine by rewinding the tape over and over again.

pleaseletmesleeptonight · 09/01/2023 23:24

Music, artists that were unique.

House Parties with no phones.

Nightclubs with sticky floors.

Saying you'd met somewhere and everyone would turn up.

Beautiful British made sports cars.

So many things.

I watched a documentary this weekend on Sky Arts about the art of the album cover. It was so interesting, how much thought and skill went into them. With things like Spotify, they're sadly a dying art.

No phones. Everyone seemed thinner and healthier. Buying a new album. Listening to the top 40 and it was stuff I knew. Having a McDonald's was a rare treat so it tasted so good. No injected lips and big eyebrows. Women weren't expected to look like the Kardashians.

HarryBlaster · 09/01/2023 23:33

I miss my dad.

Going to Blockbuster’s and picking out a film.

I miss live telly. I really don’t enjoy Netflix and the rest. Most of it’s utter shite.

enjoying the top 40, music videos and Top of the Pops.

Days without internet porn and social media. All this is absolutely destroying society and our children’s feelings of self worth later on.

HarryBlaster · 09/01/2023 23:34

Oh yep and definitely no phones
