Aibu to take kids out of school for a ski hol in March?

Midterm is ridiculous, so expensive. DH has a week off the start of March so thinking of taking them out & going skiing for a week then. It's educational right?

@ragwort there must be some educational value. Lots of schools do week long ski trips? They choose this over a week in say Benodorm or Salou which would be a cheaper option.

will there even be snow?

Amore2 · 08/01/2023 09:29

Ok, have a great time!

ShandaLear · 08/01/2023 09:29

Sure, I want to take my kids to Benidorm for a week in March. That’s educational, right?

Hoppinggreen · 08/01/2023 09:30

Testina · 08/01/2023 02:03

Do it if you want to. But don’t come out with bullshit like it’s educational 🤷🏻‍♀️
Sure, you could point out signs in another language… but this isn’t about education, it’s about money. Do it, but own it.

Exactly. I have occasionally taken the kids out of school for a day or 2 but I’ve never tried to convince either myself or other people that it was educational

creamcoffee · 08/01/2023 09:30

is one in year 6?

Schools go on trips to Alton Towers and Lelgoand, I don't think they try to make out it"s for educational reasons 😀

Like a pp said, own it without being disingenuous

Y7drama · 08/01/2023 09:31

If they’re y6 & y4 I would.

fajitaaaa · 08/01/2023 09:31

Its not educational. I mean at a push it's PE I guess. Just take them out but make sure you make up the missed maths or they will fall behind so quickly.

gogohmm · 08/01/2023 09:31

This is why we skied in Scotland or on a couple occasions Canada at Easter (longer season)

Plannerspannermanners · 08/01/2023 09:32

I would, largely because it was fine for kids to miss so much school during the pandemic. It can’t be compulsory when it suits them!

I agree just own it. You value skiing above a week's school. There's no shame in it so don't bother trying to persuade people it's educational.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 08/01/2023 09:32

I'm all for holidays in term time if it saves money, but don't try and pull the "it's educational" shit - just own the fact that you want a cheap holiday Grin

I used to miss school every year to fly out for holidays or visit family overseas - my parents always wrote to tell the head, who would respond by telling us to have a wonderful time Grin

This was private school though so he didn't have to worry about attendance etc.

Dystopiawarming · 08/01/2023 09:33

I would. Kids catch up when they've been off sick for a week, and there is a lot gained from a ski holiday like physical confidence and family bonding.

PicaK · 08/01/2023 09:33

As long as you don't moan when you get a letter from school stating that it's not authorised (which they have to send) fair enough

BabyFour2023 · 08/01/2023 09:33

I wouldn’t but then I don’t take my DC out. And it’s not educational, you just want to go skiing. Can you go on a cheaper hol you can afford in feb half term or Easter? Feb probably cheaper than Easter.

Reindear · 08/01/2023 09:33

I would. And ok it’s not as educational as school but there’s a lot of learning that can be done when you travel abroad. Language, time differences, plane times. And in your case the physical skills they will be acquiring in ski school. If I didn’t work term time, I would definitely take my young children out in term time.

creamcoffee · 08/01/2023 09:33

yes i remember a mum saying turkey was too hot in auigust so they went in october!
you could have gone to cornwall?

They didn’t though, did they. They did online learning. They weren’t on holiday.

creamcoffee · 08/01/2023 09:34

will there be a fine?

sandycloud · 08/01/2023 09:34

I'm in France now and there has not bern much snow but it's snowing loads now and looks like all week. Come home today typically.

Legoninjago1 · 08/01/2023 09:35

I would - why not. It's only a week. But I wouldn't bother trying to dress it up as educational! Except for sporting development!

mrstnov13 · 08/01/2023 09:36

I would. Book and enjoy.

Fairislefandango · 08/01/2023 09:36

@ragwort there must be some educational value.

Of course there isn't. Certainly not even vaguely enough to justify missing a whole week of school. It's about saving money. Take them if you want, but don't pretend it's educational!

SproutsLCerVEGNoEgg · 08/01/2023 09:36

Murdoch1949 · 08/01/2023 00:44

You'll certainly save money but you'll also give a message to your children that attendance at school is unimportant. Be prepared for that to be thrown back at you when they want to slink off to Glastonbury or something else in years to come.

@Murdoch1949

people drag this out on a regular basis, it's utter nonsense.
