Aibu to take kids out of school for a ski hol in March?

Midterm is ridiculous, so expensive. DH has a week off the start of March so thinking of taking them out & going skiing for a week then. It's educational right?

I would

Lindtcat · 08/01/2023 00:43

How old are they? I would take them out more than likely

Spaghetti201 · 08/01/2023 00:44

I wouldn’t. Things like maths are taught in a linear way, if they miss a weeks worth of tuition they could miss crucial building blocks of learning to progress.

Murdoch1949 · 08/01/2023 00:44

You'll certainly save money but you'll also give a message to your children that attendance at school is unimportant. Be prepared for that to be thrown back at you when they want to slink off to Glastonbury or something else in years to come.

NestingSparrow · 08/01/2023 00:45

As long as you don’t mind them missing things in school and you aren’t expecting the teachers to provide any extra work or time to help them catch up what they have missed.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/01/2023 00:45

I’d be more concerned that as temperatures are now you won’t have snow.

How old are they? Makes a big difference.

9 & 11

They'll be at ski school every day if that makes a difference! I keep arguing with DH that all travel is educational!

We have no resort or country in mind so thinking of flying by the seat of our pants & following the snow reports.

At 9 and 11 I would. Go somewhere high up, we've been March before and it was great

Go for it. School will be there when you get back.

Nurserymumm · 08/01/2023 01:04

Thanks everyone, we just wouldn't be able to afford to take them in term time factoring in ski school, equipment hire & lift passes...

Hope you have a blast. You do realise, the kids will ski rings round you 🤣

You should definitely do it. Wonderful memories for them :)

KenAdams · 08/01/2023 01:42

Year 6? Definitely not.

Desertbarncat · 08/01/2023 01:45

Take them on holiday. They will benefit from the time spent with you, and a week isn’t a big deal. If missing 5 days of school will cause a setback in grades they will never recover from, you have a big problem.

waynesworldpartytimeexcellent · 08/01/2023 01:47

Do it!

stevalnamechanger · 08/01/2023 01:48

I would

Rainbowshit · 08/01/2023 01:52

We have taken our kids out of school every year for a ski holiday. We are not given a proper half term here in Scotland.

The school have always said it will be unapproved but to have fun.

Testina · 08/01/2023 02:03

Do it if you want to. But don’t come out with bullshit like it’s educational 🤷🏻‍♀️
Sure, you could point out signs in another language… but this isn’t about education, it’s about money. Do it, but own it.

Amore2 · 08/01/2023 09:24

As a PP said, check if there’s any snow where you are thinking of going. Lots of the resorts are closed in French alps right now due to temps being too warm for snow. 😔

Also, would you risk being fined for five days (ten sessions)? Would this still be less money with the possible fine than going holiday time?

Ragwort · 08/01/2023 09:26

I agree with Testina - do what you like but it's ridiculous to describe it as 'educational' Hmm.

Nurserymumm · 08/01/2023 09:27

Amore2 It's nearly 4k more to go in half term & the slopes will be rammed

OP posts:
Goawayangryman · 08/01/2023 09:27

I would. It's very easy to catch kids of that age back up, if you're so minded and it's not a holiday most people can afford in school holiday time. Plus it's great fun.

upfucked · 08/01/2023 09:28

yr 6 or yr7?
