My nephew is the same age as my own child, 5. My son watches a bit of TV and likes things like paw patrol (though it's currently "broken" on netflix), but also diggers and unicorns.

My nephew however is apparently big on iron man, batman and some green thing that I can't name - maybe the hulk? This is relevant for gift buying, which is why I enquired.

My aibu is aren't these late teen/grown up films? But looking at clothes in shops there are a lot of superhero things, but I can't really figure out how on the basis of some clothing, all these preschoolers and reception children are mad on these characters.

I'm just wondering if it's going to hit my house too 🤣

My son chooses his own shows on Netflix, he chooses train stuff and dinosaur things, as well as blippi and a programme about cats and several about talking cars

In my experience of having three boys now teenagers, the whole character /film thing is out of sync. So they start by liking dressing up as the superheroes without having seen the films and engaging with the backstories, and playing with the toys. They then move on to the films and video games once they have long grown out of dressing up and playing with toys.

I agree with this. My kids (now grown up) loved dressing up as Superman, Batman etc, when they were small - way before they had seen any of the films etc. I guess it was just that they saw these costumes in the shops, we told them about the characters, and they decided to wear them. This was before the current wave of Marvel films, but I watched a lot of Spiderman, Hulk, Wonderwoman etc when I was growing up.

It would be a very unusual 5 year old now who didn't know about superheroes - they are everywhere! Clothes, stationery, cereal packets, toys, birthday cards, lunchboxes. And that's before you even start on comics, films, cartoons etc. They're bound to be influenced by this, even if they've never watched a minute of it on tv/cinema.

The avengers are a popular thing for kids, and whilst the proper films might be a bit old for some children, there are the Lego versions.

I’ve watched the avengers with my kids. Not all of them but definitely the first. Ds was 5 when he watched it. To us, we felt he was ok to watch it.

He didn’t pay a whole lot attention to be fair, so may have to try again now he’s nearly 8

Yeah he does know who batman and spiderman are.

A lot of people follow the 4 presents rule, which we certainly didn't manage, but are those people smug? YES!

I thought when I was reading your posts ‘she sounds like the sort who doesn’t like plastic toys’ and lo and behold…

@TheFrozenCanal by the way - ignore the person who said you didn't buy your children any 'toys' - puzzles and games ARE toys 🙂

Thanks, that's kind of you :-)

If you don't want your child to be "obsessed" with certain characters, you don't have to feed the obsession. I loathe Peppa Pig, and it made my 3 yo horrible after watching, so we found something else more appropriate on catch-up, and I refused to purchase or passed on any Peppa related toys or clothes. As a reception teacher, I have seen kids whose parents seem unable to say no and buy literally every toy and clothing as though it is a requirement, not an option. We had a group of 5 and 6 year old talking about Avengers Endgame, which shocked me. And it was SO long! I can barely get them to sit through ten minutes of Bluey!

Before dd was born, I was adamant we would have no Peppa Pig in the house. I failed. She became obsessed.

I have a 2 year old. Absolutely no Peppa Pig allowed in this house.

It’s really simple: you just don’t put it on tv or buy the toys.

Soubriquet · 08/01/2023 18:30

I didn’t. My sister did. And once dd had seen it, that was it. Luckily the clothes are cute.

She soon moved on to paw patrol
