My nephew is the same age as my own child, 5. My son watches a bit of TV and likes things like paw patrol (though it's currently "broken" on netflix), but also diggers and unicorns.

My nephew however is apparently big on iron man, batman and some green thing that I can't name - maybe the hulk? This is relevant for gift buying, which is why I enquired.

My aibu is aren't these late teen/grown up films? But looking at clothes in shops there are a lot of superhero things, but I can't really figure out how on the basis of some clothing, all these preschoolers and reception children are mad on these characters.

I'm just wondering if it's going to hit my house too 🤣

Usually kids end up liking these when older siblings or parents are fans.

Notimeforaname · 07/01/2023 22:49

Most 3 year old boys I know love hulk/spiderman etc. Totally normal
.

TheFrozenCanal · 07/01/2023 22:53

Oh yes, it is normal I agree, but I wondered where it's from. He's having his party themed around it so it's a big thing for him, but from what I can understand, hasn't seen the film.

My DD was obsessed with Lego Batman at that age. Spent a lot of time in her Bagillt costume.

TeddyBeans · 07/01/2023 22:54

There's kid versions of basically every comic book hero. DS is 4 and loves Spiderman. He watches Spidey and his amazing friends on Disney+ which has iron man and hulk in it. Maybe your nephew is watching similar

SchrodingersKettle · 07/01/2023 22:54

Kids watc things with older siblings or cousins, and often way ahead of age appropriateness. My ds picked up ideas of Spider-Man and the Hulk at preschool. I don’t believe he knows who Spider-Man. I did spend a few months telling him he couldn’t go round threatening to “smash” everything when copying his friends at preschool.

at primary school dd said the boys seemed to watch everything - Star Wars and Marvel etc even in Reception. By the end of y6 they were watching Squid Game and playing very violent games.

my nephews were the same, but have grown up ok.

DonutsAreNotLunch · 07/01/2023 22:54

My 5 year old has recently moved from paw patrol obsession to Spider-Man/hulk etc. it’s marginally less annoying than bloody know it all Ryder and those pain in the arse pups, so I’m not complaining!

BATGIRL costume

MilkyYay · 07/01/2023 22:56

There are some short tv shows aimed at much younger kids featuring spiderman etc

There are also things like entry level comics etc, an easy spiderman comic was very popular with my 5 year old when reading clicked.

MilkyYay · 07/01/2023 22:58

Oh and parents of other kids in DS reception class took them to watch 12 rated spiderman films in cinemas.

I was surprised but that but it seems to be the norm.

TheFrozenCanal · 07/01/2023 23:03

Ooh I don't think I'd be taking mine to a 12. He doesn't even see PG yet.
Shrek is a PG and uses the word "crap". There are plenty of things to watch that don't so I just stick with those.

Spidey and friends is popular with young dc and features Spider-Man (Peter Parker and Miles Morales) and ghost spider, hulk, black panther, iron man, ms marvel, ant man and wasp as the heroes then you have green goblin (another green guy for gift buying!), doc oc, rhino and a few others. My 3 yo is a big fan! I do prefer it to paw patrol/pj masks dd was obsessed with.

There are also avengers cartoons aimed at pre school/young children and a mass of older cartoons as well as the movies we adults are familiar with.

Plus books, toys, games etc.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 07/01/2023 23:13

I think that nurseries have dressing up/action figures of them which is how they get exposed.

TheFrozenCanal · 07/01/2023 23:20

Ah OK this makes sense, thank you!
I still prefer thomas the tank engine personally. Great peaceful toys (wooden railway) and big excitement to visit a train museum 😀
We don't have disney plus, just netflix.

My 5 year old is obsessed with spiderman having never watched a spiderman cartoon or film. I can only assume he heard about him in creche. Since starting school this year he is all about Minecraft having heard about it from the other kids but having never seen or played the game!

TheFrozenCanal · 07/01/2023 23:25

I'm not sure I'm looking forward to that, liking something only on the basis of what other children said. 😕 maybe he'll influence them and get them all excited about trains diggers and unicorns!

We had the super hero phase hit at around age 5. Mostly batman and spiderman, but also fond of iron man, captain America and I can't remember what else. Watched lego batman on repeat. I recommend teen titans, it is actually quite funny the first hundred times

Now age 7 and we have moved onto pokemon and Minecraft.

I think most 5 year old boys would be starting to grow out of Thomas, diggers and unicorns tbh. That's the age they start to get into more grown up things like football and computer games.

Needmorelego · 08/01/2023 00:29

These characters started life in comic books. That's their origin not films.
There are comics, books, cartoons, toys aimed at younger children and different comics, films etc aimed at older children and even more different ones aimed at adults.
A lot of 5 year old children can be obsessed with a character like Spiderman but they only know him from a cartoon they've seen on TV, their Duplo sets and a My First Reader book.
Being a fan of superheroes doesn't mean watching the films aimed at the older age group.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/01/2023 00:32

Our son loved the idea of Spider-Man aged 3 because nursery had a dressing up costume with built in muscles. He had no idea who the character was though until he was maybe 8 or 9.

dicker · 08/01/2023 00:38

you sound a bit smug

PinkButtercups · 08/01/2023 00:52

My 3 year old loves Spider-Man. He watches Spidey and his amazing friends. He quite likes the Lego versions too.

I don't have a problem with the actual films.

Obviously not Deadpool! Although I do love Deadpool myself.

PinkButtercups · 08/01/2023 00:53

Also forgot to mention DP is into Marvel/DC.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/01/2023 00:56

Does anyone remember Sportacus? Our son was obsessed with him for a year or so and wore his costume (indoors and out) until it was threadbare. It was even more fetching on the days that he wanted to wear the Stephanie wig too 🤣

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 08/01/2023 01:12

Lego movies have Lego batman in.

There's Lego Spiderman

Spidey and friends is on Disney+, I've got a soft spot for that one because my son is now obsessed with Ghost Spider who's a girl. The theme tune is done by Fall Out Boy and is bit of a banger as well tbf 🤣
