When I told someone I had a spell in my finger, it sparked a debate, is the correct term a sprinter or a spell?

It's a skelf in my part of Scotland.

Y7drama · 07/01/2023 18:50

The correct term is splinter but spelk is used regularly. Never heard it referred to as spell.

xyzandabc · 07/01/2023 18:51

Splinter or skelf if you're in Scotland

Never heard of a spell meaning a bit of wood in your finger

JudithHarper · 07/01/2023 18:53

I've always called it a spell.

toomuchlaundry · 07/01/2023 18:54

So for those who don’t call it a splinter, what word do you use when I would say the plank of wood, ice etc has splintered

Passmethecrisps · 07/01/2023 18:54

Spelk or a skelf

Soapboxqueen · 07/01/2023 18:55

A plank of wood splinters. It might leave me with a nasty skelf in my finger.

AFS1 · 07/01/2023 18:56

I never knew it was called anything other than a splinter. This thread is a total revelation!

Spelk where I’m from.

Are you a Geordie? We call them spelks, but I also knew it was a splinter, from a young age.

I've never heard it called a spell.... this place is an education!

whiskypriests.bandcamp.com/track/my-father-worked-on-ships-2

My father worked on ships
They spelked his hands
Dusted his eyes his face his lungs

FictionalCharacter · 07/01/2023 19:06

Depending where you are. I’m from the South of England and it’s a splinter. I heard spelk in the Northeast. Never spell though.
