Spell or splinter

When I told someone I had a spell in my finger, it sparked a debate, is the correct term a sprinter or a spell?

Neither! It's spelk! 🤣

Gatekeeper · 07/01/2023 19:10

traintraveller · 07/01/2023 19:10

It's a skelf in my part of Scotland.

Definitely a skelf

rothbury · 07/01/2023 19:30

Never heard any term other than splinter. South coast here.

Cococomellon · 07/01/2023 19:31

I would say splinter now but remember also saying "spell" at school

Feelallright · 07/01/2023 19:32

Spelk. I know splinter as well but I would say spelk.

Oysterbabe · 07/01/2023 19:34

I say splinter. I've managed to reach 42 without knowing these other terms exist.

Whyisitsososohard · 07/01/2023 19:35

North east here, I'd say spelk. But I obviously know what splinter means. Never heard of spell.

Mine too.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 07/01/2023 19:46

It's a skelf

Oldnproud · 07/01/2023 19:48

It was definitely a spell in the part of Yorkshire where I grew up.

And to dry wretch was to 'gip' - never even heard 'gag' until I was an adult in another county!

GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour · 07/01/2023 19:49

Shelf for me too.
Just as an aside did you know you can remove them with the oral syringes you get with calpol? If you put the hole over the wound where the skelf went in and pull the plunger back the end of the skelf comes out and you can just lift it out with tweezers. It's a total game changer, no more wrestling with needles and screaming wriggly weans 😁

Itshotoutthere · 07/01/2023 20:06

Does "screaming wriggly weans" translate to screaming wriggly children by any chance? 😂

SameToo · 07/01/2023 20:40

@Itshotoutthere yes, wean is wee-ane, little one.

ladywithnomanors · 07/01/2023 20:43

My mum always called them spells

dementedpixie · 07/01/2023 20:43

Skelf (scotland)

CharitySchmarity · 07/01/2023 20:44

I've lived in various parts of England and it's always been a splinter to me.

When I was very little, we learnt basic maths by counting coloured wooden sticks called spills (not spells) - but they would be too big to get stuck in your finger.
