The latest Macmillan charity big event is a hike.

brilliant idea. Inclusive and encouraging being outdoor and getting active

but then they go an ruin it by making a big song and dance in radio adverts and mention in marketing about the glass of bubbly that awaits you at the finishing line.

So… ignoring link between alcohol and cancer; no longer entirely “inclusive” as this “treat” alienates children and those with drinking problems; could possibly even lead to someone trying to avoid alcohol to think “sod it I deserve a drink after that hike” and in no shape or form is alcohol healthy or indeed hydrated you after exercise

sometimes I feel like banging together these charity paid fundraiser marketing teams and just say “THINK FGS”

As a teetotal I would expect freshly squeezes OJ as an alternative to alcohol, not squash 😂

2bazookas · 05/01/2023 14:23

reported.

Saucery · 05/01/2023 14:26

Never mind forcibly administering alcohol at the end, they don’t allow dogs. On a hike. Ridiculous.
Lowther Estates are grabby bastards, so I’d be checking car parking fees carefully if anyone was planning on getting the shuttle bus from there to the start. If you misjudge the length of time you will be walking you will end up paying an absolute fortune.

Itloggedmeoutagain · 05/01/2023 14:26

It's one word.
Right at the end.
No one is going to sign up solely on the basis of that.
Have you got nothing better to do?

On the radio advert on national radio… it’s a big thing. Your treat at the end

It is curious how many people here are triggered about someone wanting to have an event not associated with alcohol.

I bet you’re fun at parties. 🙄 One glass of champagne isn’t going to give you cancer.

Goodgrief82 · 05/01/2023 14:29

I LOVE champagne

Concerning that so many riled by me thinking daft to link a cancer fundraising healthy event with the treat at the end being alcohol

Just don’t drink it? Does everyone have to tread on eggshells around you because you have issues with alcohol?

Fuuuuuckit · 05/01/2023 14:31

Jesus, don't even think about running the London marathon for Macmillan OP - they have a pasta party the night before!

THE CARBS!!!!!!!

Palegreenstars · 05/01/2023 14:31

I’ve done a Macmillan hike - there was alcohol free ‘bubbly’. The most exciting bit was the skittles handed out at about mile 11 - is that allowed? It was such a thoughtfully arranged event and my dad was able to undertake it mid chemo!

I think part of understanding problematic relationships with booze is understanding that rewarding yourself with a drink or two after a challenge is not the same as an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.

Addressing the issue does not mean cancer charities need to remove any relationship with alcohol. Would they need to stop pub quizes, raffle prizes, corporate events? You’re completely missing the point.

People are triggered at an OP being triggered by a free beverage? Nice try turning the tables, but I'm not sure it's applicable.

We had dealings with macmillan “nurses” when dh was dying of cancer. I wouldn’t give them a penny I’d dipped in dog shit.

Or Marie Curie.

Goodgrief82 · 05/01/2023 14:32

I love champagne
I enjoy a glass of wine

I am also the child of an alcoholic

and I can imagine doing this walk with the mother (now deceased) anxious the entire time at the end she was going to sneak in a glass. There will be others.

but it’s a general point at the deftness of promoting alcohol reduction all over your website indeed doing a campaign educating on the link… and then including as a treat!!

Yes, as a treat. You seem to struggle with the implication of that word.

Really? My dad died of aggressive pancreatic cancer and he described the MacMillan nurses as angels. They sat up with him night after night whilst my mum got some much needed respite from the daytime caring.

MN posters newly diagnosed with cancer (or supporting a loved one) often seek help on MN. Macmillan is the charity , support, information source most frequently recommended by experienced MN posters like me.

Macmillan saves lives and sanity. It supports, comforts, advises and supports the time left to those who can't survive their cancer; the dying, the exhausted home carers, the bereaved. The children of dying parents.

I WILL NOT see that charity smeared and demeaned by nonsense like this.

ThreeblackCats · 05/01/2023 14:35

NotAnotherBathBomb · 05/01/2023 14:35

Are you the one who complained about alcohol at a school fete? Or are there more of you?

whereaw · 05/01/2023 14:36

I agree. And I love bubbly!
I think from a marketing perspective it's jarring.

I would think it's the last thing on people's minds who might sign up - new year new me, doing something positive for myself and charity, trying different things, shedding the Christmas weight, dry Jan etc.

I don't think anything would be missing by NOT having it in the marketing comms.
As someone who (loves!) champagne, it's not what would inspire or motivate me to sign up

MajorCarolDanvers · 05/01/2023 14:36

Charities can't win

Yesthatismychildsigh · 05/01/2023 14:36

Bits also quite patronising. ‘Oo all women like bubbles, let’s give them bubbles’.
