To despair at charity fundraiser organisers (macmillan in this case)

The latest Macmillan charity big event is a hike.

brilliant idea. Inclusive and encouraging being outdoor and getting active

but then they go an ruin it by making a big song and dance in radio adverts and mention in marketing about the glass of bubbly that awaits you at the finishing line.

So… ignoring link between alcohol and cancer; no longer entirely “inclusive” as this “treat” alienates children and those with drinking problems; could possibly even lead to someone trying to avoid alcohol to think “sod it I deserve a drink after that hike” and in no shape or form is alcohol healthy or indeed hydrated you after exercise

sometimes I feel like banging together these charity paid fundraiser marketing teams and just say “THINK FGS”

Also, it doesn't 'alienate' kids - kids know (or should know!) that alcohol is just for grownups and won't give a shit that they can't have a glass themselves. Maybe there might be a packet of sweets or something for them instead, or is that bad too?

But, but the sugar...

Don’t you think that something like bringing on board a mineral water supplier?
or bring on a muesli bar manufacturer
or even just an apple

but alcohol? Just no need

muesli bar manufacturer * *full of sugar? only marginally better if at all than a small glass of bubbly

Children don't need to be offered sweets at times like these imo. Finishing the hike is a reward in itself.

I think (could be wrong?) that many parents actively try to not associate junk food with "reward" in their children's mind. However it's a tough battle when schools and other types of establishments do it so often.

I would be curious if the charity is planning anything like that for the kids.

faffadoodledo · 05/01/2023 13:54

I did one of these things for Alzheimer's UK. There was (cheap) fizz or orange juice at the end. I chose the latter because tbh a glass of fizz was the very last thing my knackered body wanted!!

Goodgrief82 · 05/01/2023 13:55

Added to which

no doubt the bubble served in plastic cups

So don't go out of protest. I'm sure they will be gutted.

TofuonToast · 05/01/2023 13:55

I agree op. But then I’m also irritated by kids given sweets after sports clubs etc and have found most people aren’t. I think things like this are well intentioned but stupid.

Goodgrief82 · 05/01/2023 13:58

Macmillan actually did a huge campaign about

Drink Less Alcohol

From the macmillan website

Alcohol is linked with an increased risk of some cancers.

marketing department. “I know perfect treat to await hikers at the finish line… a glass of bubbly! So in keeping with our advice”

Yes, a treat. Humans can still be healthy and have them occasionally.

Starting to assume this is a wind-up thread.

LadyFlumpalot · 05/01/2023 14:02

I've done one of these hikes and my children joined me to cross the line. I don't drink alcohol, they asked me what I would like out of a selection of tea, coffee, water, juice, soft drinks and champagne. They offered my children soft drinks. It's just a traditional way to finish up a physically challenging event.

I agree with you and it's so disheartening that so many adults are happy to ply other people's children with harmful substances. Giving junk food to other people's children should be stigmatised in the same way it's frowned upon to yell at someone's child.

pikantna · 05/01/2023 14:03

I should think most people would understand that drinking the alcohol isn't a compulsory part of the event and if they really wanted to do it would go ahead.

Most things are linked with an increased risk of cancer if you eat / drink / inhale / do it often enough...

ShandaLear · 05/01/2023 14:05

I don’t think it’s compulsory, and I don’t think anyone is going to get cancer from half a glass of warm Prosecco. Are you ok?

There is literally a picture of an apple next to the wording "pit stops with snacks and drinks" in your link OP.

This^
life is about moderation isn’t it.
I don’t drink a lot but I’d happily have some bubbly at a birthday party, just as I have chocolates at Christmas etc.

DreamingofGinoclock · 05/01/2023 14:08

I clicked on the link thinking the bubbly would be presented as the main selling point and emphasis put on it ...in which case it would be unreasonable. However it's one line at the bottom of the web page. There is also free food mentioned. Bubby I should imagine is a catch all for the refreshments at end which is likely to include non alcoholic alternative.

If you do not like champagne don't drink it
#I am doing it and I will be delighted to have a glass of champagne after

Lilgamesh2 · 05/01/2023 14:11

@Whowhatwherewhenwhynow I agree with you, in concept, but I suspect you are in a very tiny minority if you only allow yourself champagne at birthdays and some chocolates at Christmas. To most people you are leading a life of deprivation!

YANBU. As a teetotal person, it did make me roll my eyes. And on the front page is a picture of 3 Asian people, statistically at least one of those people will be teetotal.

Squeezita · 05/01/2023 14:12

Not sure why I quoted the OP Blush

NewYearNewName2023 · 05/01/2023 14:17

Well they aren't going to hold people down and force it into them. I think you are being very OTT

anotherdayanotheralias · 05/01/2023 14:19

Bubbly? Do they mean Prosecco because I for one am sick and tired of that 'fun girly' drink and its over-hyped ubiquity! And on that basis alone I'm out....😄
