To ask for help with DD school tie?

Sorry, first world problem I know. I told DD that I used to do my tie at school so that the top button could be left undone but it didn't look too obvious so wouldn't get told off, and that I'd show her how to do it so she can do the same since she doesn't do her button up but constantly gets into trouble. It's not a chavvy fat knot, it looks quite smart but I can't remember how to tie it or what it's called. Bit of a long shot but any ideas? It's quite a large knot but has a smart appearance.

Buy a bigger shirt so the top button can be done up but it isn’t tight much easier

Givenupgivingashit · 02/01/2023 20:58

It'll be too big all over then though

Did you mean a four-in-hand knot? Also called a 'schoolboy knot'?

Givenupgivingashit · 02/01/2023 21:00

Plus she's got 6 all in the same size already!

The “fat triangle” knot you’re thinking of is the Windsor knot. But unless you’re an admiral or something it just doesn’t look appropriate for school uniform in my opinion and looks weird

The four in hand is the best knot I think, for all school purposes. But it won’t hide this top button stuff.

I don't know what it's called. I just remember my dad showing me, then I used to leave it tied and just unloop it

Perhaps a full Windsor? You need to Google them and watch a video of how to tie them.

Yes it was a triangle, I'll have a look. Thank you!

A other thought is to snip off the top button then reattach it using elastic thread so it doesn't feel so tight but is still fastened.

RunnerBum · 02/01/2023 21:05

Why doesn’t she just do the button up? If the tie is pulled so tight that you can’t see the button then it wouldn’t be any tighter to just do the button.

Misses the point of the thread

Comefromaway · 02/01/2023 21:06

I remember when ties were introduced in my school the very proper maths teacher taught us all how to do a Windsor knot so I always thought that was the posh way to tie a tie.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 02/01/2023 21:08

Too late for this year, but next time you buy shirts, DS has his school shirts a size (or probably 2) bigger than he needs, but slim fit.
So the collar is loose, but the body isn't too gigantic.

And what is a 'chavvy fat knot', pray tell?

ILoveeCakes · 02/01/2023 21:09

Or you could teach her the value of personal discipline and having pride in one's appearance?

Like that worn by Catherine Tate or Grange Hill characters, with a stupidly short fat bit sticking out

She has both of those values thanks - she just doesn't find having her top button done up very comfortable (nor did I), hence trying to find a way to be comfortable and as smart as possible at the same time.

"Chavvy" fat knots were the fashion for my kids when they were at school 🤷🏼‍♀️ I don't understand what is chavvy about it?

Testina · 02/01/2023 22:24

I’m only here for “chavvy fat knot” 🍿🤣

She would get pulled up for it instantly at her school, hence not wanting one of those

OP posts:
bestchristmasever · 02/01/2023 22:25

What's chavvy about it though? It's just a particular fashion.

bestchristmasever · 02/01/2023 22:26

(Mine got pulled up for it to, but it was the fashion so they did it anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️)

bestchristmasever · 02/01/2023 22:26

*too

Zombiemum1946 · 02/01/2023 22:28

A Windsor knot for the tie this year but next year Larger size in a slim fit shirt. As another pp suggested, an elasticated loop to keep the shirt in place, without placing pressure on dd neck.

I remember the girls from school who were like you

evemillbank · 02/01/2023 22:31

I can't believe people are not familiar with the chavvy fat knot Confused I've noticed on my day off that a lot of estate agents on homes under the hammer still like it
