Should we be concerned about this? It all seems very "Hunger Games", or is it a good thing? Would like to hear opinions. I don't normally like KH but she does seem to have a point.

What's it about? I don't click on random links.

Oxborn · 02/01/2023 15:32

Climate lockdowns

Greensleevevssnotnose · 02/01/2023 15:34

Seeing as she's a conspiracy theorist and mad as a box of frogs I doubt it is true or worth worrying about. But I don't click random links.

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 02/01/2023 15:34

i don’t really understand the plan.
is it for cars and public transport, so they’re getting people to go around the city, rather than through. Or does it apply to people walking too?

is it like an extended/enforced version of a bypass?

crossstitchingnana · 02/01/2023 15:35

This has been shown to be blown out of proportion. The council were proposing some sort of green incentive, whereby cars would be encouraged to be used in a certain way.

Some idiot thought it was some sort of lockdown and it went viral.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/01/2023 15:36

If this is accurately described by Hopkins, then it defies a lot of common sense.

When has Hopkins ever accurately described anything though?

FourTeaFallOut · 02/01/2023 15:39

Well, quite, hence the caveat.

Well a clock always tells the correct time twice a day? 😀

I live in Oxford. It's a pain in the arse (If you need to use a car as I do) but not quite as dramatic as they are making it out to be.

Letitrainletitrainletitrain · 02/01/2023 15:41

It's the 15 minute city idea

The basic concept is that everything you need, shops, schools, doctors and green spaces is within 15 minutes walk.

It's just a different way of city planning, making it less focused on the car and bring in groups that can often be neglected during planning such as disabled and elderly people and children.

It's because parts of Oxford have schools and shops and parts don't, so its improving amenities in the parts that don't. Then to improve safety for walkers and cylists there may be some occasions where people have to go on a bypass instead of driving through the city at certain times of the day

There won't be electronic gates and people trapped within zones or anything else KH was droning on about.

TarasHarp55 · 02/01/2023 15:43

Regardless of it being KH talking about it, it IS happening. I find it quite dystopian and a possible sign of things to come. More control over the people.

Imagine it all combined with a cashless society and the possible consequence of breaking the rules. So easy then to just deprive you of spending?

sst1234 · 02/01/2023 15:44

If it’s stupid to believe conspiracy theories, it’s equally stupid to write off everything because someone says it’s a conspiracy theory.

What’s happening in Oxford is indeed a dangerous thing for the average Joe. Not being able to drive through X area to go to Y means goin around that neighbourhood to get to your destination. As ever, if this nonsense is for people who have no constraints on time or resources. For ordinary people wanting to go about their lives, when the cost or inconvenience becomes too much, you just stop doing it. It is a hysterical overreaction that will basically exclude more low income people from more things in life. Almost every restriction works this way.

Yet, Turkeys will always vote for Xmas.

FromTheFront2theBack · 02/01/2023 15:45

If you genuinely want to educate yourself and form an opinion look for a source more reliable than Katie Hopkins. Actually that sets the bar too low (asking my 3 year old niece would be more reliable and she told me she saw a flying frog down the back of the garden).

Headoutofplace · 02/01/2023 15:45

I think it's something that should have been planned for decades ago, instead of going down the route of masses of housing without any services nearby, so it's going to feel really rough suddenly going into it now but in the long term I think it's a brilliant idea. Nobody (unless they're very rural) should be living in a neighborhood where you HAVE to use a car just to get to the doctors/nearest school/basic shop, it's ridiculous.

Sounds nice in principle, right?

Except it isn’t. When you please restriction on where people can shop and spend their money, guess what happens, things become more expensive as people no longer have a choice. Except for those that can afford it. The plebs will have to pay more in their local shops while the gentry can drive wherever they like.

helloisitmeyourelookingfor · 02/01/2023 15:50

Driving in Oxford city centre is horrific

If it's the same area as the clean air zone then it's a pretty small area anyway

They aren't restricting those things though. Public transport will still be avaliable across the city.

You're describing what happens now because of the gentry being able to drive through towns/cities to get to cheaper shops/facilities when those on lower incomes can't, especially when public transport is awful in their area. The 'haves' can go to an out of town Asda when the 'have nots' have to pay through the nose at their local Spar etc. If the zoning is done right (debatable I agree!) it should improve the situation because every area should have more facilities & shops rather than these being as clustered as they are now (though the out of town shops are not going to be affected I'm sure).

Daftasabroom · 02/01/2023 15:52

Another vote for it being a great idea.

@sst1234 you're going to have to choose between your convenience and the lives of the 40,000 people a year who die from diseases related to particulate emissions.

Thedaysthatremain · 02/01/2023 15:52

As long as they make public transport affordable, acsseable, and reliable i think this is a great idea.

User1785498 · 02/01/2023 15:55

Weren't they doing this somewhere else as well only on a smaller scale, I'm sure I see something about it a month or two ago

WinterFoxes · 02/01/2023 16:02

The language she is using is so misleading and emotive. She keeps saying you're not allowed into other zones in the city. Of course you are - on foot, bike, public transport, and twice a week by car or as oftren as you like by using ring roads to keep pollution and congestion out of the city centre.

What the zoning is designed to do is to encourage people not to use cars for short journeys, and to provide good enough local services so people don't have to travel by car a long way just to buy food or go to the GP.

I don't disagree with her that the info hoovering should be curbed. But the rest -she's talking nonsense. She's doing what she accuses the city councils of doing - obfuscating the truth with big false statements. " You can't leave the zone. Even though there are numerous ways you can leave the zone whenever you want. Just don't take the car on short journeys all the time.
