Should we be concerned about this? It all seems very "Hunger Games", or is it a good thing? Would like to hear opinions. I don't normally like KH but she does seem to have a point.

I think this is terrifying tbh!

Apart from the other city mentioned, is this happening anywhere else either UK or the world?

It's a terrible idea. I can't believe some people are for it. It is restricting your freedom of movement and very Chinaesque.

Except it isn't. You can still walk cycle or use public transport to access any area you like. The only thing that's limited is car use.

What is it that’s actually terrifying you?

StillMedusa · 02/01/2023 17:08

I live outside of the city centre, and while I used to go there regularly for shows and shops and museum visits, I don't any more.
I understand the need to try and cut the traffic, but where I am, they have just also halved the bus service to and from the city centre, so can't drive in and can't rely on a bus (let alone late at night). Last time I tried to use Park and Ride was last Xmas (not this one just gone) and having parked up, we waited and waited and waited for a bus... each one was full and after nearly an hour in the cold with a baby, we finally got on.
Now if I want to see a show, I go to Cheltenham, and I shop in Witney or just don't bother. I also have a 'getting old but not got a blue badge' Mum and son with special needs...ditto. Neither of whom could easily 'just walk' to the next zone.
I think it will kill Oxford trade.

EllieQ · 02/01/2023 17:09

BBC article about how news about the proposals spread and was being described as a ‘climate lockdown’

BBC- Oxford Traffic Controversy

I think Katie Hopkins would count as one of the ‘fringe news’ sites they mention!

PermanentTemporary · 02/01/2023 17:04

Right @Butchyrestingface would you like to give some details on Franco's scheme that was similar? Are you concerned that the gwzd if Oxfordshire County Council has plans for a national military coup?

It was a joke, Nippy Face. Not sure what the "gwzd" is though and Google is drawing a blank.

Nousernamesleftatall · 02/01/2023 17:12

Why should I get public transport if not convenient? My children have activities and places they need to be where we don't have time for public transport. I pay for my car, income and road tax, how dare any government fine me for using my (electric) car as before.

BradfordGirl · 02/01/2023 17:15

AreOttersJustWetCats · 02/01/2023 17:06

That is disingenuous, it is limiting movement. It will mean for everyone who is not fit and able to walk quickly or cycle that journeys will be more limited. You may be able to walk one very local journey in a day and that is all.

BradfordGirl · 02/01/2023 17:18

I am not in Oxford. I hated when retail parks came in and always used to make a trip into town to buy things. Now they have made it so hard to get into town that I go to retail parks.
Oxford will still get tourists and it has lots of students, but I predict it will find it harder and harder to attract people to do all the service jobs the City needs.

WisherWood · 02/01/2023 17:18

Well a clock always tells the correct time twice a day?

I think the expression you're looking for is 'even a stopped clock is right twice a day'. A moving clock could be wrong the entire time, much like Katie Hopkins.

Nousernamesleftatall · 02/01/2023 17:18

Yes they are trialling it in many Western countries and plan to expand it everywhere. People are so used to being restricted now they accept it, the slow CCP style creep.

Nancydrawn · 02/01/2023 17:18

Why the fuck are you watching Katie Hopkins' Facebook videos? No wonder you're worried about the world.

BradfordGirl · 02/01/2023 17:21

I do not find this terrifying, that is hyperbole. But if this spreads to other cities it will be the last death knoll of most city centres. And no they will not largely go to local shops, people will order from the internet or go to retail parks instead.
Oxford city centre will be better than most because of the large student population who will continue to use the city centre.

Nolosomi · 02/01/2023 17:22

It’s a tricky one as there are a lot of private schools in north Oxford and the traffic because of parents taking children in and out is pretty bad - I’m not sure how they will cope but roads are a lot clearer during the holidays.. I’d welcome that - it’ll be interesting to see if these cars are allowed to come in or not. Buses here are expensive, it’s £4.20 for a return into the centre from where I live (not far but too far to walk) which will definitely mean I won’t go into the centre as much unless I cycle which I’m hoping to do more of as I need to budget anyway. There’s absolutely no way the council are trying to restrict people from movement, that’s just bobbins, but they do need to make buses cheaper… it’s restrictively expensive.

Seeing as she's a conspiracy theorist and mad as a box of frogs I doubt it is true or worth worrying about. But I don't click random links.

I think that's really unfair ...

on frogs!

It's true. DSis lives in Oxford and was telling me about it over Christmas. Apparently the people of Oxford are aghast.

You must live very near me, I do all my shopping in Witney now as well!

It just came up on my feed. I don't like her but regardless of her views on it a quick Google told me it was happening. Can we ignore her views and talk about the subject?

Seems to tie in with long term planning to do away with town centers full of shops. How sad.

Witney is a decent size town, would be lovely to see it benefit and thrive if people move to shopping there. There is an M&S and a Waitrose!

Wallstick · 02/01/2023 17:30

Sounds a bit like our LTNs, which are a nightmare. I think it's better to share the pollution rather than eradicate it from one area and concentrate it in another. In this example the ring road will be gridlock, so anyone living near that will suffer, their house loses value. Meanwhile people in the area get richer and healthier. Only rich will be able to move inside the boundary, eventually making a little island of money among a sea of poverty.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 02/01/2023 17:30

Thedaysthatremain · 02/01/2023 15:51

They aren't restricting those things though. Public transport will still be avaliable across the city.

In tandem with this, the bus service into the city has been practically halved from the West. So it’s not true that public transport will provide access. Three years ago there was a bus into the centre from where I live every fifteen minutes 6.30 - 19.00. Now it’s every half hour and stops earlier. Don’t even bother at weekends.

I don’t know why the council want to kill Oxford as a shopping centre, but they do. They even put illuminated signs saying tThat the car parks in the centre are full when they are not. The roads are being narrowed for cycle lanes, but who can do their shopping for a family on a bike?

EmmaEmerald · 02/01/2023 17:31

Leave aside KH and look at the Oxford official info on it.

some approve, some don't.

interestingly, every time Oxford issue a "clarification" I think "yes, we heard you the first time and you need to accept that a lot of people are deeply pissed off and/or alarmed by it".

why they think different language will change people's feelings is beyond me.

Mydogatemypurse · 02/01/2023 17:31

FourTeaFallOut · 02/01/2023 15:36

If this is accurately described by Hopkins, then it defies a lot of common sense.

Its not accurate at all. She's a scaremongering knobhead.
Its a similar proposal to the use of bus lanes where you are fined if you drive on them.
These rds in Oxfordshire are imposing a reduction in access for all but public transports, sick and disabled and key workers. Its to reduce congestion and pollution in identified hot spots. You get fined for using them unless exempt.

That's essentially the plan.
