DD7 was diagnosed with strep A at the hospital on Boxing Day and prescribed antibiotics. A few days later DD5 became unwell (fever, sunken eyes, weakness etc). My first thought was strep A and the Dr prescribed amoxicillin to be on the safe side. She didn’t have a rash (older DD did) but had other symptoms. I did mention to the doctor she also has an awful chesty cough and is sneezing a lot which aren’t symptoms of strep but nevertheless we were prescribed with antibiotics.

On day 4 of antibiotics now and I’m concerned about the trajectory of her recovery. She doesn’t seem to be getting any better. Still very weak/fever on and off etc. The cough is awful and I’m worried she has flu/bronchitis in which case antibiotics will do nothing and I’ve read the if it is flu can actually make symptoms worse and cause serious complications :(

Drs are shut today and I’m considering calling 111, just don’t fancy sitting in a&e for 6 hours when DD is so poorly unless it’s absolutely necessary.

I’m happy to continue with the antibiotics but can anyone advise if this could be dangerous if it’s not strep? That’s my only concern. Any advice from someone with knowledge would be much appreciated!

Don’t consider. Just call. This website is not a diagnostic tool.

janeeyreair · 02/01/2023 07:37

Can you do a private video consult with a GP?

Blueyismylife · 02/01/2023 07:38

'Any advice from someone with knowledge would be much appreciated!'
Call 111.

KangarooKenny · 02/01/2023 07:40

Just call 111 or fill in the on line form.
Is she keeping down fluids, weeing, and eating small amounts ? Are you ggiving regular paracetamol and ibuprofen ?

savvy7 · 02/01/2023 07:40

Please just call an ambulance. Even if they don't come they may send a doctor who can then determine whether an ambulance is required.

KangarooKenny · 02/01/2023 07:41

And do make sure she finishes the antibiotics.

Eh?

Cats23 · 02/01/2023 07:44

Dont call an ambulance as PP said- Ridiculous statement!

Call 111.

Terrible terrible advice. Have you not seen the state of the ambulance service currently?
op has a medical question, not a need for an ambulance.

op, I would ring 111, they are best to advise.

KangarooKenny · 02/01/2023 07:46

I agree, do not call an ambulance. 🙄

sepsisandAKI · 02/01/2023 07:48

Have you got an urgent treatment centre? You can just turn up there no appt needed and get seen quicker than waiting for 111.

Tilllly · 02/01/2023 07:52

Agree with UTC if you have one

If not, 111

No need for an ambulance unless she's struggling to breathe

Deep breaths for you! I know it's alarming but there are a lot of viruses about right now, try not to panic x

OutDamnedSpot · 02/01/2023 07:55

Call 111. It’s literally what the number is for.

I hope she improves soon.

GinoVino · 02/01/2023 07:56

YABU. Call 111.

keeprunning55 · 02/01/2023 07:59

Don’t stop the antibiotics whatever you do. They’re not going to make her worse.
Get her checked for what’s wrong as well-out of hours.

Holly60 · 02/01/2023 08:01

Call 111.

Notsurewhattoreplyandsay · 02/01/2023 08:02

Don't call 111 use the 111 online service. Much quicker callback and easier to use.

KangarooKenny · 02/01/2023 08:03

And my DS was recently given amoxicillin with a diagnosis of bronchitis, so I hope that reassures you.

I would have normally agreed with you, however I have direct experience of this. 111 is absolutely useless and the GPs are not open. By ringing 999 OP may get an out of hours doctors appointment. The doctor then can determine if hospital is required.

Clearly very limited experience because this is terrible advice. 111 can easily arrange OOH GP appointments and calling 999 doesn't speed this up, just makes you seem like a knob.

VanCleefArpels · 02/01/2023 08:35

Could be a virus hence antibiotics not working - there is a horrible Covid like illness going round at the moment with symptoms v like those you have described (and also Covid obvs). I echo all others to call 111 and do what they say

SassyPants87 · 02/01/2023 08:38

The problem with 111 at the moment is they are also under resourced. It took me over an hour to be put through the someone the other day!
OP is sounds like it might be RSV, how is her breathing? Is she sucking in quite hard under her ribs? If so I would take her straight to hospital. If not then try and persevere with 111 and make sure she has plenty of fluids. RSV peaks between day 3 and 5 but does get better after

midnightfirework · 02/01/2023 08:38

No one here can diagnose your child. And even if they could claim to you have zero idea who they really are. Call 111.

You're very rude.

Anyway, OP, please do not take any chances with your DD as she is quite young. There is serious flu around at the moment which can develop into pneumonia. The hospitals are full of people with respiratory illnesses.

PinkDaffodil2 · 02/01/2023 08:39

Don’t stop the antibiotics - they won’t be making anything worse. Also don’t call 999 unless you’re so worried about her breathing in which case you may be safer driving her to A&E yourself depending on how bad things are in your area.
You says she’s not getting any better, but is she getting worse? Viral illnesses can be rough for a week or so, but if any worries about her getting dehydrated, difficulty breathing, more poorly in general I’d go via 111 or a local walk in centre for advice.
