Anyone awake?? DD9 to be worried - sickness

87SPD · 02/01/2023 02:43

Hi there,

We went to New York on Boxing Day and my DD9 was very tired and pale looking throughout the trip, then literally as we were boarding our flight home she got a massive nose bleed and a bad headache, the nosebleed lasted for at least half an hour and drew the attention of the crew to assist her with tissues and water etc. I filled an entire shopping bag with blood soaked tissues. Anyway it eventually stopped and she slept for most of the flight. That night she woke being violently sick, physically shivering and generally unwell like a nasty sickness bug. My DH is currently up now with the same sickness symptoms so I know it’s a bug.

My DD9 has just woke up with another massive nose bleed and headache and looks extremely pale. She was crying and saying her throat really hurts her and she has stomach ache again too.

Do you think this is all one big nasty bug? I’m concerned with the nose bleeds and how weak she has been feeling, the sickness, although quite extreme has worn off now. She is quite warm to touch but saying she is cold and doesn’t seem burning up but she is very pale.

Any advice would be appreciated from anyone still awake! Just in bed with her now and give her some calpol for the sore throat.

Not sure if I’m overtired and irrational but I am starting to worry.

TIA

call 111?

monsteramunch · 02/01/2023 02:49

Definitely call 111, it's what the service is there for.

Sorry you're having such a worrying time. Sounds horrible.

CavalierApproach · 02/01/2023 02:50

Poor little one! (Nine sounds quite little to me now that I have teens)

So sorry I don’t have any specific knowledge, but I can understand the nosebleeds particularly being alarming.

Have you got children’s Nurofen in, to double up with the Calpol? Some bugs really do seem to need both — everyone here is currently down with a horrible chest virus and overlapping both types of meds seems to really help.

87SPD · 02/01/2023 02:56

Thanks for the replies I wasn’t expecting any at this time.

I was thinking about 111 but concerned at the state of hospitals at the minute and don’t want to be sent to one unnecessarily and make her feel even worse. I suppose I was wondering if anyone else has experience of a similar bug with nose bleeds etc.

@CavalierApproach I do have child’s ibruprofen in, can this be given directly after calpol or should I wait an hour?

I am usually so rational and in control when it comes to illnesses and bugs but we are all exhausted and my poor DD is having such a rough time of it. If she still feels I’ll in the morning I will call the doctors first thing.

thanks again!

I don’t have any advice, but solidarity. I am up with a tearful, pale, shaky 9 year old who has a raging UTI, is peeing bloody urine and vomiting every hour.

I have had a great experience with 111 tonight, perhaps try them?

Hope our girls get better real quick.

Mannymoomin · 02/01/2023 02:59

I’m saying 111 too.

I have a teenager that gets nosebleeds, his is allergy related and can wake up with them.

Are the nosebleeds something new for your DD? Could be being in a different country triggering an allergy that’s coincidentally occurred at the same time as catching a bug.

Hope she and your DH are feeling better soon, and that you don’t also catch it!

Spacebears · 02/01/2023 03:00

Does she ever get nosebleeds ? I used to suffer with them as a child when I would get very hot. Perhaps because she has a fever and is feeling hot, that has triggered the nosebleed. Call 111 if your worried though.

YouWithoutEnd · 02/01/2023 03:02

If she’d had a runny/snotty nose that she’s been blowing a lot that could have got dried out and irritated inside that could explain the nose bleeds, equally, the force of so much vomiting could also mean she’s damaged a blood vessel that keeps reopening and causing a bleed again.

sashh · 02/01/2023 03:03

Another vote for 111 or call out your GP.

First thing is still a bank holiday, so even first thing it may mean a 111 call

saturnisturning · 02/01/2023 03:05

Ah OP that’s so worrying.

id either phone 111 or get onto doc first thing (if they’re open)

@Sukisal hope your little one is ok. As an adult with UTIs it’s horrendous

YouWithoutEnd · 02/01/2023 03:05

GP’s don’t reopen until Tuesday.

CavalierApproach · 02/01/2023 03:06

You can give ibuprofen and paracetamol at the same time @87SPD — totally safe in the age-appropriate dose — or you can stagger them, if you like. Just write down what you give and when! I always think I will remember but in the middle of illness it’s easy to get muddled.

Mine has an out of hours service, I thought they all did.

Oh no sorry to hear that! Sounds very distressing for you both! I am going to call 111 just for peace of mind and it’s good to know you had a good experience with them so recently too,

hope your DD gets better real quickly xx

Out of hours service usually accessed by calling 111.

Thank you - I have just give her some ibruprofen as she is complaining of headache and sore throat still.

good idea to write it down I’ll note it on my phone now! Thank you so much.

Sending positive coping thoughts to you both, @87SPD and @Sukisal

87SPD · 02/01/2023 03:09

Thanks everyone, I forgot that tomorrow is a bank holiday! 🙈 I am going to call 111 now for peace of mind.

thanks again xx

I would definitely call 111. I think your DD needs to be triaged and they will either tell you to wait and call a doctor when they are open, or a medic will phone you back and ask more questions, and either say it’s safe enough to wait or will get you to see someone in person. Be prepared to be on the phone for a good while to get through to 111.

She will probably be fine but this is something that 111 is there for - she probably needs questions at least over the phone just to be on the safe side. In the meantime look up NHS advice online about nosebleeds and headaches.

Sukisal · 02/01/2023 03:16

Thanks @CavalierApproach and @saturnisturning - I had no idea UTIs caused vomiting! She’s vomited more today and tonight than she has in her entire life put together bless her.

@87SPD honestly, I did the 111 online thing, they said a call back would happen. The aim is 2 hours but they did say it might be longer- it was 3.5 hours for us. They rang at 00:30, I had an appt at the out of hours GP based in the local hospital for 1.30am, examination, urine dip test, antibiotics dispensed and back home in bed by 2.40pm.

it was a great service and I hope you have a similar experience xx

saturnisturning · 02/01/2023 03:39

@Sukisal im not sure what antibiotic they give to kids for UTIs but trimethoprim is often given to adults and it rarely has any effect on me. I tend to need nitrofurantoin to get rid of it. I’ve also had co amoxiclav to keep it out my kidneys.
you can be so sick with UTIs - they’re absolutely vicious at times. Once she’s better remind her about hygiene and how to wipe down there to try to avoid it.

Marmitepot · 02/01/2023 03:40

I called 111 at 3am the week before Christmas and got a call back really quickly which suprised me. Good luck.

oakleaffy · 02/01/2023 03:42

@87SPD
I had the most severe vomiting bug a few days before Christmas..it was so bad I worried about pulling a muscle with the endless dry heaving {13.5 hours..I times it !}

There are some horrible bugs about at the moment {UK}

I hope your poor daughter and the other one mentioned on here gets better soon.
Nothing worse than relentless vomiting.

🙈

RightsHoarder · 02/01/2023 03:48

My daughter gets nosebleeds but they were especially bad - 25 minutes long and terrifyingly large clots afterwards - when she had Covid. Headaches too.
