Feel weird about this letter?

Mirandawrongs · 01/01/2023 09:26

Yesterday a letter came through my door from a bank.
not my bank but I just thought it was advertising etc.
its a residential mortgage acceptance, detailing address of mortgaged property and how much mortgage is costing and payment details etc.
its for my neighbour. We have the same first name and similar surnames (think Thomas/Thompson) but it has my door number on it. She is three doors away with her family.

we are only on nodding terms.
should I:

  1. bin it
  2. return to sender with not known at this address
  3. give it to her

Why wouldn’t you just put it through her door?

PifandHercule · 01/01/2023 09:28

Option 3

Palmtree9 · 01/01/2023 09:28

She's 3 doors away. Drop it round! And ask her to make sure the bank have the right details for her

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/01/2023 09:28

Ring the bank. It might be fraud.

Mirandawrongs · 01/01/2023 09:29

Just to add, I have no problem with random wrong deliveries but it’s a mortgage for hundreds of thousands to my address that has me all weird!

@MrsMoastyToasty thats my worry

Skiptothelooo · 01/01/2023 09:31

Return to sender- I wouldn’t want my address being used for a mortgage application!

Mirandawrongs · 01/01/2023 09:32

@Skiptothelooo
its an congratulations, acceptance letter!

Butterlover1 · 01/01/2023 09:32

Return to sender.

If it's a mistake your neighbour will resolve it next week with the bank.

Definitely don't want to leave it with your address on it.

Tigerstripe20 · 01/01/2023 09:35

Just take it to her, explain that you opened it by mistake and she will need to contact the bank to amend the details, not sure why it’s weird ?
There are a lot of new posties at the moment, so easily done.

Ah sorry edited I have seen it’s your address on the application, let her know !

Mirandawrongs · 01/01/2023 09:36

@Tigerstripe20
postman hasn’t got it wrong though.
she has.

I would contact the bank. I would not just leave it to my neighbour to correct the error.

Iwanttoslowdown · 01/01/2023 09:38

You need to contact the bank - it could be their error but you also need a paper trail in case.

frazzledasarock · 01/01/2023 09:38

Return it to the bank. I’d also check with land registry and ensure there is nothing against your property in that banks name.

Nik2015 · 01/01/2023 09:39

Contact the bank asap and make it clear the address is wrong.

ShakespearesBlister · 01/01/2023 09:43

rubyslippers · 01/01/2023 09:28

Why wouldn’t you just put it through her door?

Presumably because she's already opened it which might be embarrassing. Also because it's very unusual for a mortgage of hundreds of thousands of pounds to have the wrong address on it. I'd stick it through the door under cover of darkness so they don't know who opened it then tell the bank the address is incorrect.

Mirandawrongs · 01/01/2023 09:44

mind made up, I’ll return to bank with a covering letter.
thank you all

Does the actual mortgage details have her name and address? So it's just the delivery address that has your door number?

Or is the entire letter addressed to your property? (With the mortgage in her name but for your property)
Sorry - I'm a tad confused!

I'd call the bank also, very very odd to have been sent to your address. But Id be more concerned if the actual mortgage is for your property, not so much if it was just addressed to me by mistake, but the actual property in the mortgage is correct with your neighbours name and house number.

PigeonPerchingOnMyWall · 01/01/2023 09:48

Return to sender or phone the mortgage company explaining you accidently opened the letter and that the details are all wrong. I wouldn’t want a mortgage linked to my address that wasn’t mine.

Mirandawrongs · 01/01/2023 09:51

@Girlmumma1
its addressed to her at my address for a residential mortgage for a flat about ten miles away.

it lists mortgage amount, repayment amount starting in feb, from which account they payment is coming from.

she does have several rental properties so I think this is another one.

Op can you clarify this?

Is it the mailing label that is wrong or is the address on the documentation and letter for your property?

Both are probably just errors in data entry but if it is just the mailing address, I would take it to her. If it’s your address the mortgage is for, I would call the bank

Mirandawrongs · 01/01/2023 09:56

So it was addressed to your name and door number, with her name/bank details on the actual mortgage? It sounds as though just the delivery is wrong - which also isn't great, I'd still contact the bank.

But for an acceptance letter detailing mortgage, she would've had to take proof of ID etc when applying for the mortgage, and I assume the bank details of which the payments will be coming out, are NOT your bank details?

I remember having to give a tonne of proof of ID and proof of current address etc when applying for both previous mortgages, so it's odd that only something has come to you this far down the line of there was anything suspicious going on.

I think the confusion of names hasn't helped either, but I'd deffo contact the bank to be on the safe side. Maybe just let her know and say you've sent it back as it had your door number on the address label. Or if you'd prefer to, just don't say anything.

Absolutely check with the land registry.

Something definitely feels a little off here.
