Feel weird about this letter?

Yesterday a letter came through my door from a bank.
not my bank but I just thought it was advertising etc.
its a residential mortgage acceptance, detailing address of mortgaged property and how much mortgage is costing and payment details etc.
its for my neighbour. We have the same first name and similar surnames (think Thomas/Thompson) but it has my door number on it. She is three doors away with her family.

we are only on nodding terms.
should I:

  1. bin it
  2. return to sender with not known at this address
  3. give it to her

This does seem a bit odd that's it's your actual address, I'd personally send an official letter stating you want the bank to check it's all above board and not registered to your address in any way.
I'd also prefer neighbour didn't know I knew.
Just on the off chance too, I'd phone the post office and check there's no redirections associated with your address, just in case!

JoyeuxNarwhal · 01/01/2023 10:29

Return to sender. Or call them. And maybe check your credit rating with Experian or similar.

mumda · 01/01/2023 10:32

They shouldn't have the wrong address on itm that needs checking out carefully with the bank.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 01/01/2023 10:34

On my first mortgage the sols office kept getting the address wrong - think 33 instead of 35 - so I would also call the bank and report it to them.

forrestgreen · 01/01/2023 10:34

Send back to bank

Check your credit score

purpledalmation · 01/01/2023 10:35

Talk to the neighbour. Sounds like it's just a mistaken delivery. It's not fraud as it's not even your bank.

bestofme · 01/01/2023 10:45

It most likely isn't fraud, just an admin error. When processing the application, the bank/ mortgage advisor will have picked up the wrong correspondence address (your house number rather than hers).
We had this when applying for a mortgage, but in our case it was a residential mortgage. The bank processed the mortgage offer on the wrong property! We had a few furious conversations with the advisor and bank as we didn't want any delays with the purchase.
I agree with you OP, send it back with a covering letter. Explain the error and ask them to contact your neighbour by phone/ email to resolve.

Harleigh · 01/01/2023 11:00

I wouldnt give it to her, it could be fraud.

MatildaJayne · 01/01/2023 11:04

I’d return it to the bank. It might be completely innocent. My last car was registered to three doors down because the car dealership clicked on to the wrong address on the drop down list you get with the ‘find my address’ postcode search which is used by the DVLA and every other company. Which was embarrassing when I got a fine for accidentally driving in a bus lane!

nicknamehelp · 01/01/2023 11:10

I think chances are they've just put the wrong house number on paper work hence why it's been put through your door. Why not just knock on her door and have a conversation.....

Princessglittery · 01/01/2023 11:20

@Mirandawrongs Land Registry offer a free service to update the contact details on your property’s register. www.gov.uk/registering-land-or-property-with-land-registry/update-or-correct-the-register

You can register 3 addresses, if you make one your email address any notification relating to your property is emailed to you. This is a fraud protection measure as snail mail can be intercepted. You may recall the case of an empty property being sold by fraudsters an email address as a contact would prevent this.

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 01/01/2023 11:21

Has happened to me twice. Human error at the bank when choosing the address from a drop down menu.
I went into the bank to make sure the other person was removed from my address and gave them the letter back.

NosyNeighbour22 · 01/01/2023 11:57

I have accidentally used a neighbours address before because of the option on websites to put your postcode in first and then scroll through the street numbers until you find your house. It sometimes rejigs a little and it’s easy to end up with the wrong number without realising. I would just give her the letter in person and tell her that’s she must have inadvertently used your house no.

That should be reported to whoever regulates solicitors. They should be super accurate regarding mortgages and property.

Do you have to prove your ID to your mortgage company and solicitor?
Yes. So why should they get that information wrong at any point?
