To not understand why there is so much backlash against kids movies with gay characters these days?

It's all over the place these days, people "outraged", but 10 years ago there were kids movies with gay characters and you'd hear barely a peep.

Watched Happy Feet over Christmas and I'd forgotten the whole B plot was two gay shrimp having a domestic because it wasn't a big deal. Saw Strange World too but all I kept hearing about it was from homophobes throwing tantrums it seems like.

People don't want their kids indoctrinated

This exactly

Indoctrinated how? How is having gay characters indoctrination?

FrippEnos · 22/01/2023 11:40

I would much rather they wrote new characters than change existing characters as often it changes to entire dynamic of the character.

I don't know, I haven't studied it. But there are people who believe that.

Parents prevent their children from viewing all sorts of material at an early age. Whether it contains excessive violence, sex or just content they don't want their children exposed to. I'm guessing because of concerns of the impressions the content may have.

Regardless of what the motivations are, I'm fine with Parents having the autonomy to be able regulate content that their children watch. Even if it's benign homosexuality.

So it isn't "indoctrination" that's the reason, it's ignorance and fear.

And no, you don't catch gay from watching two people of the same sex kiss on TV. Does seeing two women kiss on TV make you want to kiss women? Does it work if it's two men? Do women only turn gay if they see women kiss and men only turn gay of they see men kiss? Who let's gay penguins watch TV??

Would you be OK with families banning their kids watch anything with non-White people in it because they're racists and worry their kids might catch liking non-, white people?

Honestly, I don't care. I was just answering OPs Qs not sharing my own views.

I take it OP you the nl things like the new Scoobie doo series "Velma" is good then 🙄.

Sorry but creators need to actually create new content rather than woke butchering of all the old stuff.

Don't know about public outrage but I know my DD gets annoyed about gay characters where their entire personality is being gay

Stereotyping is rife, especially in kids tv where all the gay male characters are massively flamboyant, into dance and wear headbands and glitter to school (her words)

Apparently they don't do interesting characters that just happen to be gay on tv or films aimed at younger audiences

Course they do. Heartstopper. Merli. Big boys. Although that's a bit rude lol. Waterloo Road, Hollyoaks.

Haven't seen velma, but are you saying it has gay characters and therefore it's bad?

You were trying to justify honophobia.

pointythings · 22/01/2023 15:23

Though remakes have their place (and are an old tradition long predating the advent of what some like to pejoratively call 'woke') I do prefer original content, preferably where the sexuality of the characters just is. It shouldn't be an issue. It's why I like The Orville so much. Fortunately we're starting to get there now.

Meanwhile I do also enjoy watching conservatives combust when gay people are depicted.

rumship · 22/01/2023 15:28

How about the arch it and come back too me. 🙄

I've just remembered. I know I said I hadn't seen stuff like this but when the fantastic beasts films first came out, my own DM who is a huge HP fan was furious because Dumbledore was gay.
She was insisting that he wasn't Confused

Weirdly, some young queer theorist types were exactly the same about Dumbledore being gay, in a “how can he possibly be gay if we don’t know all the details of his sex life, she must be making it up!” kind of way. Grin

I have no interest in watching Velma or a YouTube video from some MRA.

I watched the video. Not sure what it has to do with the OP though.

Presumably because it was a critique of what was wrong with Velma which is an adult remake of a children's TV show with gay characters as per the OP.

Yes they key word being adult remake. Not aimed at kids. And I've heard it's not very good, but is that because it features gay characters?

Velma has always been something of a gay icon.
But IMO Velma is not bad because it has gay people in it but because it isbadly written

Soubriquet · 22/01/2023 17:08

Absolutely nothing wrong with a gay character. It’s normal

Kids are forced to see straight people kiss on tv. What’s wrong with them seeing gay people?

Its just another choice when they are older

Interesting way to obfuscate your own opinions. Spout homophobic views and then when it's challenged say "ooh not I don't share my own opinion, only conjectured opinions of underrepresented groups (like homiphobics)
