To not understand why there is so much backlash against kids movies with gay characters these days?

It's all over the place these days, people "outraged", but 10 years ago there were kids movies with gay characters and you'd hear barely a peep.

Watched Happy Feet over Christmas and I'd forgotten the whole B plot was two gay shrimp having a domestic because it wasn't a big deal. Saw Strange World too but all I kept hearing about it was from homophobes throwing tantrums it seems like.

Who is outraged though? I never see anything about this.

Me neither. I don't really want to go googling looking for it either.

People don't want their kids indoctrinated

It’s true, I had a stretch armstrong as a kid and a few wrestling figures, all those pecks and abs turned me into a raging homo, they really should be banned.

ofwarren · 31/12/2022 22:03

I've just remembered. I know I said I hadn't seen stuff like this but when the fantastic beasts films first came out, my own DM who is a huge HP fan was furious because Dumbledore was gay.
She was insisting that he wasn't Confused

TheGuv1982 · 31/12/2022 22:04

See plenty of Facebook comments, but not just in terms of Gays, it’s more about anything seen as “woke”.

Anyone cast that’s not a straight white male is clearly in the job due to wokeness gone mad - I’m not overly convinced that a lot on these comments are from “real” people either. There’s a significant effort being made to disenfranchise certain demographics across the pond and it’s seemingly working.

😂

Errr, what? 3 generations in my family and there is no homophobia.

ChristineCagney11 · 31/12/2022 22:08

@Simonjt
The fact I wasn't allowed to have a stretch Armstrong turned me gay I'm sure.
That stretchy fella has alot to answer for.

mumarooni · 31/12/2022 22:13

Also had no idea anyone was outraged by gay characters in films...hope this is not widespread. The whole heat of gender debates has made me feel fearful though as a lesbian mumma. I feel like some of the fear/anger at new forms of thinking about gender is (among a subgroup) re-energising hatred for anything that is not heteronormative (I know that other gender critical folk are arguing against heteronormativity...it's not all one program etc). Maybe that's why op feels there is more homophobia for gay characters at the moment? it feels quite scary...like some people wanna turn the clock back in a way that threatens the achievements of gay rights as though some "natural" hetero family unit should be restored.

ofwarren · 31/12/2022 22:23

😳
My kids watched that the other day with their Dad and loved it.
The comments are horrific! The "gay agenda"...

PennyRa · 31/12/2022 22:59

And that will be what's left after moderation

PurpleButterflyWings · 31/12/2022 23:06

Nope I never experience this. Only know of 3 homophobic people; A couple 12 or so houses down the road from me in their 30s, and someone who was at college when my DC were there (10 years ago,) and he is in his late 20s.

BabyOnBoard90 · 31/12/2022 23:08

Everydaywheniwakeup · 31/12/2022 21:54

I'm pretty sure my teenager isn't gay because she watched gay penguins as a toddler.

Indeed. Nature vs nurture

PurpleButterflyWings · 31/12/2022 23:09

Internet comments are worthless. Most people in real life don't really think like the internet would suggest. Many forum/facebook comments are bullshit/made up.

tillytown · 31/12/2022 23:10

The only people who get outraged by gay people in films are the idiots on reddit and youtube, maybe go ask them why it bothers them so much, we can't answer for them

Iam4eels · 01/01/2023 00:15

You should see the amount of people imploding on SM because the London fireworks featured Pride.

Coffeaddict · 01/01/2023 00:23

WhatLikeItsHard · 31/12/2022 21:59

I think it's really important for kids to see gay relationships.

I'm sure one of my older relatives who gets outraged about stuff like this is actually gay themselves. But they are so indoctrinated to think being gay is wrong and disgusting that they will never admit it to themselves or anyone else. Really sad.

Totally agree with this. The only friend who I ever had the used to make homophobic comments ( outrage at same sex coupes kissing in public but not batting an eye lid at opposite sex couples) was in the closet. She is now happily married ( to a woman) and shockingly enough her mental health is significantly better for it.

For what it's worth were 35 but grew up in iteland in the 90s where being gay was alot less accepted

Bringonsummer19 · 01/01/2023 00:28

meh I live in London and this does not come up. One of the most open and accepting cities in the world

FixItUpChappie · 01/01/2023 00:30

I have a problem with gender stuff being snuck into children’s tv, but gay relationships aren’t on my radar at all

^^This. The issue is peoples reasonable and awakening worries about trans activism and "wokeness" are causing unreasonable spill over resentments/backlash IMO. Not sure if I'm articulating this properly.

I do understand that some people feel like some things are being "shoved down their throats", because many things are in our society at present but personally I think it's great to see gay characters in every day film and television.

Not heard any outrage. We must move in different circles.

It’s all over Mumsnet. Well, all over one thread. This one, actually. By the OP. That’s it.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 01/01/2023 00:30

A lot of people being very naïve (or disingenuous) on this thread.

Lots of people on tiktok and other social media platforms have been espousing the usual “I don’t want my kids to see that” without being able to see how there really isn’t any difference between hetero or homosexual loving relationships.

Just because you’re not seeing it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. There’s always ‘outrage’ at anything gay. As a species I don’t get it but it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Leafstamp · 01/01/2023 00:31

Iam4eels · 01/01/2023 00:15

That’s different to your OP.

I don’t know what people you’ve seen have been saying but I’ve some objecting to the word ‘queer’ being used.

I think there is understandable frustration that LGBTQ+ is not only disproportionately given attention as compared to, say, disabled rights, but also that some LGB people are wanting to distance themselves from TQ+ now. Also understandable since LGB are sexual orientations and TQ+ are not.

BethDuttonsTwin · 01/01/2023 00:34

I don't think it's always outrage so much as irritation at having disproportionate representation of gay and other identity groups. It feels false and manipulative.

pinkfondu · 01/01/2023 00:45

Where 👀

Tigger7654 · 01/01/2023 00:46

I haven't heard or read of anyone complaining about this, what have you heard and where from? You may need better friends 🤷
