I don’t want to buy a house directly opposite affordable housing

I have name changed for this because I expect to get annihilated.

DH and I are considering reserving a plot on a new development. I think all developments now need to have a certain amount of affordable housing. Our first choice of house would be directly opposite three affordable plots and this is a real sticking point. DH is also wary. There were originally 8 plots with our preferred design of house, they have all sold except this one and I suspect that’s the reason.

Of course we could always go with our Plan B type of house round the corner, but that seems such a shame. When we bought our current home, 12 years ago. One of the mortgage questions was proximity to any affordable housing, so its clearly an issue.

Am I worrying unnecessarily?

OP, I’m a little confused what you think goes on on affordable housing plots? 🤣 we’ve got plenty in our area and the people living in them are no different lol!

vodkaredbullgirl · 31/12/2022 17:38

😕

Pennyforthezombies · 31/12/2022 17:38

Are you sure affordable not social housing?

ChessieFL · 31/12/2022 17:39

For the last 10.5 years I have lived in new builds directly opposite affordable housing/ housing association properties and have had no issues at all. What problems are you expecting?

Enterusername111333 · 31/12/2022 17:39

I don't see the issue but it's your choice. I live on a new estate and couldn't tell you what's social/affordable or not and don't give a shit. There are some right stuck up cunts about though who like to blame every tony but of nonsense on the 'folk from the council houses' as clearly no one with a mortgage fails to pick up their dogs poo or have kids who start arguments at the park.

ILoveeCakes · 31/12/2022 17:40

I wouldn't buy the house either, but I also don't get what you expect this thread to achieve. Well, apart from getting you the attention that you're obviously craving right now.

AreOttersJustWetCats · 31/12/2022 17:41

What are your actual worries about this? What do you think will happen? What specific problems do you expect to occur?

If it's just a nebulous fear of "people who live in affordable housing" then it's snobbery, and I'd advise you not to buy it because I wouldn't want to inflict a snob on your new neighbours.

CrapBucket · 31/12/2022 17:41

I bought a new build and they made a big deal of pointing out where all the affordable and social housing was on the plan... I couldn't care less. Most of the people round here are lovely, the only ones who aren't, live in the big posh house.

That's just a change of branding for the PC era, no?

Alexandernevermind · 31/12/2022 17:41

Ha ha, funny post.
Affordable doesn't mean rough, it just means starter home 🤣🤣

Enterusername111333 · 31/12/2022 17:41

I've also had several mortgages and never had a question like that. Wtf? I've been asked if there's a tree over 20m nearby but never about the tenancy arrangements of neighbours.

You do realise complete arseholes can get mortgages? It's a financial thing, not a personality/morality assessment. Owned homes can be let out to anyone. Councils buy owned homes all the time. You're never going to be more than 6ft away from a poor person.

Absolutely nothing wrong with people/ human beings who live in affordable housing ! My daughter lives in rented accommodation and she is an amazing person studying to be a social worker.
The housing market is unaffordable for the majority of decent, hardworking people .

Dillydollydingdong · 31/12/2022 17:43

It would never have occurred to me that this was a problem. Grab that house quick before someone else does.

I thought affordable meant shared ownership.

serenghetti2011 · 31/12/2022 17:43

I’m a nurse, in temporary accommodation with my kids, perfectly quiet and hard working that might get such a home sorry you don’t want to live near us but I wouldn’t want to live close to you either shitty attitude

There are problems families anywhere, not just affordable housing.

Enterusername111333 · 31/12/2022 17:44

Jeez... you need to think a bit harder.

Are you sure you're capable of home ownership yourself?

I can't believe you're not embarassed to have done so little research about what qualifies as affordable housing before posting that.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 31/12/2022 17:44

I used to live in an ex local authority flat totally surrounded by social housing. Never had any problem getting a mortgage on it. Give your head a wobble. Do you think only drug dealers and people with ASBOs live in affordable housing?

ILoveeCakes · 31/12/2022 17:44

anerki101 · 31/12/2022 17:43

Problem families?

This is what the OP wanted - people to start listing stereotypes.
Anyone got any more?

Affordable housing is privately owned, social housing is council owned and affordable social housing is privately owned and rented to the council for social housing

Affordable housing is normally first time buyers isn't it?

NeedMoMoney · 31/12/2022 17:44

Sounds like the op thinks whoever gets the houses opposite are going to act like the family from shameless....

Clearly that is exactly what she thinks. Only bad / criminal people aren't well off, didn't you know?
