To ask what you save for best?

You know some people keep fancy glasses or cutlery sets or expensive bags and perfume for best, do you keep something for best? If so, what and why?

I use absolutely everything I have and don't save things for best. I'm not sure if that means I don't have any decent stuff worth saving, or if I don't want to only use the things for a short while.

I no longer save things for best. I've only got a few precious things and I know this sounds daft, but I've photographed them in case they get broken.

I love this idea.

I used to save everything. Now I don't. I use a lot of special things a lot of the time.

We all need to do little things that make us happy.

You have the right idea!! But how often do those " for best" occasions arise? You are reducing waste and the need to have duplicates of things. It is nice having spare things for best but why not enjoy using those things day to day?

I was a bugger for saving things for special times, things just end up being redundant or barely used.

Because if you use the “best” everyday it becomes an everyday item and not a treat.

Nothing - it seems utterly pointless to me!

PeskyYeti · 30/12/2022 23:33

Nice perfume because I can't afford to use it every day. I have dupes for everyday and real one for nights out

Saracen · 30/12/2022 23:36

Anything made of thin glass, such as wine glasses. I don't get particular pleasure from using them and neither do the DC. Only DH prefers them, and he likes to give them to his guests. He is also very good at breaking them. I hate the resulting shards and splinters.

I hide them in the back of the cupboard and only get them out for guests, or for DH to use on special occasions.

RaininSummer · 30/12/2022 23:37

I only use my nice crockery for Christmas and Easter family meals as it would get chipped in every day use.

Franticbutterfly · 30/12/2022 23:40

I saved a couple of Diptique candles and by the time I'd lit them, they didn't smell of anything...So I don't save anything now.

ZenNudist · 30/12/2022 23:44

I have perfume for best. Over time the scent becomes associated with the good times and feeling like I've made the effort.

I don't use my best glassware every day because it could break too easily.

I have going out handbags that I use for the right social occasion.

Some clothes saved for times I want to look my best but I use all my clothes. If I wear something to the gym, supermarket shopping or school run I will feel less glam in it if I'm going out with friends or family.

Just got a new handbag so I'm going to use that only when I want to look good, like at work or when going out but its light colour so won't use it all the time.

Eventually my best stuff becomes everyday.

We don't tend to have anything for best. Some wine glasses which don't fit in the dishwasher but that's hassle factor more than saving them for best.
I am also getting better at treating myself to things. After years of dupes, I am in a position to buy the actual item (well, of some things!) or a more expensive version and I am doing just that. I am sure that sometimes I am just paying for the packaging or branding but sometimes that gives me pleasure anyway.

Phos · 30/12/2022 23:58

Nothing anymore.

Since 2020 when so many of my daughter's "best" clothes went largely unworn, I don't keep anything for best anymore. What's the point? If you like something use/wear/drink it.

Floralnomad · 30/12/2022 23:58

We use everything , no point in owning it if all you do is look at something occasionally .

RobertaFirmino · 31/12/2022 00:10

I don't save anything for best at all. Shouldn't every single day be as 'best' as we can make it? I can recall a poem about how the writer would have burned a rose shaped candle, had she had her days over again.

fitflopqueen · 31/12/2022 00:14

Dinner service and cutlery from our wedding 33 yrs ago used occasionally.

My watch - very expensive but worn every day for past 28 yrs so definately had good value from it and I have a good 10 yr old handbag which is also in daily use but starting to look worn out.
Use perfume everyday be it to go out with friends or just walk the dog.

mrsmacmc · 31/12/2022 00:15

Dinner service and cutlery canteen plus crystal glasses. They were wedding presents and come out at special times of year including Christmas and NY.

A shower cloth that was my DGM and irreplaceable which is used to cover the dinner service when it's resting in the cupboard and once I've dressed the table to keep dust off ❤️

AlwaysGoingBackwards · 31/12/2022 00:16

We use everything. My DH and DC deserve to use the ‘posh’ stuff just as much as visitors do. My DC definitely appreciate lovely things and know how to use them.

Only exception is a Wedgewood coffee set that belonged to my DH’s late grandmother. It’s beautiful but we never, ever use it. It’s ornamental only.

AlwaysGoingBackwards · 31/12/2022 00:17

*wedgwood!
(Definitely shouldn’t use it given I can’t even spell it!)

paintitallover · 31/12/2022 00:32

I have a dinner service I save for best, because I'm beyond sick of the amount of chipped and broken plates which happen in this house.
