Almost 3 year old always talking about witches

And vampires, ghosts, skeletons, monsters....

But mainly witches. She is also saying happy Halloween a lot...

Is this strange ? My husband is concerned.. me, less so.

Wouldn't worry. Most childhood fairy tales and story books involve witches etc (Meg and Mog etc). Little people have wonderful imaginations; hence the inevitable monsters under the bed (or an abject terror of the Tweenies in my DDs case 🙄)

If she is drawing a pentagram on the kitchen table and sacrificing the goldfish, then I would be concerned.

JolieJ · 29/12/2022 19:37

@tigerprawnzie no his favourite thing to say is "you're a naughty naughty bird" to anyone he's not happy with Grin

He's moved onto other things now but a few months he used to mention scary witches a lot! I'm sure she will move on as well

Mrsuntidy · 29/12/2022 19:39

Quite normal at this age....my two have a huge fascination with Halloween.... And headstones 🤷

Angelik · 29/12/2022 19:40

Ahhh it's lovely. My DS used to exterminate everyone and/or scan them with his sonic screwdriver. We were on the edge of our sanity with the constantness but now remember it with happiness.

SnowAndIceLobelia · 29/12/2022 19:43

Normal! My own witch phase lasted until my tweens though. Worst Witch was a much loved staple of my childhood.

Smartiepants79 · 29/12/2022 19:44

Well it’s been many weeks since Halloween. Has she been having nightmares??
If the characters are coming from an age appropriate source then there is no need for it to be scary at all.
Plenty of child friendly witches, skeletons and vampires about in kids tv and books.
The bigger deal you make out of it the more interesting it becomes.
Just let it run its natural course.

Toomuchlaundrytoolittletime · 29/12/2022 19:48

My 2 year old has a similar obsession and yup, it started with Steve and Maggie. I don't encourage it when he discusses it incase it scared him but we see it as harmless. It also bodes well for when he is older and we can crack Hocus Pocus and Casper on!

No I don't think she's had nightmares! Well at least she's not been waking in the night or anything like that.

She's had such a massive, massive developmental leap the last 5-6 weeks, it's been amazing to see. She also had a huge one at the same time last year.

What’s to be concerned about? I’d be actively encouraging it.

Giggorata · 29/12/2022 20:10

Witches have nothing to do with Satanism, as Satan is a Christian thing.

if you want her to get an accurate or more healthy idea of witches, there is a plethora of age appropriate fiction presenting a positive view of witches, so that she doesn't get traumatised by the evil witch trope.

Could you please suggest any in particular? Thanks so much x

When my dd was 3 she was really scared of witches and used to worry they were in her room at night. She discovered Winnie the witch and stopped being scared. I think it is normal.

Giggorata · 30/12/2022 07:43

Meg and Mog, Winnie the Witch, Room on the Broom, for starters. My DG love being read Room on the Broom.
There's a Witches book with stickers available as well.

Oneanddone88 · 30/12/2022 07:48

My 3 year old DD is exactly the same, it's so cute. She watches the same YouTube videos and absolutely loves Halloween, more than Christmas! I have to pretend to be a vampire/ witch etc often.

Poppins2016 · 30/12/2022 07:52

tigerprawnzie · 29/12/2022 19:26

Do you ever hear him go ' mummy witch mummy where are you ? '

My 4 year old has been into witches, fairies, etc. for a long while now. When he turned 3, we gave him fairy wings and a wand because he loved Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom (still does, in fact). He's recently become obsessed with mermaids (he was given a costume for Christmas) and will often call me "Mummy Mermaid"! I think it's all par for the course.

girlmom21 · 30/12/2022 07:53

Do you ever hear him go ' mummy witch mummy where are you ?

It's just a song. There's loads of variations like "mommy finger"

Just sing "here I am, here I am, how do you do"

You'll make her day

Kam610 · 30/12/2022 07:55

My nearly 3 year old son is still talking about Halloween too. He specifically talks about witches, and likes watching Room on the Broom, as well as other Halloween related videos on YouTube.

Haha of course, I know ! I do answer her. And I think it's funny. Her dad is so upset by it though. Not sure how to get it through his head that it's not some horrid thing.

Totally normal. My 3yo is still roleplaying trick or treating where we have to pretend she's come to the door Grin

What else is your 3 year old into nowadays ? Mine loves her dolls so much. She's always feeding them, putting them to bed etc etc. and Peppa pig play house, playing in her kitchen.. she also has a step in the kitchen that she carries around all the kitchen counters, to see what we are up to in the kitchen. She loves stirring stuff and pouring things from one cup to the other. Absolutely adores water play / sand / flour play. She will pour flour from one container to another for hours... it keeps her busy but makes such a mess ! She enjoys painting / drawing/ play dough.. I've bought her some tracing books that should be arriving soon, hopefully she'll be interested in that..

She's not hugely into reading, which is a shame. I do manage a bed time story, but she'll only really listen to certain books she likes.

My 4 year old DD loves spooky things. They’re figuring out the world at this age. What’s real and what isn’t. What scares them and what doesn’t. My DD doesn’t like monsters but she still happily talks about them.

Hugasauras · 30/12/2022 08:19

Mine is mostly into small world play and crafts (especially slime!). She likes to act out things with her dinosaur figures or little wooden animals or put on 'shows' for us (that always start with 'It was a stormy stormy night' for some reason). Also building with Lego and magnet tiles.

Aw that's cute ! Yeah I forgot, mine loves building towers with the huge Lego at the moment...

I don't think it's weird. They get really into their interests at that age. I think Hallowe'en was an interest for DS2 as well because I remember only just finishing the rolling stream of Hallowe'en videos and it was Hallowe'en again Grin

But mostly for him it's buses and trams. Only person I know who genuinely has a favourite model of tram and will get overly excited when that tram turns up with our number on it/disproportionately upset when they send another one Grin

Artichokepiglet · 30/12/2022 08:23

Not at all. I also have a three year old and Halloween is his favourite thing (he's also a big fan of Steve and Maggie!) For his second birthday he wanted a skeleton cake. His favourite song is 'Happy', which he calls the werewolf song and sings with the lyrics 'clap along if you feel like a werewolf on a roof' 😂
