To think it’s not that unusual to have no door number?

EncyclopediaOfNought · 29/12/2022 15:20

My house has a name, no number. I frequently have the issue where people get rude over it, especially through Facebook marketplace and Olio etc.

I give the full address, they ask for the number, I clarify the house has a name: ok at this point.

Then then frequently persist and get rude. ‘I need the actual door number’, ‘um, just give me the number’, ‘look at your neighbours house, your number will be the one after that!’ (No houses have a number on this thread road), ‘oh that’s nice you have a name for it, but what’s the number’, ‘yeah, people think it looks smart but what’s the number’m the post office use’

Just now I’ve had ‘I’m not coming unless I get the number’. For a free item 😂

Is it that damn hard to get that not all houses have numbers??? Or is it the classic Aibu attitude of people, basically not getting that not everyone lives in exactly the same world?

Obviously more houses have numbers than not, but it’d have thought the average adult is aware that not every house has? I have an otherwise normal road in a city, only a handful of houses for the postcode so not that hard to find. Google maps etc are exactly accurate in pinpointing the house

It's more uncommon to not have a door number

namechangenumber296 · 29/12/2022 15:22

Common in the countryside; far less common in the city.

WildOats5678 · 29/12/2022 15:23

I know your pain! I have a house name and it’s Welsh too so when I’m in England for work and they ask for my address I get very weird looks and comments for my Welsh address 😂

bellac11 · 29/12/2022 15:24

Its a complete ball ache when houses and roads dont have numbers

Sat nat will only take you to the centre of the post code and believe me, if you've been driving up and down a dark road, in the rain, in winter trying to find 'Oaktrees', which is in fairly small, oldy worldy font on some old wooden board near the front door (not properly lit) you too will be pissed off at not having door numbers

My job involves doing home visits to houses which I dont always know. You shoujld at least ensure that your name of the house is very very prominent, well lit and say to the visitor where in the road it is

Adviceneeded200 · 29/12/2022 15:25

Really?

Where I live our hill has no numbers and hundreds of properties. Even if we did have numbers the houses have been randomly built here since the 1500s so the numbers wouldn't make sense.

I use ebay, Facebook, amazon....

I just get annoyed by the persistence, like if they challenge it enough I’ll admit it’s number 23. I sometimes wonder about putting a random number. Not that it’ll make it any easier to find without neighbouring numbers.

Unless there are only about 4 houses in the street, it’s pretty annoying. When we bought our house, it had a name and a number. There are loads of houses here and none of them had names apart from ours - it’s no different to the others, not the poshest or anything so we have dropped it and only use the number.

spudsuliked · 29/12/2022 15:25

Also. Have a name and no number.. to add to it we don’t have a road name either so it’s just ‘house name’ ‘village name’ which people really don’t love.. very much countryside though

Floweryflora · 29/12/2022 15:25

I’ve a house name only. I’ve never had it questioned but i am not a big frequenter of face book market place

JaneTheVirgin · 29/12/2022 15:25

I don't understand houses not having a number, having always lived in big cities. Ok, there's a street name - then what? You have to walk to every house to look at the name? Numbers have an order. Names are guessing and hard work.

TodayIsFridayHooray · 29/12/2022 15:26

I love in a house with no number. I don't care if it's a name or a number I just like my house, it's where I live! I don't especially like the name but can't be bothered to change it. It is not possible to have a number as it's never had one. I bought this house with its name already in existence!

There was a thread recently implying that people who have house names are really pretentious and wanky! This did actually make me feel a bit sad as I didn't know people thought this!! I am genuinely not pretentious or wanky! I just like my house and wasn't going to refuse to buy it because it only has a name not a number!

Why do people judge so much! And assume all houses with names also must have a number or could have a number? And why do people assume owners of houses with names are all pretentious? Some of us are just normal and the name isn't our fault!!

I guess in my case it’s only a few houses on a road, surrounded by roads with numbers. It’s the original hamlet. People just won’t accept it. In 20 years parcel force haven’t ever delivered as ‘address can’t be found’. Amazon are fine

It’s just house name and then the street, village name, and a post code. It’s a very old house and built before numbering began. No one has to walk looking at names, i give directions. Delivery men find it fine as the sat nav takes them here.

My house is smaller and cheaper than other houses in the area- maybe it doesn’t fit the image??

Does your individual house name come up on Google Maps? Because if it doesn’t then I can see why people would worry but if it does then it seems they’re overreacting. I also have no property number but Google doesn’t list it, so ordering anything that’s not delivered by Royal Mail is a massive PITA.

TorviShieldMaiden · 29/12/2022 15:28

@bellac11 google maps or Waze will take you to the actual house of the name is part of the address. Some houses only have names and even to change it you have to apply to post office and pay!

BaileySharp · 29/12/2022 15:29

I can see why people on marketplace get annoyed as it isn't very easy to tell where abouts on the road the house is!

Google maps, any sat nav will help. Or just look at the doors, it’s a short bit of road. Or ask. Loads of options other than trying to argue the case

Yep. Spent a decade or so in a similar place. Satnav dropped you off at the top of the hill and all roads had no names and all houses had only names. That was fun, but DPD etc usually found us.

Now I live in a market town. All names, no numbers. Oddly DPD etc do find us.

No they dont always, its more common if its a big house but Ive had whole streets with just names and not one indicator of where it is in the street

So you’re a bit of wannabe snob then ? if your house is between 21 and 25 , you are 23, don’t care if you paid for plaque that says “ blue stone manor” on it , you’re number 23 not sure why you don’t tell people that right from the beginning

LBF2020 · 29/12/2022 15:31

We don't have a road name which adds even more confusion.

If they are on their smartphone they can put the address into the map app or website of preference and it’ll show them. Or if they are already messaging me anyway they can just ask. I’ve usually already said the exact location, its next door to the library- easy to find.
