To think it’s not that unusual to have no door number?

EncyclopediaOfNought · 29/12/2022 15:20

My house has a name, no number. I frequently have the issue where people get rude over it, especially through Facebook marketplace and Olio etc.

I give the full address, they ask for the number, I clarify the house has a name: ok at this point.

Then then frequently persist and get rude. ‘I need the actual door number’, ‘um, just give me the number’, ‘look at your neighbours house, your number will be the one after that!’ (No houses have a number on this thread road), ‘oh that’s nice you have a name for it, but what’s the number’, ‘yeah, people think it looks smart but what’s the number’m the post office use’

Just now I’ve had ‘I’m not coming unless I get the number’. For a free item 😂

Is it that damn hard to get that not all houses have numbers??? Or is it the classic Aibu attitude of people, basically not getting that not everyone lives in exactly the same world?

Obviously more houses have numbers than not, but it’d have thought the average adult is aware that not every house has? I have an otherwise normal road in a city, only a handful of houses for the postcode so not that hard to find. Google maps etc are exactly accurate in pinpointing the house

It’s really annoying though. My DC go to school in a village, and the local recreation centre was holding a fun day. It was advertised on Facebook and I messaged the organiser for tickets. She put some aside for me and said I should pick them up from “Treetops” or whatever it was called in the village. Well, I know the village but I don’t live there. So I narrowed down the location on Google maps and then spent ages driving up and down the road trying to work out which one bloody Treetops was, getting more and more embarrassed at every pass, and eventually just drove off because my only option was knocking on every door in the street or at least walking up to every front door as they didn’t have names visible from the road and I couldn’t take the risk it’d be the house of a school friend or something that I was lurking outside like a stalker! Thankfully they had them
on the door of the event otherwise I’d have lost my money! It’s really stressful trying to find a house without any visible signs. Also, the road is technically about two miles long so I wasn’t even entirely sure it was in the village proper and not out in the sticks.

Its a complete ball ache when houses and roads dont have numbers

My job involves doing home visits to houses which I dont always know. You shoujld at least ensure that your name of the house is very very prominent, well lit and say to the visitor where in the road it is

Having done almost six months for Amazon, in 2010, I feel your pain. Terraces, with rows of houses not displaying a number and Flex (Amazon delivery navigation, it's shit) not pinning you to the door, or not knowing which adjacent one to knock on! Getting an angry neighbour shouting, "This is 128, not bloody 126!"

And quite a few with something like "Terry, NE29 3XY" and after knocking on several likely doors and asking for an address next time, being told, "Well, ya found us, didn't ya!"

RabbitHoleOfHell · 29/12/2022 17:27

My house has a name not a number. It’s the oldest one on a road where all the houses (a grand total of 5) have names. Postie recently knocked on and asked me where number 3 was as he was confused by the new owners randomly adding a number to their address😆.

When you had your conversation, either by phone, email or face to face why didn’t you say ‘I don’t know the village, can you let me know how to find it please’.

I used to home visit and would do this for addresses I was unsure of, just a text or something. I’d get a reply like ‘oh it’s opposite the junction with Horcross lane’ or ‘I’ve got a blue van on the drive’ and it would be no issue

The OP has said I have an otherwise normal road in a city.” She lives in a city. As a Londoner, I find it pretentious AF for someone to not have a house number. It’s a countryside thing. It’s understandable if you live in a small village or hamlet. But if you actually live in a city then it’s ridiculous.

Oh I’m cringing for you. If you buy a house in London, and it doesn’t have a number and never has, neither have the neighbours, what would you like them to do so you don’t judge it pretentious 😂

LakieLady · 29/12/2022 17:31

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 29/12/2022 17:19

Nope no need to be lobbying or changing entire streets!!

It’s simple. Have the house name prominently displayed on the gate or house, that’s it. Just do that.
Not a wee teeny tiny cute little flower surrounded tiny name plate. Big bold easy to see day or night signage.

It could be the difference of life or death for a paramedic crew to find you & not waste precious time driving up and down.

I sometimes drive past a house that has had their house name done on a car number plate.

It's brilliant in the dark, because headlights make it really clear.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a house in London that didn’t have a number. That’s why people are getting suspicious.

AriettyHomily · 29/12/2022 17:34

My parents house has no number just a name. When we had to call an ambulance it was a pita, and the signal where the live is shit too.

She didn’t say she was in London. Why would she make yo she’s no number. And there are plenty of houses in London with no number . London is a big place.

pigsinoodies · 29/12/2022 17:36

For all the people with their own stories of struggling to find named houses on a road www.findmyaddress.co.uk/ is perfect for locating most addresses.

Ch3wylemon · 29/12/2022 17:37

I live in a village with no house numbers. Fortunately we've been here long enough that all the delivery firms know where we are.

For others I send either or all of the following
A) Photo of the end of our lane which happens to be where most Sat navs direct to.
B) what three words location
C) google pin.

If that fails I go to the end of the lane and wave.

Number 1 London?

Number 1 London?

Although, that is actually a number!

But most people wont know where that is

millerpie · 29/12/2022 17:42

No house number here, not many in our little village do we all have names.

SofiaSoFar · 29/12/2022 17:42

Amazing that some people are posting comments about OP "being awkward" and others insisting that 'all houses have numbers really, but some people just choose not to use them'.

Do you people not look into things before proclaiming your thoughts to be fact?

We live on a long windy lane where the first 4 houses have numbers, there's then about half a mile of nothing but fields, then our house and another 5 houses spread over another half mile, then eventually another house which is number 5(!), then more houses of which none have numbers. It's utterly impossible for us to have a number if we wanted one.

There's a world of difference between people just deciding to have a house name when they already had a number and then houses which categorically do not have, and have never had, a number.

Ch3wylemon · 29/12/2022 17:45

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 29/12/2022 16:03

So annoying and an utter waste of time for anyone who needs to get to the address.

Ambulances and district nurses spend ages driving round looking for a house with either no number or even worse, no sign, number or marking on the property itself.
The amount of time I have wasted driving up and down screwing up my eyes trying to find this on a house is infuriating.
Im too busy for this kind of nonsense.

When I worked in the community I used google street view. If it was a first visit I also used to phone the client first and ask about parking etc. most people would provide a landmark for me to look for. Such as next to the library as in the OP.

Reugny · 29/12/2022 17:45

DappledThings · 29/12/2022 17:18

What do you mean? I buy things online all the time. Not using the county has never caused an issue.

When I buy online due to how crap certain couriers are I check whether I can pick it up using click n collect. Some retailers have "interesting" ways of listing their physical stores.

Oh and with Royal Mail it's optional whether you write the county or not.

SamMil · 29/12/2022 17:54

My house only has a name too. It's also down an unnamed track half a mile from the road, with no Google Street view. Delivery drivers love me 😆

gogohmm · 29/12/2022 17:57

It's very rare not to have a number. Tends to only be older houses in villages. Most houses with names have numbers too

EncyclopediaOfNought · 29/12/2022 17:58

Despite London being full of historic houses, houses from medieval times even or which once belonged to Henry the Eighth etc… Despite much of London being hamlets and villages that joined up… there’s a poster that believes among all this wild diversity and history that no houses in London have names???

Ok …. That’s… surprising if they really live there!

It’s got more than most cities I’d guess

I still don't get what it has to do with counties. If I want to click and collect I enter my postcode and it shows me the nearest places I can collect. I never chosen to narrow it down by Kent rather than by my postcode or the name of the nearest town.

And I will continue to consider any counties included in addresses as wrong.

Oh FGS I’m not talking about big famous buildings like Buckingham Palace or Hampton Court. I’m talking about ordinary residential addresses.

EncyclopediaOfNought · 29/12/2022 18:10

Um, go back to the hamlets and former villages bit. Of course there are

Runnerduck34 · 29/12/2022 18:10

My house also has just a name, not particularly old -1930s but in a village, all houses in our village have names none have numbers I accept its a pita for delivery drivers etc.
Our previous house also in a village had a name no number.
In villages and rural locations a house name and no number is actually normal.
In towns and cities then a house number is normal.
Clearly though there are exceptions to this.

On another track what I can't stand is modern housing developments that have several small roads / cul de sacs all with some road name!!

Elphame · 29/12/2022 18:13

I have no door number either - few in our lane do.

I'm quite used to having to hover outside waving to lost courier drivers but all the locals know that being numberless is not unusual here so it's not an issue.

The holiday let address is even worse - no road name, just a Welsh house name and the hamlet name. Our guests though seem to have no problem finding it even if they cannot pronounce either one!
