Jordan Peterson - what is the deal?

I know this guy has been around a while, but I only bothered watching some if his YouTube stuff recently. My impressions are -

He is very articulate

I alternate between thinking he is very insightful and feeling irritated by the 'mansplaining' tone of it all

Some people say he is offensive / misogynist, but I haven't really encountered that??

I get vibes from him of an evangelical (slightly peculiar / deranged?) nature underneath the calm and logical veneer?

When interviewed by Piers Morgan, why did he start crying very suddenly out of nowhere? What was all that about?

Something seems 'off', but also he makes a lot of sense in some ways.

He's very clever, thoughtful & compassionate.

But he has very little/no feminist analysis of anything. That's his archillies heel. It's where the misogyny accusations come from (I think)

Why on Earth would he have any feminist analysis? He’s an evolutionary psychologist.

CosyFanTucci · 25/02/2023 22:55

Jordan Peterson is not very clever. But he's able to come across to thick people as being intelligent (see also Boris Johnson and Russell Brand). The only vaguely smart thing he's capable of is pushing idiots' buttons. I've been around plenty of very intelligent people and JP is a total fraud (and I've been around a few of them too).

This, absolutely, and it makes him very dangerous.

@CosyFanTucci Well, well, well, it seems I have a critic in the room. Let me start by thanking you for the kind words, I appreciate the attention. Now, let’s take a closer look at your statement, shall we? First of all, calling me a fraud without any concrete evidence is a cheap shot, wouldn’t you agree? As for the accusation of pushing buttons, I prefer to think of it as challenging people to think critically and engage in meaningful dialogue. It’s not my fault if some people can’t handle a little intellectual rigor.
As for your claim that I am not very clever, well, that’s a matter of opinion. It’s true that intelligence is subjective, but I have spent decades studying and teaching psychology, philosophy, and other subjects, and have published numerous articles and books on the topic. I have also lectured to sold-out crowds around the world, and my ideas have influenced countless individuals. I’d like to see you try to achieve the same level of success in your field.
Furthermore, you mention Boris Johnson and Russell Brand as others who are able to come across as intelligent to “thick people.” I find this comparison rather insulting, as both of these individuals are quite different from me in terms of their backgrounds, areas of expertise, and political views. It seems to me that you are grasping at straws to make your point.
In conclusion, while I appreciate feedback, I suggest that you do a bit more research and engage in more thoughtful discourse before making baseless accusations. It’s easy to throw around insults from behind a computer screen, but it takes real intelligence and courage to engage in meaningful dialogue and debate, kind regards, the highly intelligent and articulate Jordan B Peterson.

Thelnebriati · 25/02/2023 23:05

His 12 Rules are things your Mum or your Gran say, but they suddenly become pearls of wisdom when he utters them. And its interesting how many people say he is insightful and intelligent, but then struggle to repeat anything he said without using Google.

Holibobbins · 25/02/2023 23:06

I really like him.

He is charismatic. He makes you think he knows what he's on about.

He's actually made up of 95% bullshit.

He has a PhD in Psychology (of which regular psychology study is 5-10 years learning.) and your username is 'bottleofbeer', who's really made up of 95% bullshit here. lol.

bottleofbeer · 25/02/2023 23:21

You're using a stupid username as some kind of point?

I can see you're capable of intelligent discussion.

You're calling a PhD psychologist regarded as a prophet and one of the most intelligent living humans in modern society a bullshitter on Mumsnet.com. I mean... Forgive me for not thinking you haven't got the upper hand here. lol.

stbrandonsboat · 25/02/2023 23:24

I can never quite follow what he's saying. He seems to talk a lot, but doesn't actually say anything. Sometimes it just seems like word salad.

Read his book, it's really good.

OnAPostItNote · 25/02/2023 23:26

He’s good on all the gender ideology stuff.

bottleofbeer · 25/02/2023 23:28

I simply don't agree with much of what he says. Crikey, are you his mum or something?

bottleofbeer · 25/02/2023 23:29

Hang on, did you really just say he's regarded as a prophet?

belly laugh

Thelnebriati · 25/02/2023 23:30

He can't be that much of a fan, he's ignored Rule 9.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 25/02/2023 23:33

He's a miserable twat and he gets on my nerves. I don't doubt that he is clever, and I do agree with some stuff he says. But then a broken clock is still right twice a day so meh.

GingerAle1 · 25/02/2023 23:47

I didn't know about the crying

but I often get a sense that can't believe what's going on in his life - from addiction to the health problems in his family. I wonder if he wishes he'd been a quiet academic - so he has risen to a challenge rather than seeking it out.

I do think he seems volatile but addicts often seem like that.

Dazz13 · 26/02/2023 00:03

Crying? Health problems? Addiction? Yes, these are all difficult challenges that Dr. Peterson has faced in his life, that's not a low blow at all. And he has been called a modern day prophet, not my words, but words I agree with.

Also why would you read his book if you don't like him, Rule number 9? lol.

AndTheSurveySays · 26/02/2023 00:06

A prophet? Confused

NomiMacaroni · 26/02/2023 00:07

There's a reason he appeals more to men than women.

Thelnebriati · 26/02/2023 00:17

Whats the benefit of admiring him if the end result is to be so close minded you only read a persons book if you like them or agree with them?

I may be misinterpreting your post?
I do like him. The addiction problem is one I'm very familiar with. I didn't think he'd come back from it but I am very glad he did.
