AIBU To Think Joey Maynard (Of Chalet School Fame) Was Insufferable

.............with her eleven children, infuriating husband and bizarre tendency to move house (and country) to live next door to the school her sister inexplicably started when Joey was a child.

She also managed to write (at least) two books a year, have a series of multiple pregnancies and poke her nose into the Chalet School's business on a daily basis.

Ah well the doctors at the San equally visit and deliver each others wives babies/do all or any op in every speciality.

I remember being very cross when Charles has his appendix removed and Laurence and Daisy Rosomon bring him home and jo is 'so releaved as Laurie is a doctor!'

No bloody mention that Daisy was a paediatrician!!!! Obviousiy once married she forgets everything.

Elle54321 · 03/02/2023 17:17

There could be a back story, maybe Daisy was struck off 🤔

smileladiesplease · 03/02/2023 17:17

Joey Is insufferable though. When Simone inherits a fantastic chateau her opinion is all negative. 'Could be a white elephant/horribly steep steps/midges/filthy tapestries ffs the woman was jealous as fuck! :)

Much preferred madge even if she did get crisp snd brisk and snappy :)

Mollie too sprogging madly and then leaving all the hard work to madge (sorry Marie snd Rosa)

And Anna poor poor Anna

smileladiesplease · 03/02/2023 17:17

Oh struck off for what? ;)

smileladiesplease · 03/02/2023 17:22

Imagine a film of the chalet school!!

Actors Joey Maynard... Gina McKay

        Anna ... dawn French

        Marylou ... lily James

        Miss Wilson,,, Jennifer Saunders

Any one else ideas

I never read any of the CS books. Was more of a Mallory Towers and St Clare's kinda gal.

Just googled CS though to see if I fancy starting on them at this advanced age.

64 FUCKING BOOKS!

Oh my good God. Not a chance.

StitchesInTime · 03/02/2023 18:11

@Butchyrestingface they’re quite short books really, I know there’s over 60 of them, but I think most people could read through them all quite quickly.

Assuming they wanted to of course.

StitchesInTime · 03/02/2023 18:13

Although the lack of ebook versions may be a bit of a barrier for interested people.

Elle54321 · 03/02/2023 18:21

There are e-books... there's a link around here somewhere.

HoneyAndNuts · 03/02/2023 18:46

Don't worry, Butchy, you can feel like you've read them by picking a few of these and stringing them together, any order. Pick a few more and put them in a different order. And you're done.

Multiple birth, drugged hot milk, hairstyles, ink on hands, creamy sauces and fancy pastries, getting lost in a snowstorm just outside the school fence, obscure crafts, deadly dull play or tableau, colds, pneumonia, measles, chicken pox, TB, dead parents, fatal car crash, fatal train crash, dainty flowered dormy curtains, learning to ski, bad drains, Irish brogues, slang, bad/poor girl comes good.

Have I missed anything?

I love the CS books!

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 03/02/2023 18:54

Soup with sausages in. That must have been an EBD favourite, because it happens in one of the very English Lorna books as well. In that one she specifies vegetable sausages, whatever they were in 1948.

FelicityBeedle · 03/02/2023 19:19

I would love to try the soup with little crisp sausages!

Need a firm type for Matey... hmmm. I would say Maggie Smith but I don't think she looks like I imagine Matron!

You only really need to read the ones set in Austria and during the war, then the quality drops right off!

PuttingDownRoots · 03/02/2023 21:05

The sausage soup sounds like what we had in Andorra. It was more of a pasta shell filled with mince. It was gorgeous.

There were antibiotics available for TB in the fifties. The Nobel prize was given for finding an effective treatment around then. The San must have branched out a bit and there was mention of a general ward in the later books.

On one of the other threads about the CS there was quite a lot of speculation of it turning into a high class drug rehabilitation centre or cosmetic surgery centre. You know, the kind of place you would send a family member away for a ‘rest cure’, conveniently too far for anyone to visit :D

FelicityBeedle · 03/02/2023 23:15

I have a few family members I wouldn’t mind sending away for a while…
Although given it ends up in Switzerland and the doctors aforementioned attitudes to the disabled, perhaps an upper class Dignitas clinic would be the way forward

FelicityBeedle · 03/02/2023 23:34

According to ‘new house’ this is one of the favourite pictures of Jo and hangs on her wall. Not a typical favourite of a teen girl
