TV license

Sky1992 · 27/12/2022 00:57

So AIBU to stop my direct debit towards TV license since the kids only watch netflix, you tube or Disney and I only watch eastenders and most times I watch it at my parents?

Also is it worth cancelling it and only watching eastenders when I'm not at home or downloading it at my parents who do have TV license and watch it mine once its downloaded?

@user16539865
no you can’t stack them -I tried in in the summer as had one month left, current offer also includes Apple Music, fitness and a gaming channel I think

i have used the TV one, music one and the news one before, I just cheekily tried the news one again and it said sorry there is a problem

Why should anyone be jailed so that Gary Lineker can make millions? It's appalling.

I don't disagree with you Grin

Apple are on the ball - annoyingly 😉

Nobody is being jailed

People ARE being jailed. And many more are being fined £1000. For watching television. People who assault someone often aren't fined that much. It's absolutely crazy and I don't know how they've got away with it for so long.

Nobody is jailed for not having a TV licence as it is a non-imprisonable offence.
nobody is fined £1000 either; that is the maximum. It’s a band A fine which is half of your weekly income less a third for a guilty plea

That ,s from 1994 😂

Royalbloo · 27/12/2022 14:50

You need a licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. Doesn't matter what channel

Florenz · 27/12/2022 14:58

If the BBC is so great, let them stand on their own two feet instead of relying on bullying tactics to force people to pay for them. I don't see Amazon or Netflix sending people round knocking on doors threatening to fine them for not paying for their services.

Housofgirls · 27/12/2022 15:32

You can watch all of that on YouTube or Netflix. I don't have a TV license as don't watch live TV, I caught up with the queen's jubilee and funeral on YouTube

Whammyyammy · 27/12/2022 15:50

Pay for a TV licence 🤣🤣 it's not the 1950s!

Stopped paying it years ago, bin all letters they send, they can't detect what your watching, they can legally enter your home.

Just stop paying it and cancel your direct debit.

Whammyyammy · 27/12/2022 15:56

*can't legally enter

Getoff · 27/12/2022 16:13

PocketBattleship · 27/12/2022 02:09

But you have to pay for it even if you never watch it. It’s a draconian rip off.

No, you don't. If you have no TV you don't have to pay it.

You do have pay for it if you watch any live TV program, even if you never watch BBC. For example, if you only ever watch live sport on Sky Sports, you still need a TV licence.

Whether or not you have a TV has nothing to do with it, as live TV can be watched on all sorts of devices. If you only watch live sport on Sky Sports, on a phone tablet or laptop, and don't have a TV in your house, you still need a TV licence.

Abraxan · 27/12/2022 16:16

Adelant · 27/12/2022 01:19

Meh, I haven’t had a TV License in 8 years and I watch TV channels every night.

Officially, yes, you need a TV license even if :

  • you watch BBC iPlayer only
  • you download programmes at your parents but watch them at yours

But unofficially? I will never buy a TV license again and will still keep watching TV.

And any live/real time programme, regardless of what channel.

Lostinalibrary · 27/12/2022 16:27

Yabu for calling it a license it’s licence as it’s a noun.

You could watch the funeral live without a licence

RampantIvy · 27/12/2022 16:37

The BBC should use the same method for paying to watch live TV as they do then.

Royalbloo · 27/12/2022 16:37

Enforcement is the responsibility of the BBC under a Royal Charter

Tiltedandwilted · 27/12/2022 16:48

YANBU, but I am biased as I haven’t paid my TV licence for 10 years and still watch TV as normal.

LakieLady · 27/12/2022 16:49

Wonnle · 27/12/2022 14:14

You are aware that all radio is free and no licence is needed ?

Yes, I am, but the licence fee pays for it, and I'm happy to contribute to it.

orbitalcrisis · 27/12/2022 16:53

@Ansumpasty I'll give them a ring then, thanks.

themonkeysnuts · 27/12/2022 17:07

the BBC is nothing but crap and repeats
