So AIBU to stop my direct debit towards TV license since the kids only watch netflix, you tube or Disney and I only watch eastenders and most times I watch it at my parents?

Also is it worth cancelling it and only watching eastenders when I'm not at home or downloading it at my parents who do have TV license and watch it mine once its downloaded?

No, you need it for any live TV or iplayer.

According to the website, streaming is included.

it says ‘watch live’ on any streaming service. The Apps all have a ‘Live’ broadcast as well as the catch up.

It says live streaming not just streaming .

hence why I said "you need it for live TV", that includes livestreaming.

I can't believe no one laughed at my "ringarde" joke and now I've realised it doesn't have an "e" on the end...

Florenz · 27/12/2022 14:03

I can't see any justification for having the TV licence in this day and age. It's the most regressive tax there is. It's disgusting that people are being jailed so that Gary Lineker can earn 1.75 million a year for talking about football.

It really is
I was very glad not to be funding the lockdown propaganda.

ironically, the fact that I physically shuddered when mum had it on at her place has led to her not watching the "news" so much.

TwoMonthsOff · 27/12/2022 14:05

@Florenz
aaah poor Gary - he agreed to a pay cut a while back, how will he cope ?

‘Match of the Day host Gary Lineker remains the BBC's top earner, despite having agreed to a pay cut of just under £400,000. The BBC's annual report revealed Lineker earned £1.36m in the 2020/21 financial year, down from £1.75m in 2019/20.’

EmmaAgain22 · 27/12/2022 14:06

PS I don't view it as a tax because it isn't, but they have successfully scared many people into thinking they have to pay to watch anything on a screen.

TwoMonthsOff · 27/12/2022 14:07

@EmmaAgain22
sorry Emma - even with an ‘e’ it went straight over my head 🤔

TwoMonthsOff · 27/12/2022 14:10

I’m currently enjoying some ‘Freevee’ content, (minimal ads) and I posted on Telly Addicts yesterday that Barclaycard are starting another five months of Apple+ TV free.

it's a joke from Emily in Paris...third season on Netflix now...I'm only on episode 2.

see, with all the MNing, I don't have time to watch live TV anyway 😂

Cheapskates. It's like saying I don't want to pay tax that goes towards your kids' schools.

Nothing cheapskate about bot paying for something that you don't use. I haven't had a licence for the last two years based mainly on usage but also I won't support the politically biased BBC.

Nobody is being jailed for not having a Tv licence ,persistent failure to pay the fine might lead to a jail.sentence but I think that would be a last resort ,can you imagine the public outrage if a single mother was jailed for not paying the fine ,considering the whole operation. yewtree and the cover up.by the Bbc?

Is it a rip-off? it gives you legal advert-free access to everything it offers.

I don't think it's a rip-off at all, I think R4 alone is worth the licence fee, R3 is bloody fantastic and the documentaries and new drama they produce for tv are awesome.

You are aware that all radio is free and no licence is needed ?

RampantIvy · 27/12/2022 14:14

Well, this has changed into an I hate the BBC thread, hasn't it.

I like a lot of the BBC output and am not prepared to cut my nose off to spite my face, and will continue to pay my licence fee to watch the shows I enjoy.

Someone mentioned Sky Arts upthread. We can get it on our Freesat box without having to subscribe to another provider.

I don't think you can stack the Barclaycard Apple TV and I already have one going and then Sky is giving 6 months free which can be stacked so I may have to save the Barclaycard card code for later next year, can you have two lots as I am using one Barclaycard one now

TwoMonthsOff · 27/12/2022 14:17

@user16539865
no you can’t stack them -I tried in in the summer as had one month left, current offer also includes Apple Music, fitness and a gaming channel I think

Yes, it's on Freeview as well but I'd need to start a licence again for that.

Good timing, this thread, as I was dithering about Happy Valley but the licence fee really isn't worth it for me. I spent so much time at mum's anyway.

If they had a model where you could dip in and out, it would be different. I cancelled Netflix immediately when mum had a stroke as I knew 'd have no time to watch. In summer 2021 I had a period of ludicrous hours for about two months, so again just cancelled it. Very handy.

Florenz · 27/12/2022 14:19

Why should anyone be jailed so that Gary Lineker can make millions? It's appalling.

It's a rip.off if you don't watch it though ,you wouldn't pay a subscription fee,for Netflix or Amazon prime if you didn't watch it ,people are different and like different types of entertainment.

TwoMonthsOff · 27/12/2022 14:21

@EmmaAgain22
it will be on BritBox soon anyway probably, I had a free trial to watch the documentary about the parachute killer, that’s a dip in/out service and has all the BBC and ITV content on.
I watched Happy Valley season 1 and 2 on Amazon I think? It is brilliant I have to say

does anyone remember the lecture by Kevin Spacey (groan) where he said streaming TV and binge watching was the future? I had no idea how right that was.

mamabear715 · 27/12/2022 14:23

Not RTFT but am happy to pay the fee for 24/7 entertainment.
Not a big fan of netflix etc, too much faff, just want to switch the telly on!
