To be sad that Christmas is over for me?

As am back to work on the 28th. So many people have until the 3rd off.
Just feel sad that I don't have the nice, lazy, downtime so many others are getting and I will be asked how Christmas was when so many are still celebrating. I know I will be lynched for saying all this but just feel down about it and know work will be super depressing now it's all over.

There’s still tomorrow!

dudsville · 26/12/2022 22:18

Is your annual leave restricted? If you don't have a choice then you definitely have my sympathy. I purposely book off between Christmas and NY as it's so depressing.

Purplepuddle · 26/12/2022 22:19

I feel ya and I'm back at work tomorrow

GrohlOnAPole · 26/12/2022 22:19

I think a lot of people feel down after Christmas, no matter how long they do or don’t have off.

people will say “consider yourself lucky you had Christmas off” etc etc but it doesn’t need to be competitive, you feel how you feel.

DH is back to work on Wednesday and I’m gutted as not only do we not get a few days off as a family but I’ll have hyper children by myself!

You can still have evenings like that though. I’ve worked every single day apart from Xmas day, and will be right through until the 4th. I’m still enjoying the cosy evenings, the lights and candles, the chocolates and nice food etc.

Both DH and DS are forced to take their annual leave between Christmas and New Year as their respective offices close down. Neither of them particularly want that time off at Christmas. At least you get to choose when you take your leave.

Pelo22 · 26/12/2022 22:26

I'm back to work too
Leave is restricted as we can't all book the time off. Suspect it will be manic and because people are off we will be short staffed

Yutes · 26/12/2022 22:29

Im back to work too
but I try and keep the magic for longer -
take part of a cheese board to work for lunch.
pour a Sherry when I come from work
eat nice picky bits
board games and nice films. Visiting.
it sucks but it is what it is

SemperIdem · 26/12/2022 22:29

Most people who have until Jan 3rd off are using annual leave to do so, whether optionally or because it is in their contracts. I’d hate to have choice over my leave taken away from me in this way.

Libre2 · 26/12/2022 22:31

I hear you - my fault entirely though as I didn’t save enough leave

DoobyDooToo · 26/12/2022 22:33

I had to work today and Christmas Eve too. I only had Christmas Day off and to be honest it ruined my Christmas because I was so exhausted. It would be so lovely to have a few days off for Christmas and just relax so I feel your frustration 🥺

Bicurator · 26/12/2022 22:36

I work in a school and have the holidays off, what do you do for work?

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 26/12/2022 22:38

OP your waistline will feel the benefit of you going back to work. Mine on the other hand is working out how my jeans will cope when I have eaten a full tin of Roses while watching TV and that's on top of all the other stuff I am enjoying !

There's loads that are back or will be working
NHS, carers, retail, garages, car dealerships, hospitality, call centres...

HassallGreen · 26/12/2022 22:41

Back at work today here, we're not allowed to use annual leave to take the whole Christmas period off.

tillyandmilly · 26/12/2022 22:42

Could you not take annual leave? I am back the 3rd Jan and finished on the 21 December but I have used my annual leave for it.

Yutes · 26/12/2022 22:45

You often can’t take the annual leave the whole way through this might be
due to annual leave distribution for the year
the job or role they have
too short notice now to take annual leave
sickness or short staff cover

sometimes it’s just not feasible or realistic. But it’s still ok to be sad about being back to work in the twixtmas.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 26/12/2022 22:46

I worked today! It’s okay. I’ve learned to just accept it for what it is.

I didn’t say there wouldn’t be?? I merely asked the OP what she does.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 26/12/2022 22:48

I’m back work tomorrow. I had yesterday and today off and enjoyed it.

I don’t get annual leave, but I also don’t get paid if I don’t go to work, and someone has to pay for Christmas.

you aren’t unreasonable OP but it’s very normal for days off to be few and far between and to be perpetually exhausted. At least that’s what I tell myself!

NeedAHoliday2021 · 26/12/2022 22:49

I spent last week upset I was in work when all my friends seemed to be on Fb posting pictures of baking with dc. On Christmas Eve I actually cried (to dh) that “I’ve not even baked with the dc!” - I’m honestly not usually this nuts and I’m putting it down to hormones and general Christmas stress combined with a mad week at work (nhs so dealing with strikes impact etc). Dh was rather baffled and wasn’t really sure what to say as, like I said, this really is out of character for me. Even as I said it, part of my brain was saying “wtf?!”. I’m glad I waited for this week to be off but probably won’t get it next year. Back to work blues is fairly normal I think.

user1471556818 · 26/12/2022 22:50

Enjoy the time off you have had. plan some nice things for when you get home from work
Be grateful you don't work in health, social care when you put a smile on your face and just get on with working and postpone your celebration till you are off

I hate FB during major holidays for this exact reason 😊 I dislike baking with DC anyway 🤭
