What did you get for your teen this Christmas?

Im asking this as I tend to overthink whether I'm getting it "right" as a mum (for personal reasons linked to my own childhood). Anyway.... just wondering if this seems about right for a 16 yo teen girl for Christmas?

I didn't see my teen DD yesterday as she was at her dad's for Christmas Day. She's coming home today. I've just wrapped all her stuff ready for her coming back, but I feel a bit bad as I haven't spent as much on her presents this year as I normally do. I've actually ended up getting into debt for some of her stuff. I've got her:

  • Apple AirPods (she asked for)
  • trainers (she asked for)
  • Gym Shark leggings
  • 5 new tops / jumpers (2 she asked for; 3 I chose for her)
  • a personalised engraved prosecco glass
  • a bottle of Prosecco
  • a candle
  • smellies (bath products etc)
  • a fluffy onesie

When I bought these things I felt like it was a lot but it doesn't look like much wrapped. But the first 3 items alone on the list came to £200!! I just can't afford to get her as much anymore now she's older. Is this just how it is now she's older and the stuff she wants is more costly?

DD17 got a do it at home gel nail kit, an Afghan coat from Urban outfitters, a dress from Motel Rocks, dancewear, slippers and bed socks, monogrammed pjs, travel jewellery case and a Heavenly London bracelet.

QuietYou · 26/12/2022 14:35

I'm impressed you managed to get air pods, trainers and gym shark leggings for £200, that's some serious bargain hunting!

Violashift · 26/12/2022 14:54

List looks fine op. My dd is the same with her Dad and me being split. So gets twice as much really.

No judgment on the alcohol. However I think chocolates are a weird present as they are all around anyway and something we share as a family. Guess I would see alcohol as the same. Glass is fine.

teenpresents · 26/12/2022 16:16

I am afraid if feels a bit sad and ‘needy’ too as if OP is trying to get the girl to sit at home drinking with lonely mum.

😂😂😂

Air pods £120
Trainers £50
Leggings £30

Leggings were second hand on Vinted but marked as 'new with tags' and were most definitely brand new with tags when they arrived

Buying alcohol for a 16 yo is definitely not normal. 😂

Survey99 · 26/12/2022 16:29

Glad she loved her presents as it was mostly a great bundle, but sorry I am another that think normalising a full bottle of alcohol as a gift for a 16 year old is trying way too hard to be a cool mum and doing your child no favours. A single small glass with a special Christmas dinner fair enough, but a full bottle to a child shows very poor judgement.

I thought you didn’t want to talk about the alcohol for a sixteen year old?

We are sharing the bottle. And she only has one glass at a time. So we will share that bottle over the next week or so. It's really not an issue. You'd think I'd got her a gram of cocaine ffs.

I won't be responding anymore as I'm enjoying me evening with my DD - cheers 🥂 to all and a merry Christmas 🎅🏻 😘😘

The gifts are very nice, with the exception of the Prosecco and glass (shoot me, but I agree with PPs that these are very odd things to give a 16-year-old, though you've made it clear you disagree). I would imagine most teens would be thrilled to receive such a selection.

However, I think it is frankly insane to go into debt to pay for Christmas presents. Since your DD has also received an equivalent number of gifts from her dad and other relatives, why go overboard to such an extent?

Survey99 · 26/12/2022 17:09

Yum yum, flat processco! 🤔

Of course you are sharing it over a week or so 🙄

Looking through my dds snap chat yesterday one of her maté's parents bought him a weed box. ConfusedConfused

Well done 😊 One of my DC got AirPods this year but they were £179, they were the cheapest I could find new, although I was really last minute this year so probably missed all the bargains!

Wow. People really do use MN as a place to say all the stuff they'd never say to anyone in real life don't they. How incredibly sad for those people.

In Prosecco?

I worked in a hotel in late 90s. They had stoppers for champagne. No reason they can’t be used for Prosecco. They aren’t a new thing.

I would definitely say it in real life, don’t know why it’s been deleted 🙄
