To think I’ve been spiked?

Was out with 2 friends last night. Only had 1 drink and never left my drink alone either. Felt really wobbly after and had a banging headache and couldn’t see properly it was like the room was spinning and fainted and still feel terrible this morning. 1 drink is not a lot for me and I definitely never left that drink alone so don’t know how I’ve been spiked

I'm sure my drink was spiked once - I lost the use of my limbs, kept falling, everything was spinning, it was horrendous. I'd only had two drinks!

Luckily a friend called my husband so I was safe. The next morning I felt awful, like I was recovering from a general anaesthetic.

I have no idea how, like you, I never left my drinks alone for a second. Total mystery.

This is exactly how I felt/feel. A friend has suggested it might have been a needle but I would have felt it.

Barman did it.

Must have been, it’s the only way

Maybe it’s this flu bug?

Flyovertherainbow · 26/12/2022 07:40

But even then that’s odd still as I saw the drink being made

This happened to myself and a friend many years ago. We had 3 drinks over 4 hours and left sober. By the time we got to our friends house we were a total state. My friend ended up asleep on the bathroom floor using a tool box as a pillow and I stripped off naked and got into bed with my friend, when she woke me I apparently crawled around weeing everywhere sluring that I was on the toilet. My friend told us the next day that neither of us could walk.

We had a lucky escape but it's a memory that will stay with me forever. We did leave our drinks unattended to go to the toilet, but I will never do that again! Just goes to show that it doesn't always make a difference if you leave it unattended or not. What sick people there are out there. Sorry this happened to you.

Timing could be a coincidence in this case as it does sound unlikely you've been spiked. Some bugs come on very quickly and can present like this

This. It’s not impossible it could be the barman, but I don’t think you can necessarily draw that as a definite conclusion. It might, for example, have been a brief episode of BPPV or other illness.

Hope you recover soon either way.

I've no idea of the amount that is needed to 'spike' a drink - it might be enough just to smear round the inside of a glass, so barman could have 'pre-prepared' glass.

Quveas · 26/12/2022 08:09

If you have been spiked it won't be easy to prove anything now. But I would suggest that you report it and the location you were at to the police. They do keep records of such things, and if several reports come in around the same location, then they do look into things further. Yours could be the one that triggers an investigation. Or you may be wrong in which case there is no harm done either way.

Madeyoulook · 26/12/2022 08:11

Is it possible you’re ill? There are lots of horrible viruses around at the moment that come on suddenly.

LivingOnAPrayerYes · 26/12/2022 08:23

Are you taking any medication? Antibiotics and sinutabs have really messed me up just with one drink in the past.

BattleofBeamfleot · 26/12/2022 08:34

That is exactly how I felt with Covid within 2 hours of first noticing that I wasn't quite right. Went from "fine albeit with slightly scratchy throat that could be something or nothing" to "extremely woozy, headache, can't see straight, passed out on the train home from work".

Have you got a test you can take?

CarnivalSong · 26/12/2022 08:38

I’ve had this twice over the years and I actually think it was fake alcohol for me.

As in the bar served me fake alcohol, not home
made!

SaveMeCheezus · 26/12/2022 08:40

Wallywobbles · 26/12/2022 07:30

Barman did it.

For what purpose exactly?

IME people working behind bars on Christmas Day are doing it because they need the money, not because they get a kick out of witnessing someone get sick?

There's a real culture on MN of low-paid staff in hospitality and retail being eyed with immediate suspicion and it's bullshit.

Similar has happened to me before OP, half-way through one drink. The drink was punch served from a tureen same as everyone else's and I could not have been spiked between my being handed it and my collapsing. Sometimes alcohol just hits us differently, or our body reacts to it differently.

Whatwouldscullydo · 26/12/2022 08:41

Could it have been a friend.?

I suspect I was drugged once. I had 2 drinks in the course of .entire evening and I barely remember anything from that night I barely remember getting home. And I certainly don't recall getting to bed. I've been really drunk many a time and had more recollection. The friend I was with at her house also felt really weird the morning after we were both really groggy with little memory of the night befire.

The only person it could have been was the friend who wasn't drinking.

Unless you're using something akin to a nerve agent (think Salisbury poisonings), this is impossible.

The most common and easiest way of a drink being spiked is simply to add more alcohol to it. Usually a clear spirit like vodka. This is why so many tests for people who think they've been spiked don't actually detect any illegal substances.

Another Occam's razor explanation is what another poster has linked above - dodgy alcohol.

It's possible you have been spiked (although impossible for it to have been done with a needle - over a year after that social media urban legend panic first started there are still no proven cases and medically it's not possible) but it's also possible you are unwell with a winter flu bug which has come on. Take care of yourself this morning, drink plenty, and see how you get on.

I used to be bar staff. I.was asked a few times to put extra shots in things. If I knew the drinks weren't the person asking id of course refuse. But I obviously would have had no idea what really happens to the 3 pints of carling , 2 bacardi and cokes and 5 shots of flavoured vodkas once they were carried away..

Maybe bars should refuse to serve rounds. One person. One drink. Maybe that would be the safest better I've done that before and surprisingly people get quite pissed off at not being able to buy extra shots 🤔

ScarlettSunset · 26/12/2022 09:07

I had a similar thing happen many years ago, before there were any warnings about drink spiking etc.
I'd gone to the pub with my flatmate and we only had one drink each and I didn't even finish mine. My flatmate was so concerned they took me to the hospital but the doctors decided I'd had a bit too much to drink. I really had barely any. Never did find out for sure what had happened but when I hear about drink spiking now, it always sounds like what happened then.

Delilah73 · 26/12/2022 09:09

My daughter was needle spiked. She only knew because the needle mark was on her shoulder and quite sore. Fortunately because of the position it didn’t work. She reported and also attended A and E for blood tests. Maybe check if you have any marks on you?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/12/2022 09:11

@Lockheart

'Unless you're using something akin to a nerve agent (think Salisbury poisonings), this is impossible.'

I think I must watch too many James Bond films!
