Yes, yes, we should all be grateful for people making the effort to buy us things etc etc (just to pre-empt the usual thread kill joys.) However. I am 48. I dress kind of ageing rock chick, chunky biker boots, leather jacket, wafty dress sort of thing. Just what I do. My sister is more Next and Boden which is fine, doesn't bother me what she wears. She has bought me this: fluffy rabbit jumper Is it a passive aggressive comment on my dress sense? Has she forgotten Im 48? My partner thinks its hilarious! (Disclaimer: I have not had too much prosecco and I am not sat here wearing it!😂)

I have received bowl champagne glasses from my extended family.
I also received bowl champagne glasses from them in 2020 and 2021.
I now have 22 mismatched bowl champagne glasses to store...

I rarely drink champagne and have absolutely no idea why they keep giving them to me.

Maybe they have a image of you fine dining....love it. X

Some of these are dreadful. I got my third dressing gown in a year from my mum but she did get me other things too. It's just odd she thinks I am so hard wearing of my dressing gowns that they need replacing !

TroysMammy · 26/12/2022 08:52

Yesterday my DM gave me a pair of childrens pink glittery jelly sandals in size 9. I nagged for them as a little girl but as she would only buy me Clarks shoes I never got any. The guilt has obviously hit her 45 years later. She said to give them to the charity shop but despite them not fitting I quite like them.

Consufed · 26/12/2022 08:56

For my birthday she regifted me the candle I’d given her last Christmas.

That's her present for next Christmas sorted them Grin

thelengthspeoplegoto · 26/12/2022 08:57

@JimBell this is really sad. Has anything been said?

SinnerBoy · 26/12/2022 08:59

When I was 21, I spent quite a bit of money buying interesting packets of pipe tobacco for my dad. He said, "Oh great. You've forgotten that I've been stopped for over a year..."

Um, yeah....

This year from my parents I received a bath bomb and a candle from b&m. DH received a box of golf balls with the £12 price tag still on. Usually they are really generous to us, we made loads of effort for them and put together a lovely food & wine hamper with all their favourites. My brother and his gf got £500 cash in their card. Not sure what we’ve done to offend them this year but it was almost embarrassing opening that whilst my brother opened his

Bloody hell I bet that was awkward

PleaseTakeItOff · 26/12/2022 09:35

Also my weight obsessed dm bought me a new swimming costume in size 10 and quickly said “I’m sorry I bought it a few months ago when you were still slim but I’ve kept the receipt so you can change it for a size 12 or 14. I’m a size 10 and have been for at least the last decade. I certainly haven’t had any weight change in the last few months but she just can’t resist. She does the same to my dsis every year too as she’s a size 16/18. She’ll say “I know you say you’re size 16/18 but I got you a 14 because it’s absolutely enormous. Then will look shocked and hurt when dsis gets pissed off because a size 14 is too small.

A very expensive gift voucher for a well known steak house. I’ve been vegetarian for 30 years.

So your present was a replacement for something your DH had broken?? I’d be furious. What did you get him?

I got him a variety of little things rather than one big thing, which is what we normally do. He got me lots of little things too, so it wasn't instead of something else.

And it's a much better one than we'd normally get (KitchenAid). Our previous one was unbranded, and realistically doing 25 years was pretty good.

He broke it cooking a Thanksgiving meal he'd organised for 70 for local refugees, who are currently in a "hotel" where the food is not really adequate. So I'd forgive him anyway.

SIL got me a ram foot stool , we have a small house and not much room for extra furniture, and it’s awful. I googled the company it’s from and they retail for roughly £55 !!!

Id actually have loved that! 😂

Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 26/12/2022 10:44

A toilet seat!

BaublesandBangles · 26/12/2022 10:48

Whats wrong with that jumper? It's to wear in the house to keep warm. I assume you don't wear your edgy 'rock chick' clothes for lounging about the house.

Lummikukka · 26/12/2022 10:53

My brother, in my 20s, gave me a book 'How to meet a man'. Pretty upsetting, as due to his constant bullying in my childhood and teens I was left with very low self-esteem, and yes, found it impossible to meet a (nice) man.

If it's the ones Im thinking of, they are cute, so you could probably sell it?

pompomsandtinsel · 26/12/2022 11:44

A fire extinguisher

Preraph · 26/12/2022 11:45

@Tiredo...that's not just an error of judgement or bad taste, that's a downright insult.

FeltCarrot · 26/12/2022 11:57

@MargaretThursday I’ll let him off then, I love my kitchen aid! 😀

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 26/12/2022 12:12

I love that jumper! Maybe we should revive the MN traditional post Christmas present swop thread?

This is a few years ago, but my grandmother used to be "horrified" that DH was the stay at home parent whilst I worked. How she judged us (she didn't like DH anyway). One memorable Christmas she pointedly gave DH an office set Grin She was wealthy so it was actually gorgeous, stirling silver and weighed a ton! Naturally I took it to my office (this was the days of needing letter openers and hole punchers) where it was loved for many years. I actually got a lot of business from it when potential clients clocked my business card holder, so her passive aggressiveness didn't quite have the effect she intended. Grin

Wow how nasty is your dm I’m sorry.

My db got me a book on sex positions I think he thinks it’s funny . Tbh it’s not the first time I’ve had similar book from him so next year I’m considering wrapping up the same book and giving it him back or just getting him something similar .

MIL got me a cross stitch set of Big Ben. I have never shown any interest in cross stiching. Ever. In fact she got me one last year too of another London sight. It will make its way to the charity shop as soon as she leaves

My daughter loves cross stitch! Actually asked why I didn’t get her any kits lol

HowForNow · 26/12/2022 15:12

DH got me a fancy bobble hat. Nice. Til I realised the pompom is actual fox fur. I'm vegetarian, if I don't eat animals I'm sure as heck not going to be wanting to wear them! He was mortified bless him.

Actupfishy · 26/12/2022 19:47

A briefcase from my mum at Christmas after I had started uni .

Susurrar · 27/12/2022 00:37

We received a picture frame with 5 stick figures in it made of shoe laces. 2 bigger ones representing the parents and 3 smaller ones, representing the 3 children. Underneath it says “Tied with love”.

We have one child. Nobody amongst my/OH’s siblings has 3 children. It’s truly inexplicable.
